Mother’s Day Breakfast
Thank you to Miss Dwyer and Miss Parras for their wonderful organisation. It was absolutely amazing to see so many mums in attendance. We all hope that you had a marvellous breakfast on Friday and on Sunday your family spoilt you. Thank you to every mum for all that you do. It is very much appreciated.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN began today for Years 3 and 5. The students did very well in completing the assessment, which today was writing. Please ensure that your child continues to eat healthy options and gets a good night rest as we progress through the remaining assessments. Please keep your child at home if they are unwell. There is an opportunity for them to catch up if they are unwell when they return to school if it is within the next two weeks.
Parent Forum – Reading
Last Tuesday night the school’s Reading Team presented to parents about the school’s professional learning journey with reading, as well as tips and tricks for reading at home. Thank you to parents who braved the miserable weather to attend. We hope you gained some benefit from the presentation. Thank you to Mrs Wasson and her team for putting it all together. There will be further parent forums as the year progresses across a number of areas. Please keep an eye out for these sessions in the school newsletter.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Reading information session
Last Tuesday evening we held our first parent information session for the year. One of our main priorities for 2021 is a focus on data informed practice to improve our students reading skills. During this session, the reading team shared some of the activities that they do in class on a daily basis for reading and provided some suggestions for reading at home. We presented a lot of research that underpins our recent change to a more evidence-based approach to reading, where phonemic awareness and oral language are the foundations for reading development. We shared some of our school-based results to offer our community an understanding as to why we have targeted this area for teacher professional learning and made changes across PHPS. Thank you to all of the families who were able to attend, we loved sharing our journey with you! The feedback that you provided through the survey suggested that there wasn’t enough time! This will be taken into account for future sessions as will other points of feedback you provided. A big thank you to our reading team for sharing their fabulous knowledge; Mrs Coventry, Ms Parras, Miss Dy, Miss Steele, Ms Schmidt and Mrs Griffith.
Mother’s day breakfast
A wonderful morning was had on Friday where we had a fabulous turn out for our Mother’s Day breakfast! Covid restrictions didn’t seem to dampen the mood and many families turned up for their bacon, egg and sausage rolls. A big thank you to Ms Parras and Miss Dwyer for organising the event and to all of the teachers who were here extra early for set up and assisted in a variety of ways. Thank you for spending your morning with us, we hope that you had a wonderful Mother’s Day!
Around the school
Stage One Incursion
Educators from the Field Of Mars Educational centre visited Stage One today for an incursion. Students discussed and explored invertebrates, identifying different creatures and the parts of their bodies. They had a wonderful time with the light up magnifying glasses as you can see in the below photos.
Special Assembly
Last Wednesday we held our first K-6 assembly in over a year. This was an important assembly as we were sending off Mr Clarke, one of our Student Learning Support Officer’s who is heading off to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in trampolining. The students sat starstruck as we showed them a clip of Mr Clarke jumping; “He’s so high!”, “Woah!!”, “I can’t believe it!” were the main responses. Mr Clarke gave a wonderful speech about the importance of working hard, as you may not have the most ability in an area but working hard pays off. Mr Clarke was presented with a blow up kangaroo, ‘Penno’ who we expect to see in some photos during his travels. All the best Mr Clarke – can’t wait to see you jumping in the Olympics!
Why walk when you can conga?
The wet weather did not stop our K-2 students from having their morning play, forming an enormous conga line that swooped around the playground. It was lovely to see them all smiling and taking turns at being the leader.
5M
5M have been looking at rotation, reflection and translation in mathematics and by doing so have created a wonderful artwork on their back wall.
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

Pennant Hills Public School will be participating in Walk Safely to School Day again on the 14th of May 2021. We would love to see everyone aiming to walk to school that day as walking is a great way to be healthy and promote exercise. If student's are driven to school usually, dropping them 5 to 10 minutes away from school so that they can walk the rest of the way is a great idea! We will have APPLES and a STAMP to give to students who walk to school that day, and a chart for each class to complete.
We hope to have as many people as possible participating in this great day!!

National Simultaneous Storytime – Wednesday 19 May – 11 am
Live from the International Space Station!
As stated on the ALIA website:
“National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
Now in its 21st successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.”
This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 19 May 2021 at 11:00 am and features the book “Give me some space!” by Philip Bunting. For the first time, this story will be read by the astronauts from the International Space Station. Reading is definitely taking a giant leap into space!
Our school will be participating in this event so students may like to bring a “touch” of the universe e.g. sparkly scrunchie/ headband, alien mask, space item etc. that can be worn or displayed whilst viewing the story.
May the reading ‘force’ be with you!

President’s Message
I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s day yesterday, I’m sure all of the kids took good care of their mums! A big thank you to Ali Pride who organised and ran the Mother’s Day Stall again this year. I don't think the weather could have been worse on the day of the stall but Ali made sure no one missed out. Also thank you the PHPS teachers for hosting the Mother’s Day breakfast on Friday. It was very generous of Mr Pinchbeck and the team to put so much time and effort into making this a special morning for the PHPS mums.
Last week we had our first in person P&C meeting of 2021 as well as BBQ beforehand. It was great to see so many families come up for a sausage before attending the school’s reading update. It was agreed that we will hold meetings alternating between Zoom and in person as Zoom gives broader access for people to attend around family and work commitments.
The next P&C event will be the Planting Day this Sunday 16/5, 1-4pm. Dan and the Gardens & Grounds team have a great afternoon planned, look forward to seeing everyone there.
Have a great week
Luke
PHPS Planting day Sunday 16 May, 1-4pm
The Gardens and Grounds team are excited to be able to welcome families back on site for the upcoming Planting Day on Sunday 16 May afternoon from 1-4pm at the 3 to 6 site.
The aim is to complete the planting around the new sandstone steps (cnr Ramsay and Greycliffe) near the electronic sign at the 3-6 site.
Bring your gardening gear (gloves, clippers, rakes, wheelbarrow, shovels etc) and remember to sign in on arrival.

Over the last 2 years, students, staff and community members have been placing drink containers into the orange Otto bin at each school site. When the bins are full, the bottles, cans and cartons are transferred to bags which are collected by Red Frog company for recycling. The school receives 10 cents per item and Return and Earn has earned well over $1000 so far.
Any container with 10c on the label can be placed in the orange bins, preferably empty, uncrushed and with straws removed.
Special thanks to the students at cross country who conscientiously separated their poppers and plastic bottles from other rubbish. Two more large bags are now ready for collection by Red Frog! This is such a positive way of recycling containers and earning money for school resources as well.
