Attendance
Attendance at school is vital for all children. We are all aware that the more children are at school, the better their educational outcomes and development. With our School Improvement Plan all schools need to focus on student attendance and look at ways to support students whose attendance could improve. Our attendance data at Pennant Hills Public School is excellent, and I thank everyone for their focus and diligence in this area.
Here are some statistics to consider:
- Our average daily attendance rate is 95.2%. This is above State, Network and Statistically Similar School Group (SSSG).
- We have 88.2% of students attending more than 90% of the time. This is a new metric for measuring attendance.
- Our attendance rates have improved for each day of the week since 2019.
- Monday is the day with the lowest attendance rate at 94.2%.
- Wednesday has the highest attendance rate at 96.09%.
How can you help?
- Ensure students are at school on time each morning
- Medical appointments are booked for outside school hours
- If your child is away that you inform the school via a note to the teacher or the SZ app
Our data is very good and nearly all schools across the State would love this data. Thank you to everyone for their support in this area.
School Holidays
Enjoy the upcoming school holidays. Please stay safe and enjoy your time, whether that be travelling around or staying at home. Students are to return to school on Tuesday 13 July.
On Tuesday 13 July 2021, Pennant Hills Public School students will be engaged in a full day incursion ran by the Gurrawin company to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country! – calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.
The celebrations will be starting promptly at 9:30am and will be finishing up by 3:15pm. The day will be full of ancient and modern cultural activities including smoking ceremony, dance, artefacts appreciation, sustainability practices and storytelling. Students are encouraged to hand in their notes as soon as possible if they haven’t yet returned them.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Happy Holidays!
What an amazing term we have had! By now you would have received your child’s Semester One report and are celebrating their successes for this semester. Some questions you could ask your child around this time of the year and how they are going include;
- What are you most interested in at school?
- What is something you work hard at?
- What is something you are good at?
- What is something you are proud of?
- What are your goals for semester 2? Academic, social, sporting
- What have you learned you love and don’t like so much over this semester?
- How can I support you?
Thank you for a great Semester. If you have some time with your family over the next two weeks, please try to relax and enjoy it. We are looking forward to an engaging Semester Two. Have a safe and healthy break.
Staff Development Day
Students return to school on Tuesday 13 July for the commencement of Term Three. Staff are returning on Monday 12 July for a Staff Development Day. This day is made up of multiple components to support our students in their future learning;
- Mathematics – Number talks, hands-on learning and the importance of using manipulatives and visuals to make connections between concepts and deepen number understanding
- PLAN2 - A data collection tool that will assist us in having consistent information across the school around student learning in literacy and numeracy
- Reading – completing an online module on Phonemic Awareness
- Stage planning time
During the first week back, stage teams will also be working together on embedding their learning from the Professional Learning we have been undertaking into their daily classroom practice in reading.
Movie Night
We are looking forward to seeing all of our students here for Movie Night this Thursday! Please see further down in the newsletter for additional details. Looking forward to some movie time – remember to rug up, it gets cold in the hall!
Around the School
Students in 5M have been learning about 3D shapes. Using newspaper sides and joiners they are building a variety of polyhedra in an attempt to ‘discover’ Euler’s Rule by finding a pattern in the numbers.
2B have been creating tracks for the robot mice. A very collaborative tasks where each student decided the role they would play within their group.
Literacy groups across K-2 this morning were a buzz with learning!
Charlie from 6S showcasing his created board game as a comprehension task during literacy sessions. He read a book called Mythology and he demonstrated his understanding of the text by creating a monopoly style game with task cards and locations to match the text. Awesome work!
Kind Regards

Vegetable Garden
This week the Eco Warriors created mini greenhouses for three vegetable plants; lettuce, spinach and celery. A greenhouse can be a great way to offer protection and more stable temperatures for greenery. They are often used for keeping the cold, and pests away from precious plants. The Eco Warriors worked in teams to create pyramid-shaped greenhouses. When the vegetables are well established, we are hoping to plant them in our school vegetable garden. Hopefully soon, you might be able to taste these in your canteen lunches!
Spuds, spuds, spuds!
In the next few weeks, the Eco Warriors will be entering in a Spud Growing competition. Bunnings runs the competition and kindly provided us the bucket and potato. The aim of the project is to grow the biggest and most potatoes only using an average size bucket (with holes for drainage) and soil. The spud plant cannot exceed the circumference of the bucket but can exceed the height. Tune in for our Spud growing progress!
Bread Tags for Wheelchairs
Keep up the bread tag collection! Thank you to everyone who has donated and has become a part of the wonderful community coming together to raise funds for those in need of wheelchairs in South Africa who are unable to buy their own. Bread Tags for Wheelchairs was born in 2006 when founder Mary Honeybun had retired from nursing but still wanted to help others. Mary was also passionate about the environment and was aware that a lot of people in need of wheelchairs in South Africa were unable to buy their own. As a result, Mary came up with the idea of recycling plastic to raise funds to buy wheelchairs and partnered with plastic moulding company, Zibo Containers.
A message from the Eco Warriors and the Green Team
We are asking for any donations of compost, soil and/or mulch to refresh our garden beds. Even any spare buckets or flexitubs to use as compost bins around the school. If you would like to donate, please email the school and they will forward it to Mrs Dakin or Miss Dy, or let your child know and they can pass on the message to Mrs Dakin or Miss Dy.
Thank you to all for supporting the PHPS Green Team!

Hi All
It’s hard to believe we’ve almost made it to the end of Term 2, I’m sure all of the PHPS kids (and teachers!) are looking forward to the winter break. It’s also a good time to pause and say thank you to all of the P&C volunteers who assisted throughout the term, you’ve helped make PHPS what it is. Term 3 should be another great one as we continue to restart the various P&C activities post COVID and planning is well underway for the Trivia night later in the year.
I hope everyone has a great break.
Luke
