Education Week
This year’s theme is ‘Lifelong learners’ and celebrates education as a lifelong journey from before a child enters an early childhood setting, progressing to primary and secondary school, and continuing their learning journey into adulthood; learning a trade, entering tertiary education, or the workforce.
Continuous learning is critical for success throughout life and everyone can be a lifelong learner.
The following link will take you to some virtual events offered by the NSW Department of Education for this year’s Education Week, Virtual events (nsw.gov.au)
Unfortunately, with the current climate we are unable to celebrate Education Week in our normal fashion. We do plan to showcase the wonderful work the students have done in the classroom when that is possible.
In Mrs Wasson’s section below, you will see what some of our students have been up to whilst Learning From Home.
Learning from Home Packs – Week 4
For those families that require the hard copies of the Learning From Home packs please note that for next week, and beyond if the lock down is extended, you will need to book in via the system we use for Parent Teacher interviews. This change is needed due to the limited numbers I am allowed to have on site each day. Please use the following link, School Interviews and enter the code, bmyn5 . Select your desired time to come to the 3-6 site. This booking site will be open from Thursday morning at 10am. All packs will be able to be collected this Friday or Monday for next week’s pack. Please only come and collect a pack if you need one. Please do not just call in to the office to collect a pack as you will be politely turned away. This process to ensure we are following our Covid-19 Safety Plan to assist you.
Cancellations
Unfortunately, yesterday I was notified of the following cancellations.
- Festival of Instrumental Music planned for Monday 6 to Friday 10 September

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
The theme for Education Week this week is Lifelong Learners. Something that we instil here at PHPS with our students and staff. At this moment in time, we are proud of our students for adapting to new learning environments so quickly, we are proud of our staff for supporting each other and flipping to an online environment without hesitation and with the students best interests at the forefront and we are proud to be part of the Pennant Hills community, for the support they have given the school in keeping updated through the SZapp and being patient while we navigate this terrain. Not to mention supporting their children in Learning from Home!
Around the School
As you would be aware, school looks a little bit different these days. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate all of the wonderful things that our students are doing, often in the comfort of their own home! Thank you to our students for continuing their education in such a positive manner, these times are a true testament to your dedication to your schooling. And a big thank you to all of the parents who are supporting not only the school but your child/ren in a learning from home environment. We are all doing the best that we can and we are so glad that most families are taking this in their stride, doing what they can, because that’s all that you can do! Don’t forget to have a break and some alone time.
This week we are featuring the work of Stage Three. These are just a couple of examples of the submissions we are seeing via Google Classroom.
Mandala art is a geometric design that holds a great deal of symbolism in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. The mandala represents an imaginary palace that is thought about during meditation. The mandala's purpose is to help make ordinary minds into calm and happy ones and to help with healing.

A poem by Althea who wrote about the main character in the novel she is reading as part of her Personal Novel Study project.
I’m Vee, I wake up every morning with my mum in my face.
I'm still sleeping but she is awake.
All she cares about is followers and likes.
Her life is on her phone while I’m in real life.
My favourite day is Saturday because in code that is Faturday.
Pancakes, jelly beans and sugar on the way.
My mum made me an Insta-star. It's not like I care.
Don’t follow me, there is nothing I need to share.
My best friend is Annabelle.
She loves making slime.
Unlike my mum, her life is offline.
My whole life is up there.
It is like it is on display ,for everyone to see.
So please just don’t follow me.
I have created this person called anti Vee.
She does everything my mum despises.
She made jam noodles and dyed her hair and that wasn’t enough to break her instagram.
Life for her was miserable but her instagram was thriving.
There’s a lot of things that come and go.
Well that’s all for now.
That’s me , I’m Vee.
I know one thing in my life has to go.
Yeah.
- Roll a car (or marble, or anything that rolls evenly) down a ramp and let it roll along the floor until it stops.
- Measure the distance it travels.
- Investigate how you can change the forces acting on the car to affect how far it travels.
Then, how can you keep the height and length of the ramp the same, but make the car travel a shorter distance?
By Eddie;
Distance of the car (4 blocks high, you can not see the 4th block because of the angle of the photo):117cm.
To make it go further this time Instead I did it 6 blocks high instead of 4 blocks high. Distance with 6 blocks:150cm.
To make the 4 block steepness a shorter distance this time I did it on carpet. Distance:13cm. The reason for it being a shorter distance is because of friction and how the carpet is a lot more bumpy than the other type of floor which was used for the first 2 experiments.
And also from Kanj;
My car rolled off a ramp at 35 degrees and it went 21.2 centimetres. To make my car go slower, I put a handball on top of it and strapped it on using some rubber bands. It only travelled 13.6 centimetres that time. I tried strapping on many different items to my car and the one that made it the slowest was a kitchen knife (I was careful) and it only travelled 4.1 centimetres.

6M Cooking Show!
Last week we set a challenge for ourselves to make dinner one night, or bake something creative! Each day a different group of students share their creations! Below, Callum created a yummy brownie slice that the whole family enjoyed and Kate made Tacos for her family dinner!

Please see the following message relating to the Premier's Spelling Bee.
"We are mindful that participation in the Premier’s Spelling Bee requires organisation and preparation that is not possible during this time.
As a precautionary measure, the Premier’s Spelling Bee is postponed until Term 4 2021. The deadline for names has been postponed, with no date yet set, and the forms will remain open until after all schools return to the classroom."

Keep practising as all is not yet lost! My fingers are crossed for Term 4!!
Did you know that PHPS students can borrow eBooks?
Our library subscribes to the Wheelers ePlatform which allows students to borrow eBooks.
Using a device via the ePlatform app or through a web browser, students have access to a digital library which has a collection of over 1800 books. eBooks can be easily borrowed and are returned automatically. They can be read on a computer, laptop or mobile device.
This video explains how simple it is to download the ePlatform app. Alternatively, our school’s eLibrary can be accessed via this link http://pennanthil.eplatform.co/ or the Oliver school library website which is accessed via the DoE student portal.
The students use their school username and password to sign in to our school’s ePlatform. They can borrow up to two books at a time for a two week period. Please note that these borrowing rules are set by Wheelers not the school.

Term 3 - Band from Home
As you are all aware there is no on-site activities at present. The band program will be run via Google Classrooms and Zoom for the time being.
Messages
Both our conductors are sending out messages via the WhatsApp groups about Google Classrooms and the Zoom sessions they are going to be running. Please ensure you are keeping an eye on those groups so you have the most up to date information.
If you have any questions please post them in those groups or send us an email.
If you are not in these groups please send us an email and we will add you in.
Google Classrooms for Band
For those new to Google Classrooms for band please see the information below.
To use Google Classrooms for the PHPS Band program the student will need access to a standard free Gmail account. Their DET issued Google account will not work for the Band Classroom, nor will a Gsuite corporate email account.
If you do not have a Gmail account already, or wish them to have their own for this purpose please use the following steps to get online with band.
Go to the Google Account creation page at https://accounts.google.com/SignUp
Follow the steps on the screen to set up your account.
Use the account you created to sign in to Gmail.
Once signed into Gmail open a new tab and go to https://classroom.google.com
On the Google Classroom page toward the top right hand corner there will be a “+” icon, click this to “Create or Join a Class”
Enter the Band class code for your child's band
- Senior Band - x6zdsff
- Intermediate Band - qpukhri
- Training Band - nqr5i4s
- Jazz Band - ak4q7my
If they are logged into their DET Google account they can switch accounts by clicking on the small profile picture icon in the top right of a Google application screen, and select a different account.
If you are having trouble, please let us know. I am happy to set up a Zoom session for parents to go through the steps. We want the students to be in the best position possible for a return to rehearsals at school. The music which is being disseminated and worked on through Google Classrooms will likely be used for any performances which we may be able to take part in later in the year.

A Note from the Committee Convener
I'd like to preemptively thank everyone for their support during this time. Conducting a music program online is a difficult task. We're all trying our best, and will endeavour to keep it as interesting as possible for the students. But we'll need your help in encouraging your children to continue to take part in the band exercises. Additionally, if you're under any financial pressure due to the lockdown and are concerned about band fees, please reach out via email. Any correspondence will be treated under the strictest confidence.
