NSW State Swimming Carnival
On Thursday Sam K will represent Sydney North PSSA at the NSW PSSA State Swimming Championships in the 11 years Boys 50m Backstroke. He will be competing against the very best swimmers from across the State. A fantastic achievement in making it to the State Championships and we wish him all the very best of luck on the day.
Beecroft Zone PSSA
Congratulations to Stella M in Year 5 who has made the combined Beecroft/Ryde PSSA Zone Girls’ Football team to compete for a place in the Sydney North PSSA side to compete at the State Championships. A huge achievement for a year 5 student. We wish Stella all the very best of luck at the next level of trials.
Rubik’s Cube Competition
On Saturday 27 March, PHPS students Spyridon J (5W) and Anthony T (5B) participated in their first Rubik’s cube competition - Sydney Re-Open Saturday 2021 at Turramurra High School (organised by Speedcubing Australia). They competed against 98 competitors, including the 2013 & 2015 world champion and numerous record holders, Feliks Zemdegs.
Spyridon participated in a 3x3x3 competition. He had made it through to the second round and came 42nd. During this competition he set a personal best time of 15.53s.
Anthony participated in 3x3x3, 3x3x3 One-Handed, and Skewb competitions. He missed out on making it to the second round in 3x3x3 by one spot and came 51st with his competition personal best of 22.59s. He came 37th in 3x3x3 One-Handed (his competition personal best of 1:22.72m) and 27th in Skewb with his competition personal best of 12.50s.
Well done boys! Later this year they will be competing in the Australian National Competition on the Gold Coast in September.
Tell Them From Me
The Tell Them From Me survey for students in Years 4-6 is now open. The survey is an opportunity for students to have their say on their schooling and experiences. Their responses are factored in to the Strategic Improvement Plan, along with parental and staff feedback. The survey will be completed in class time and I encourage all families to allow their child to participate as their responses are anonymous. Families of students in Years 4-6 would have received an information note last week. This note provides you with all the relevant information for the survey. If you do NOT wish your child to participate please send the slip back to school. Most, if not all, schools across NSW will participate in these surveys.
Principal’s Pizza Lunch
Congratulations to all the students attending tomorrow’s Principal’s Lunch. These students have demonstrated their amazing achievements to earn this award through their commitment to their learning.
School Cross Country
Next term our school will be holding its annual Cross Country on Thursday 29 April. Parents are invited to attend on the day. It is has been so long since we have been able to invite parents to an event to support their children and we are very excited for this to occur next term. Fingers crossed that all stays well in our Covid world.
We are in the midst of the planning for the day and will publish the program when it is finalised. We are looking at having a longer lunch to allow parents time with their children on the day. The Canteen is also going to provide catering on the day so please stay tuned for further information around this. This will be a K-6 event with all students encouraged to participate.
Happy Holidays
On behalf of the entire staff at Pennant Hills PS we would like to wish all students and their families a safe and enjoyable holiday. This term the students have achieved and produced some excellent work across all Key Learning Areas. Our ‘new’ Kindergarten students have grown and developed so much in such a short period of time. It has been amazing to see how much they have learnt.
All students return to school on Tuesday 20 April 2021 in their winter school uniform.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Around the School
4B
Stage 2 have been learning about heat this term, and how heat is a transfer of energy. In order for 4B to see the relationship between the sun and the transfer of heat from the sun, we created solar ovens using foil, glad wrap and shoe boxes. The purpose was to melt the chocolate and the marshmallows using the heat from the sun, reflecting off the foil and creating a heater inside the glad wrap. They loved seeing how fast the chocolate melted because of the sun's energy, and were so excited to eat them at the end!
1M
The below photo shows 1M deeply engaged in the SeeSaw app which they are learning to use to display and store their learning in English and Mathematics. A great example of using technology to support learning – well done 1M!
2W
Easter is upon us and the students in Stage One are gearing up for a small Easter hat parade tomorrow. Excellent fine motor skills are involved in creating their Easter hats and don’t 2W’s hats look superb!
Kindergarten
Our Kindergarten students have settled in so beautifully this term, it is a pleasure to have them! I did a quick walk around this morning and saw many examples of engagement in literacy with literacy groups occurring in two rooms and a modelled reading session also occurring. I also heard Mrs Donoghue exclaiming, “I am so proud of you!” to KD as I walked passed, the were concentrating incredibly hard during their literacy sessions. Well done Kindergarten!
Check in assessments – Year 4 and Year 6
Next term our students in Years 4 and 6 will be participating in Check-in Assessments in Week 2. These are short online assessments that will be conducted within their classrooms, in the areas of literacy and numeracy and help us as a school identify areas for improvement in our programs and our strengths.
Students in years 4 and 6 are asked to bring in headphones that are clearly labelled with their name and class during Week 1. Students in Year 6 are asked to ensure their BYO device is fully charged and ready each morning for these assessments to take place effectively. Students in Year 4 are able to bring in a computer mouse if they would find this beneficial to use with the school laptops.
Thank you for your assistance in this area.
Staff Profile
Our staff profile for this week is for Mrs Amelia Mortimer, our fabulous 1A teacher who we have welcomed to PHPS this year as a targeted graduate. She has definitely found her groove and is a great asset to PHPS.
Welcome Mrs Mortimer!

Last Thursday the top ten leaders of PHPS were lucky enough to go to the National Young Leader's Day with leaders from primary schools across NSW.
We listened to amazing stories. One was Lachie Smart who at just 15 years old started planning a trip around the world. Another was Anastasia Woolmer who was incredible. She got a student to list thirty numbers in pairs and without looking, she listed them in order making no mistakes. She did it back so easily.
David Campbell was a great speaker, we learnt a lot from him, he even sung for us.
Our last speaker from that day is one that all of us Pennant Hills Public School students loved and were excited to hear, Jimmy Rees or as we know him as Jimmy Giggle. We even got to meet him!
Overall our day was fantastic. There were so many schools and I know we all learnt a lot.

On Thursday, Stage 2 students went on an excursion to Kuring-gai Chase National Park, Bobbin Head as part of their "May the warmth be with you" science unit.
Students engaged in interactive experiments looking at how matter changes forms when heated or cooled.

Hi All
We’ve almost made it to the end of Term 1 and the long awaited Easter break. Last week the P&C exec met to draft the event calendar ahead of releasing it early in Term 2. As previously mentioned we won’t be able to run the PHPS Fete this year due to the ongoing COVID restrictions however we will be able to run smaller activities throughout the year. Our first planned event will be the PHPS Planting day on Sunday 16 May. Further details will be provided but we are planning to plant seedlings around the 3-6 site and finish up with a BBQ at lunch time.
This week I also wanted to highlight the other business that the P&C runs for the school community - The Uniform Shop. The Uniform Shop is managed by Alison Parker, who has been a key member of the school for many years, and is currently supported by Siobhan Hancock whilst Alison is on leave. The shop sources and procures all of the core uniform items and accessories for the school as well as special items such as the year 6 shirts and kindy tea towels. The Uniform Shop committee oversees the running of the Shop for the P&C, ensuring the uniform items are fit for purpose, high quality and priced appropriately. Alison and the Committee work closely with Mr Pinchbeck and the teachers on any proposed changes to the PHPS uniform.
I hope everyone has a great Easter and school holidays!

Music Camp Corner
The registration for the annual PHPS music camp is opening this Thursday 1 April! An email from your ensemble convenor will be sent to music program families with the link. Creative Kids Vouchers are being accepted again this year. Registrations will close Friday 23 April. This year camp is being held during school time, so there are a few changes to our program. Due to covid restrictions there will be a recorded video performance provided to families instead of the end of camp concert this year. More details are provided in the registration link.
Food waste
Addressing food waste is one of the most important solutions to the climate crisis. If food waste was a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases behind China and the U.S (Source; FAO 2015).
Do you know how much food your family wastes? Why don't you try collecting your food waste for 3 days to find out? Most Australian households throw out $3800 worth of food each year.
There are some simple things we can all do to reduce how much food gets sent to landfill:
- look in the fridge and pantry before you go grocery shopping
- make a meal plan and a shopping list
- have a leftovers night for dinner or use leftovers for school lunches
- use tired looking vegies in stir fries, soups, casseroles.
You can find out more here https://www.fightfoodwastecrc.com.au/itseasyas/
And if all else fails investing in a worm farm or compost for your backyard is the next best thing you can do to keep food waste out of landfill. You can get them from Hornsby Council https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/property/waste/organic-waste/Compost-and-Worm-Farming

Award Worksheets
We are in the last week of Term 1.
Students in Training Band and Intermediate Band should have completed their Term 1 worksheet by now. Please submit them as soon as possible through the new Worksheet Submission Web Form. https://forms.gle/NpPEG9jk2FsYdmmq7
To do this:
- Enter your email address
- Select your child's name from the drop down menu
- Select the band your child is in along with the worksheet you are submitting
To Upload:
- You can use your phone camera to take a photo of the worksheet to submit
- If you are using a PC you can attach a scan of the completed form
This automatically populates a spreadsheet which we will use to decipher who needs their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
If you have issues with the web form you can still send worksheets through to phpsband+worksheets@gmail.com
If you do not have a copy of these worksheets they can be found on the Band web pages here. http://www.phpspandc.org.au/band/forms/
