Good Luck to Year 6 2014
Good luck to all the students from the class of 2014 as you begin the HSC this year. 2020 has thrown up many challenges, but I am sure that you are well placed to face those challenges and succeed. Remember to stay positive and there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck for the future!
Year 5 Camp
The students have had a wonderful first day at camp. The bushwalk was a true bushwalk and took in many of the magnificent views of the island. The children learnt many facts about the history of the island. The damper at the end of the walk was delicious. The other groups did some archery and raft building. Both activities from all accounts were a lot of fun. Everyone is having a wonderful time. Thanks to Mrs Ford for her incredible organisation skills.
2021 Planning
Planning for next year is well underway. To assist in our planning if you are aware that your child will not be attending Pennant Hills Public School next year, please send the school an email letting us know. Please include details of the new school your child will be attending. If you know of any families that live in our local area with Kindergarten age children that are not enrolled as yet, please direct them to the school. Our Kinderlinks program will begin in a few weeks and it is important for the children to become familiar with the school. Lastly, if you would like to make any requests for 2021 please send me a letter or an email. All requests will be considered and need to be in by Friday 6 November. However, please note that this does not mean that your request will be granted. A huge amount of time goes into planning classes each and every year and there are many factors that go into ensuring that the students are best placed to learn.
Year 7 Selective High School applications 2022
Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods.
Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 11 March 2021.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2022, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available in late September 2020 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.
The application website opens at that link on 6 October 2020 and closes on 9 November 2020. You must apply before the closing date.
There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after 6 October 2020.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
Strategic Improvement Plan
As you would be aware the school is currently in the initial stages of planning our next school plan 2021-2024. To assist the school with its planning we are surveying the students, staff and parents. These surveys are through the Tell Them From Me surveys that the school has participated in previously. The parent survey, Partners in Learning, is now available for parents until the end of Week 2 in Term 4. You can access the survey at http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/qfp69 and it will take approximately 30-40 minutes. All your input is valuable for the school and we thank you for your contributions.
Thank You
Kind Regards

Stage 3 Camp
Have a great time this week Stage 3 – they are off to Milson Island for 3 nights of fantastic fun! We are so glad we could provide this opportunity for our stage 3 students considering the Covid pandemic, and weren’t the year 5’s excited this morning! No doubt Year 6 will feel the same on Wednesday morning. I didn’t even see any tears from parents this year – well done parents! A big thank you must go to the Stage 3 teachers, Mr Pinchbeck and Mrs Griffith for giving up their time away from their families to attend the camp with Penno students. An extra special mention to Mrs Ford who has not only done a stellar job at organising the camp but was thrown many last minute curve balls that she has caught and pocketed without a fuss. Thank you and have fun!
World Teachers’ Day
On Friday October 30, we are celebrating our teachers for World Teacher day!
If you would like to acknowledge the work one of our wonderful teachers has done, please email the school pennanthil-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au with subject Mrs Wasson - World Teacher Day and I will be sure to collate and pass on.
Smith Family Christmas Toy and Book Appeal
2020 has been a difficult year for everyone and this year, like the last, our school is supporting the Smith Family in their Christmas Toy and Book Appeal. The donations we received for the Smith Family last year were simply remarkable. We are aware that many families have been hit by hardship during the recent crisis and we ask that you consider donating new toys and books to this appeal to support over 32 000 children who are experiencing disadvantage in Australia. Your contribution will make a difference to the lives of these children. Some further information regarding the types of donations is below. We thank you in advance for considering to donate.
HOW IT WORKS
Each child will receive a gift pack containing what we call a main gift, a filler gift and a book.
And although we cater for children aged 0 – 12 years, it is the 6 to 12 year age group where we sometimes fall short.
So, when looking for the perfect donation to help bring smiles to the faces of children in need this Christmas, consider collecting the following gifts:

Book Week – Creatures real or imagined
This week Book Week is being celebrated throughout Australia. Since 1945 the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together through this annual event. Its aim is to highlight the importance of reading and to celebrate Australian children’s literature.
This year the CBCA Book Week theme is ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’. This event is normally held in August, however, due to COVID-19 was re-scheduled to this week.
The following books won this year’s CBCA Book of the Year Awards:
The CBCA Book of the Year Awards 2020 presentation can be viewed on this link.
Calling all curious creatures!
Due to the Stage 3 students being at camp this week our school will be holding a “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds” theme day next Wednesday 28 October.
Students are being asked to let their imaginations run “wild” and come dressed as any type of “curious” creature – imaginary, real or even in-between! For example, they may come dressed as book character that has sparked their imagination or an unusual animal or insect they have read about. They might even create their own “curious” creature. The possibilities are endless!
In previous years we have held “The Great Book Swap” in Book Week to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). This organisation works to put books into the hands of children and families in remote Indigenous communities across Australia. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 this event could not be held this year so instead we would appreciate a gold coin donation on the day.
We look forward to a wild and curious day!
Scholastic Book Club
Issue 7 catalogues will be distributed to the students this week. To order from the Book Club catalogue you will need to go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website page, register your details if you haven’t already done so and pay by credit card.
The catalogue can be viewed online at https://www.scholastic.com.au/book-club/book-club-parents/.
How do I order?
- Go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website to register your details. You will need to enter your name, email address and a password. Click on “Add new child” and using the drop down menu locate our school and your child’s class. If you have children on both sites you may decide to register and place your entire order just with one child to save time.
- Enter your child’s first name and their surname initial. Please note that Scholastic does not share student details with third parties or use this information for marketing purposes. This information is for distribution when the order arrives at the school.
- Click on “ORDER” and enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue. Follow the prompts to finalise payment using a credit card.
- All orders are processed after the closing date and delivered to the school for distribution.
The closing date for online orders is Wednesday 28 October.
Thank You

Good luck to all our year 5 and 6 kids who are heading off to their long awaited and well deserved camp to Milson Island this week. Hope you all have the most fantastic time!!
Thank you to all families who have made their generous payments through Flexischools for the P&C Readathon. Donations will continue to be accepted for the remainder of October. However, if you would like your child to be eligible for a PRIZE, please make your payment by the end of this week.
PRIZES will be awarded to the children at each campus who have raised the most $$ for the school.
ALL PAYMENTS BY FLEXISCHOOLS ONLY. NO CASH WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Lachlan M, 6B asks: Dear Green Team, What can we do with our old IKEA coloured plastic plates? They have Recycle ‘5’ on them but I don’t think our domestic recycling takes ‘5’ and the Thornleigh Recycling Centre doesn't list it as an accepted item.
Good news – our recycling bins DO take plastics labelled with ‘5’, so you can put those plastic plates in the yellow bin. Most Council kerbside recycling bins (Hornsby Shire included) can take any solid plastics with the numbers 1, 2 or 5!
- 1 – PETE – (Polyethylene Terephthalate)- Think soft drink bottles and common food packaging. These should only be used once.
- 2 – HDPE – (High Density Polyethylene) - Usually found in packaging for things like detergents, shampoo and milk containers.
- 5 – PP – (Polypropylene) – Durable plastic that is considered safe to be reused like Lachlan’s IKEA plates, fishing net and some toys.
These plastics can be recycled into other plastic bottles, polyester fibres, bags, tubs, ropes and even clothing. Plastics labelled with 3, 4, 6, and 7 should not be placed in your yellow bin.
Do your kids have a Green team question? Email their question to phpsgreenteam@gmail.com and we’ll answer and print it in the newsletter during Term 4.

- Band Rehearsals – Due to Stage 3 camp, there will be a slight change in this week’s SCB rehearsals. Please check the roster if any parent has put their name for next week as a band parent.
- Year 6's - Monday Afternoon
- Year 5's - Thursday Morning
- Intro to Music: There will be a year 2 intro to music assembly on the 28th Dave will demo some of the instruments from 2:30pm to 2:45pm at the school hall.
- Upcoming Event: Save the Date! The complete lack of performance opportunities this year due to COVID-19 has been a bit of a downer for the bands this year. However, we have some good news on that front. Our wonderful Banddirector and SCB&JB conductor has managed to book a busking performance slot for us on Sunday, 6th December in Hornsby Mall!! We have a 2hr time slot from 12-2pm. More detailed information will follow soon but providing advanced notice now to save the date.
Many thanks,
Band Committee.
