A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Around The School
Over the last fortnight we were able to return to the more traditional type of school assembly in the hall, rather than our school leaders running the assembly via Zoom. Our leaders all spoke clearly and are doing a wonderful job at standing in front of hundreds of faces. Below are some photos of the first Kindergarten students to receive merit awards at an assembly and one of our house captains, Becky, playing the piano as students entered the hall. Well done everyone – it’s great to have some normality back!
At 10am this morning I did a quick walk around the K-2 site and there were so many wonderful things happening, I had to include them in the newsletter.
2B were involved in a measurement activity, trying to find items that were longer and shorter than 30 centimetres. 1E were concentrating really hard to write the letter ‘D’ with the correct formation and pencil grip. 1D were engaged in a phonics or sound lesson, identifying long and short vowels. What a wonderful learning environment we have!
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

Clean up Australia Day Sunday 7 March
Clean Up Australia Day is coming up this Sunday, 7 March, so it's time to get out there and clean up our neighbourhoods. Create your own event or join events to clean up Yarrara Road or Pennant Hills MarketPlace.
You can join here: https://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/fundraisers/monikaball/thornleigh-station-to-thornleigh-squash
Litter on our streets and roads end up in our local creeks, making their way through the catchment to rivers and the ocean, impacting water quality and wildlife. Cleaning up our streets is one way we can help.
Clean up Australia Day has been going for 30 years, and in that time volunteers have removed over 380,000 utes full of rubbish from our environment.
Join us next Sunday to add another ute-ful...there is still much to do!

Final Note
On a final note, I will be stepping down as P&C President at the AGM tonight, after almost four years. I really have thoroughly enjoyed this role, as I have had the pleasure of meeting so many fantastic families and staff. A very big thank you to Mr Pinchbeck, Mrs Wasson, Mrs Griffith and all the teachers and staff at PHPS for supporting me during this time. Your overwhelming support for the P&C and our children is amazing.
Thank you to all of you, for everything you do, whether you sit on a committee or just help when you can, every hand counts! Everything you do, will make a difference in your child’s schooling, so thank you for your help.
A huge thanks to the amazing P&C Executive and your families. Your commitment to the school, the P&C and the kids is amazing. Our likeminded and can do attitude to give our kids the best we can, is nothing short of amazing. You’re a fantastic group and it’s been a pleasure to work with you, thank you so much.
Lastly, special thanks to long time executive members VP Dayan McLeod, Treasurer Mick Wilkins, Secretary Russ Nicholson, Executive member Damon Murray, who also all step down this year. Thank you so much for your incredible support, hard work and commitment to the P&C!
Thanks also to my wife Nicole and our four kids for their patience and support through the many nights out with meetings and countless phone calls and emails. Couldn’t have done it without them!

Covid-19 Operating Protocols
The Uniform Shop has reopened for over the counter sales and service.
All parents are required to make an appointment before attending the Uniform Shop. This is to ensure that there is no overlapping of families or crowding and queuing at the shop.
All parents will be required to sign in and register at the 3-6 office before coming to the shop for their appointment. As a result of the sign in requirements, the Uniform Shop has had to adjust its operating hours and for the remainder of the term the shop will now open on Thursday mornings instead of Thursday afternoons.
To make an appointment at the Uniform Shop please use the following link:
https://calendly.com/phpsuniformshop/15minutes?month=2021-02

Future Events
We are working on getting the bands into a few events this year, as much as can be allowed with COVID restrictions.
At present we're investigating the Ryde Eisteddfod, and Sydney Eisteddfod. The Ryde event is later in the year and hopes to be done on location, the Sydney event is in June and will be done via video recordings. The video recordings are likely to be done on a weekend with the venue yet to be confimed. We will give as much notice as possible.
Music Camp
The school is working on arrangements for the Music Camp. This year it is scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday 30 May - Tuesday 1 June. Please keep these dates free. Yes, this year it will be predominantly during normal school time. Further details to come in due course.
Training Band
Everyone seems to be setting in well. Keep up the good work and make sure you are working through the worksheets with your tutors.
Intermediate Band
As at time of writing we still need a parent helper for this week's rehearsal.
Additionally we have still got 2 rehearsals in March which do not yet have a parent helper. Can we please get these filled in ASAP. The link is below in the Parent Helper section.
Senior Band
We have still got 5 rehearsals in March/April which do not yet have a parent helper. Can we please get these filled in ASAP. The link is below in the Parent Helper section.
Ideally we would like to have 2 parent helpers on Thursday mornings, especially now that Jazz band will be starting up. Can we please get some additional helpers into the doodle poll schedule.
Jazz Band
Tryouts for jazz band last week went well and invitations to join will be coming out shortly.
Piano Players - Jazz band auditions are open to piano players who are not currently in the band program. Playing standard needs to be around AMEB grade 5-6.
Water Towels
Every brass player must be bringing a water towel to rehearsal. There is to be absolutely no emptying of water valves onto the carpet in the music room. If a player does not have their water towel they will not be allowed to play.
Just like the "no hat, no play" at lunch, Band has a strict "no towel, no play" at rehearsals.
Rehearsals
There has been some confusion around some of the rehearsal timings. The school newsletter is the main source of information regarding regular rehearsal information.
If last minute changes need to be made they will be put into the band's WhatsApp group.
Senior Concert Band
Group 1: Brass, Bass guitar & Percussion - Monday afternoons, 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Group 2: Woodwind - Thursday mornings, 7:30am - 8:15am
Jazz Band
Thursday mornings - 8:15am - 9am
Intermediate Concert Band
Wednesday, 7:30am – 9:00am
Group 1: Brass, Bass guitar, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Sax & Percussion - Odd weeks
Group 2: Clarinets, Flutes, Alto Sax and Percussion - Even weeks
Training Band
Friday, 8:00am – 9:00am
Group 1: Woodwind & Percussion - Odd weeks
Group 2: Brass, bass guitars & Percussion - Even weeks
On fine and sunny days band members from both groups would attend the rehearsal which will be done on the grass outside the band room. On days where it's raining or the ground is too wet, only the group assigned to rehearse that day would attend.
Your conductors will be making the decision on wet weather via the band's WhatsApp group, if you have got a question about a rehearsal the WhatsApp group is the best place to ask it.
If you are not part of your band's WhatsApp group and would like to be, please let us know.
Worksheets
Please make sure you print off the new set of worksheets for your child to work on. They can be found on the Band web pages here. We are also working on a new way to submit these so keep an eye on your email inbox for these details when we have it finalised. In the meantime, if you have one ready to submit, please take photos of them and send through all completed worksheets (or AMEB results) to phpsband+worksheets@gmail.com
Parent Helpers
Doodle polls are open to fill in for Parent Helper slots. ICB and SCB still have a few places to fill for Term 1.
If we do not have a parent helper for a rehearsal it will not go ahead.
Just a reminder, if we do not have a parent helper for a rehearsal it will be cancelled.
A big thank you to this week's helpers: Katarina M, TBA, Ivy W and Evita.
Future Committee Members
We have a number of people in key positions who will be leaving the school at the end of the year. If you think your child is going to be in the band next year, or if your child is not in a band but you are keen to help out with the band program, we would love to hear from you!!
Pennant Hills Public School Band Committee
Website: http://www.phpspandc.org.au/band/
