Response protocols for COVID-19 cases
The department has established systems and protocols with NSW Health to manage and respond where there is a case of COVID-19 in the school community.
The following outlines the response protocols for schools when there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 in an educational setting.
The department has updated the confirmed case protocols in line with the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC).
Research continues to show that COVID-19 is a mild illness in the vast majority of children and young people.
Under the Public Health Order, a person is required to let the school or their workplace know that they (staff) or their child (parents and carers) have tested positive for COVID-19. They must record the result via the Service NSW app or Service NSW website if this was done via a rapid antigen test (RAT).
Parents and carers are asked to select the name of the school or early childhood centre when registering a positive RAT via ServiceNSW.
Registering the positive RAT with Service NSW is a requirement of the Public Health Order and helps the department and NSW Health track COVID-19 in schools and provide access to additional health supports for the person as required. In line with community settings, schools are not required to conduct contact tracing to identify all contacts of the confirmed case in their school. In most cases, regular communication can be sent to the school community reminding them that there are confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the school community, ask them to monitor for symptoms and get tested if they develop even the mildest of symptoms.
To minimise disruption to face-to-face learning and reduce in-school transmission of COVID-19, schools may be directed by the department’s Health, Safety and Staff Wellbeing case management team to temporarily adopt some or all additional COVID-smart measures for a short period of time as a “circuit breaker”. These additional measures may include:
- ceasing or rescheduling large indoor gatherings (such as assemblies)
- ceasing off-site and inter-school activities
- mask wearing for adults and high school students
- limiting visitors to schools
- separating cohorts of students
- symptomatic use of RATs
- learning from home.
Generally, we expect temporary measures would be introduced for a one week period (five school days), with the situation re-assessed at that point. Where additional measures are required, these will be included in updated communications provided for your school community.
Share Our Space
We are open on the 3-6 site on weekends and public holidays only as our school has a vacation care.
The outdoor facilities at our school will be available to use from 8 am to 5 pm on weekends and public holidays only as part of Share Our Space.
Please visit edu.nsw.link/ShareOurSpace to find out which one of our gates will be open before you visit.
We’re also keen to know what you think about using our school during the holidays through our online feedback form.
Public Holiday – Thursday 22nd September
This Thursday has been declared a Public Holiday to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. As such all NSW Department of Education schools will be non-operational. This means that there will not be any staff on site to provide supervision. Normal operations will resume on Friday 23 September and all students are expected to be in attendance.
School Vacation
We wish you a safe and relaxing school vacation period from Saturday. Students and staff return to school on Monday 10 October 2022. Please note that the Monday is NOT a Staff Development Day. Students will be able to wear the summer uniform from the beginning of Term 4. Have a great break and we look forward to Term 4. We are very excited as the Dance Spectacular is finally taking place next term after an imposed hiatus, as well as many other exciting activities for the students.
If you see any unauthorised activity taking place on the school grounds over the holiday period please feel free to call School Security on 1300 88 00 21, or if the matter is urgent please call the Police on 000. The NSW Police Local Area Command for our school can be reached on 9879 9699. We thank you for keeping an eye over the school.
Kind Regards

Principal
A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Welcome to the last week of Term 3 and haven’t we been busy! It’s been wonderful to have families on site for so many events at the end of this term. Term 4 is looking crammed full of events, please stay tuned for more information at the beginng term 4.
BIG SCIENCE, BIG FUN FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT
What an amazing evening! 2 sold out shows! Thank you to everyone for coming along to the BIG SCIENCE, BIG FUN show presented by Fizzics. Our presenter, Ben was truly engaging and I know that a lot of the presentations evoked quality conversations within families. We had smoke machines, liquid nitrogen, electricity, wind power and flames to name a few things! The feedback we have had so far is that it was a great event so we hope to hold something similar next year during Science Week.
Performance Assembly
We welcomed back our performance assemblies this term, with our first being for families only. We had choirs perform, the strings group, the bands and dance groups. The students did a wonderful job in their performance, well done! Thank you to the teachers and conductors who were involved in the organisation of the day and to those teachers who carried on while members of their classes were missing. We look forward to holding another Performance Assembly next term.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RELIEVING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to Talia and Charlotte who represented our school at the State Festival of Instrumental music. This is the first time the festival has used primary school students to be the comperes. Both girls represented our school doing an amazing job. Well done girls, it was a very special teaching moment for me.
Congratulations also go out to our 7 string players who joined a massed Sting Ensemble of 200 students, playing at the Sydney Town Hall. Well done. Also, congratulations Quinn and Kaiden who played as part of the NSW State Junior Wind Band. What a great experience to all our talented students. Well done.

2022 raffle update #1 – week 10
Raffle books coming home this week
The countdown is on to our raffle to be drawn at the Dance Spectacular on Friday 28 October. This week, the eldest child in each family will bring home three books of raffle tickets so you can start selling over the school holidays.
Tickets are $2.50 each and with such incredible prizes your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues won’t want to miss out!
Once you have sold your tickets, please pay via Flexischools and return your stubs to the office. Write your name and class on the front of each book you sell. We’ll be drawing early bird prizes in weeks 1 and 2 for ticket sellers who get their booklets back quickly and there will also be prizes for students who sell the most ticket books.
Volunteers still needed
We still need parent volunteers to help coordinate collecting ticket books, and recording ticket sales, reconciling payments and arranging the shopping centre sales and prize draws.
If you can spare some time to help make the raffle a success, please contact phppandc@gmail.com or Chris K on 0424 744 315.
Can you help at the Bunnings BBQ?
We’ll be selling tickets and sausage sandwiches at Thornleigh Bunnings on Sunday 16 October. If you can spare an hour to lend a hand, follow this link to sign up online.
Thanks to our amazing sponsors
Thanks to Saliba Estate Agents, Pennant Hills Toyota, Pennant Hills Market Place, IGA and Jazzy Photography for supporting this year’s raffle. We’re aiming to raise $15,000 towards putting solar panels on our school, so let’s get selling to make this raffle a success!

Band Recruitment for 2023 - Calling all students in Year 2 to 5.
What if a large number of scientific studies found there was one activity that could improve our cognitive function, help our memory systems work effectively, help us learn language, help us moderate our emotional states, help us solve complex problems and help our brains be healthier into later life? What if that activity was also enjoyable for everyone involved?
There is one such activity: Music Education.
Entry to the PHPS Band Program is open to all children from who will be in Year 3 to Year 6 next year. It is not expected that your child has any musical knowledge when starting in the band program. We’re here to provide that introduction to what we hope will be an exciting musical journey for your child.
If your child is interested in joining the band program for next year please fill in our Expression of Interest form.
Music by Moonlight & Jazz Improv
Excellent performance by the Senior Concert Band at Normanhurst West Public Schools Music-by-Moonlight event on Saturday evening. You sounded awesome! Also big congratulations go out to all the students who participated in our inaugural Jazz Improv Workshop on Sunday afternoon. I'm sure we'll be getting some excellent unique solos in some of the Jazz band pieces in the months to come.

If they've not completed their Term 1 & Term 2 worksheets please get these signed off by your tutor ASAP. If you're working on AMEB examinations instead please let us know so we can make note of it.

Regarding Wet Weather
If it's raining the flutes, clarinets, & trumpet players can put their cases under their chairs inside and pack away in there.
Unfortunately the larger instruments are a little harder, ideally if it's only a little wet they will need to pack away outside on the ramped area. If it's bucketing down, then having them pack away inside may be necessary.
