Father’s Day Breakfast
A huge thank you to everyone who was able to attend our annual Father’s Day breakfast last Friday morning. It was great to see so many families attend the breakfast to acknowledge their father or significant male role model in a small way. We hope that it was the start of a great weekend for all the Dads within our community.
A huge thank you to Mrs Gardener and Mrs McCloghry for their organisation of the day. It was truly remarkable and seemed to flow throughout the morning. I arrived at school very early to begin the BBQ and these two ladies were already well into their morning. Thank you to all other staff who also assisted on the morning to ensure it was a success.
Education Week
This week the school is celebrating a belated Education Week. Yesterday saw the Walkathon take place. It was a great success with many parents and friends arriving at school for the picnic lunch and to support their children. Thank you for making time to attend. A special thank you to Miss Hansell for her organisation and working collaboratively with the P&C to make the event such a success.
Yesterday afternoon we held the 3-6 Student Showcase. It was extremely well-attended by families with students proudly showing off their work. I was able to visit all classrooms several times throughout the afternoon and there was a positive vibe in all the rooms. Well done boys and girls, it is great to see that you are proud of your work.
Tomorrow will be the Performance Assembly which begins at 1:45pm in the Hall, for parents only. Then from 3:30-5pm will be the Student Showcase for students in K-2.
Thank you to everyone for their contributions in making our Education Week such a positive experience for all.
Beecroft Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival
Last week Mr Bryant and Mrs Milligan supervised approximately 50 students from Pennant Hills PS as they represented us at the Beecroft Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival. Firstly, thank you to them for their commitment to providing this opportunity to the students, and to the parents who were able to make it there on the day to support the students. It was a new experience for Beecroft Zone to hold their carnival at Sydney Olympic Park and despite finishing later than was planned we believe that it was a better experience and opportunity for all. We had several students who were successful on the day gaining entry to the Sydney North PSSA Athletics Carnival. We wish these students all the very best in a few weeks’ time as they represent the Beecroft Zone and our school.
NAPLAN – Individual Student Reports
Students in Years 3 and 5 will receive their individual NAPLAN report today. These are being sent home with the students. If your child is away today, please make contact with their teacher to collect their report from tomorrow or wait until your child returns to school. If you have any questions about your child’s academic progress, please make a time to speak with their teacher.
NAPLAN – Whole School
This year’s overall NAPLAN data is very pleasing from a school’s point of view. I will highlight some of the results below, however, it is important to note that these impressive results are due to the dedication of the school’s teachers to improve their pedagogy by their participation in professional development sessions and changing their practice to best suit the needs of the students. This continued to be a priority for the staff, even during the challenges of Covid to ensure that their improvement continued to benefit the students. It is also important to remember and acknowledge that great work of the teachers providing quality learning experiences for the students during last year’s Term 3 lockdown where nearly all students were learning from home.
The school executive focus on the average NAPLAN scores, and other measures, to see if as a school we are improving. We also triangulate this data and compare to our Similar Statistical Schools Groups (SSSG) and the State. This gives us an indication of how we are tracking compared to other schools.
There are five domains for Years 3 and 5 who sit NAPLAN. They are Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy. Our average scores improved in every domain, and we also had greater improvement in each domain compared to the State and SSSG. In many instances the State and SSSG data showed a decline. We did not have a decline in any area. I believe this is a remarkable achievement given the challenges that everyone has faced over the last two and half years.
The data goes back to 2010 and for the following domains the school achieved its highest average score; Year 3 Reading, Year 3 Writing, Year 3 Spelling, Year 5 Writing, and Year 5 Spelling. The results for the following domains are as follows;
- Year 3 Grammar & Punctuation – 2nd highest score (by 0.1)
- Year 3 Numeracy - 3rd highest score
- Year 5 Numeracy and Reading - 4th highest score
- Year 5 Grammar & Punctuation - 7th highest score.
There is also a category that is called Premier’s Priorities. This category measures the percentage of students achieving in the Top 2 bands for Reading and numeracy for Years 3 and 5. This year our score was 71.95%, which means that out of all the results in these two domains 71.95% of students were in the Top 2 Bands. This is also the highest score for the school.
By no means is our journey complete and staff continue to work towards improving their practice based upon the variety of data sources at our disposal. However, it is important to celebrate the successes along the way and this is one of those times. Well done to everyone. You should be very proud of your efforts. Early next term I plan to arrange a night to present the NAPALN results for this year to the community. As soon as I can lock in a date I will be sure to let everyone know.
Kind Regards
