Band Success
Last week I wrote about the success of the Jazz Band at the Ryde Eisteddfod. This week I am able to share more wonderful news stemming from the Band program. The school’s three bands; Senior Concert Band, Intermediate Concert Band and Training Band all performed at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival. This festival involved about 180 schools from across the state. All bands performed outstandingly well on the day with all three bands being awarded a Silver Award. This is a fabulous achievement. Well done to all involved. A special mention to Mr Stalenberg who oversees the Band Program and liaises with the school, thank you for everything you do to ensure these children have the opportunity to perform.
COVID-Smart Measures to Continue Throughout Term 3
From Week 5, Monday 15 August, the following COVID-smart measures will remain in place in our schools:
- Students and staff must stay at home if unwell and not return to school until symptom-free.
- If a student or staff member is symptomatic, they should take a rapid antigen test (RAT) and isolate until they receive a negative test result.
- Masks continue to be strongly encouraged for all staff, students and school visitors, particularly when indoors and when physical distancing is not possible. Masks continue to be mandatory for all staff working with students at greater risk of severe illness if they were to get COVID-19.
- Household or close contacts who are symptom-free can attend mainstream schools if they receive a negative RAT result every day for 5 school days and wear a mask (staff and high school students) while on site.
- Vaccinations are no longer required for staff except for those working in SSPs. We continue to recommend all staff and eligible students and their families to keep up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations, including getting a booster shot.
- Visitors, regardless of their vaccination status, are able to come to school sites but may be required to wear a mask if in close proximity to students at greater risk of severe illness if they were to get COVID-19.
- Natural ventilation and personal hygiene will continue to be encouraged.
- Events, gatherings and overnight excursions are able to go ahead. We will consider the risks associated and make COVID-smart decisions based on the current situation with COVID-19 and other illnesses in the community.
- Additional circuit breaker measures may be implemented at school through consultation with the Health, Safety and Staff Wellbeing case management team, when needed.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Year 6 Farewell
This year, we are planning to transition our Year 6 Farewell to a purely Year 6 event. In previous years, the families of Year 5 students have organised and paid for the event and Year 5 students have attended. Last year, due to the increasing numbers of our Year 6 students and the impact of Covid, only Year 6 attended the farewell and it was well received by the students, it made for a very special time. This year, we are embracing as a transition year into a purely Year 6 event in terms of attendance, organisation and set up. We are aware that the majority of our current Year 6 families paid for this event last year and as such, the Year 6 farewell for families who paid last year will generously be covered by the school and the P&C.
We do, however, need your help in the organisation and set up. The Committee last year was absolutely amazing at pulling it together in such short notice, we really hope that some of our Year 6 families can help out once again!
Please, if you are able to volunteer your time or skills, we will be holding a Year 6 Farewell Committee meeting and would love for you to join.
When: Wednesday next week at 3:30pm (24 August)
Where: Silver seats in the 3-6 playground
Please complete this Google Form with your intention to attend and to provide some suggested themes for the event. https://forms.gle/RyRoHERJXBiv98CM9
If you would like to be a part of the Year 6 Farewell Committee but are unable to attend the meeting, please email me at pennanthil-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au attention Kate Wasson - Year 6 Farewell Committee.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at the Year 6 Farewell Committee meeting.
Community Event – Big Science, Big Fun!
We are so excited to welcome our community back on school grounds for a large community event!
Please save the date – Tuesday 6 October.
The show will begin promptly at 5pm and continue until 6pm. After this the P&C meeting will be held at 7:30 if you would like to continue on with other community members.
There will be a note to follow.

Next week, Book Week is being celebrated throughout Australia. Since 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together through this annual event. Its aim is to highlight the importance of reading and to celebrate Australian children’s literature. This year, the theme is “Dreaming with eyes open …”
Book Character parade
To celebrate this event, we will be holding a Book Character parade next Tuesday 23 August. On this day, we are asking the students to come dressed as their favourite book character for this special fun filled parade. There has been discussion during library lessons to help students with ideas for their costumes, with the suggestion that some students may like to use their creative talents and make a costume. The costumes do not need to be elaborate and there are plenty of ideas on Pinterest and Google if you need some inspiration.
Parents are invited to attend the parade which will be held on the K-2 site at 10:30am.
We look forward to celebrating this literary event and seeing amazing book characters.

President’s Message
Hi All
Big thanks to Bec S for arranging the Art and Sip Night last Friday, sounds like a very successful and fun event!
Our annual Walkathon has been postponed due to the Cross Country date moving to August 2. We will update you as soon as we have a new date. More details are below.
Students can continue to gain sponsorship using the form in preparation for the Walkathon.
PHPS Raffle Planning - raising funds towards solar panels for the school!
We are excited to start planning our Annual P&C Raffle - to be drawn at the Dance Spectacular on Friday 28th October. The raffle raises a significant amount of funds, which will be paid towards our 2022 initiative of solar panels for the school.
We need plenty of parents to support the raffle as many hands make this light, social and fun! Volunteering can be done in your own time and will not require a big commitment.
Here’s the link to Sign Up to the team. This is our major fundraiser this year so a parent from every class to join the team would be ideal.
The September P&C (Tuesday 6 September 7.30pm) will be held in person in the K-2 hall, it would be great to catch up with many of you in person!
The P&C is seeking volunteers for Gardens & Grounds, supporting occasional working bees and specific projects in keeping the school grounds looking great. If you are interested, please email me - pandcpresident@gmail.com.
Have a great week.

Walkathon - New date to be confirmed
A great day for families to watch our children walk laps around the school, raising money for each lap. We have some amazing prizes that will be confirmed soon!
What should I do?
NOW
- Students were sent Sponsorship forms home before the holidays. Here’s the form again if you need it (dates to be updated)
- Ask family and friends for sponsorship eg $1 per lap.
- K-2 students usually complete 5-6 laps of the K-2 site
- 3-6 students usually complete 6+ laps of the K-2 site
- Money is collected after the walkathon once the number of laps walked are known
ON THE DAY
- Come along to the Walkathon on the day (once confirmed) to cheer them on!
- Order your lunch through the canteen with your child or bring your own picnic
AFTER THE EVENT
- Ask for the sponsorship money based on the number of laps on the lap card your child will bring home.
- Pay the total via Flexischools
- Wait for the prize draw for both sites - highest money raised (x 4) and a lucky draw for any sponsorship money paid before the final date.
Sign up to this great event here! We will update the date as soon as confirmed.
There is a field of science for everyone!! For me it is FOOD science.
In accordance with the NSW Government ban on single use plastics, the canteen is now dispensing wooden cutlery instead of plastic. Unfortunately the wooden spoons are no match for the Frozen Juice Cups that are very popular at the 3-6 site. We have been encouraging the students to bring a metal spoon from home that they can rinse after use and keep in their lunch box (to be given a good wash at home). If you could assist by allowing your child to bring an inexpensive and not precious teaspoon from home it would be most helpful.
On Friday September 3, we are planning to do over the counter sales during lunchtime at K-2. We will need a few helpers to make this possible. If you would like to help out I would love to hear from you!!
If you have any questions, or would like to be involved in the canteen, please contact me.
