Year 5 2022 – Opportunity Class
Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Successful students will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6.
Testing and Assessment
Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. Students who wish to be considered for opportunity class placement will sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Wednesday 21 July 2021.
How to Apply
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2021, you need to apply between Tuesday 20 April 2021 and Friday 7 May 2021. You will need to access the online application at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 . You must not use your child’s email address.
If you do not have internet access, you can apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after Tuesday 20 April 2021 at ssu@det.nsw.edu.au or on 1300 880 367.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
Important – the school cannot apply on your behalf.
Staffing Update
We warmly welcome Miss Georgia Jones to our wonderful school. Miss Jones will be teaching 4M for the remainder of the year. As most of you would be aware Miss Martin secured a permanent position at another school with the NSW Department of Education. Miss Jones is very excited to be working at our school as she has heard many great things.
Mrs Carolyn Freeland also joins our school as a School Learning Support Officer. Mrs Freeland is highly trained in the role and will provide our students an extra layer of support that they require. Mrs Freeland has worked locally for many years and is also excited to joining our community.
We welcome both of these ladies to our school and I am sure they will add value to our community.
NSW State Swimming Carnival
At the end of last term Sam K participated in the NSW PSSA State Swimming carnival. Sam did an outstanding job to reach the State carnival where he came 7th in the State for the 11 year boys 50m Backstroke. What an amazing achievement. Well done Sam!
Student Achievement
Congratulations to Georgie D and Naomi M (Year 6) who have made the Sydney North Girls Hockey PSSA team to compete at the upcoming NSW PSSA State carnival to be held in May. We congratulate both the girls on their achievement and wish them the best of luck for this competition.
School Cross Country
The school will be holding its annual Cross Country on Thursday 29 April. Parents are invited to attend on the day. It has been so long since we have been able to invite parents to an event to support their children and we are very excited for this to occur this term. Fingers crossed that all stays well in our Covid world.
All students will be receiving a note with the details this week. We are looking at having a longer lunch to allow parents time with their children on the day. The Canteen is also going to provide catering on the day so please stay tuned for further information around this. This will be a K-6 event with all students encouraged to participate.
ANZAC Day Service
Tomorrow, Wednesday 21 April, at school we will be holding a small service to commemorate ANZAC Day. All parents are invited to attend. If you choose to attend please scan the Service NSW QR code that is located at each entrance to the school. If you have cold or flu like symptoms please do not attend the service. The service will begin at 11am on the K-2 site under the COLA.
On Sunday some of the school’s student leaders will be attending a service at Beecroft Cenetaph at 3pm. Thank you to Mrs Donoghue for her organisation and attending on the day to supervise the students.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Staff Development Day
Welcome back to our wonderful school for a fun and engaging Term 2. Yesterday we ran a staff development day which had four main components. Firstly, Mr Pinchbeck ran us through the updated Covid guidelines and some mandatory training around the Code of Conduct.
After that we were straight into developing our knowledge on the current research behind student reading development. As educators, it is paramount that we are up to date with current policy, guidelines, syllabus materials and research. The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) have recently published a draft update to the English and Mathematics syllabus documents for K-2 ‘the early years’. These documents dictate what content and skills teachers are required to teach our students. As a staff, we discussed some of the changes to this draft document that is due to be implemented in 2022. We then undertook an online Professional Learning session on Effective Reading strategies with a focus on Phonological Awareness. We will continue to participate in this Professional Learning throughout the term. If you would like to view the draft K-2 syllabus, you can do so here: https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/k-10/learning-areas/english-year-10/syllabus-development
Thank you to the Reading Team members for leading their groups through this session; Mrs Coventry, Ms Parras, Miss Dy, Miss Steel, Mrs Griffith and Ms Schmidt. We are all learning together and this was a very positive and informative session that set the tone for our term of professional development in Reading.
Our middle session had a Mathematics focus and was led by Mrs Amy Ford and Mrs Anne McLaren, who are part of a Department of Education state initiative, the Primary Mathematics Specialist Teachers Initiative. They are involved in gathering data, being provided with current, evidence-based research, conducting observations, guiding demonstration lessons and team teaching. Part of their role is to bring the knowledge and skills they have developed through being a part of the initiative, back to all staff and sharing this with them. The session they ran yesterday was highly engaging and reminded teachers of the importance of visual stimulus and hands-on manipulatives across the primary setting. Thank you Mrs Ford and Mrs McLaren for a wonderful session!
During the afternoon session, stages had some planning time together to ensure consistency of programs for the term. Thank you to our Assistant Principals for always leading their teams through focused and productive meetings.
Check in assessments – Year 4 and Year 6
Prior to the next P&C meeting, we invite you to join us for an information session on current evidence-based reading practices and how we are adopting these strategies at PHPS. Please see the below flyer for more information.
Well, it’s day one of Term 2 and we are already in the swing of things. The students are settled and happy to be back. The teachers are very keen to be back with their classes and enjoy daily learning and growth. Below are some pictures that make us super happy, with Covid restrictions easing, our daily routines are slowly coming back. Choir is back to rehearsing and across grade sport is occurring.
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson
