Stage 3 Milson Island Camp
As I write today’s newsletter, I am lucky enough to be looking out over the beautiful Hawkesbury River from Milson Island as we enjoy our breakfast. We arrived yesterday morning and participated in our first activity straight after lunch. The groups either went for a bushwalk and cooked damper, participated in archery and raft building activities or kayaking. All great activities given the day's temperature, as they all included a cool down in the shallow end of the pool at the end of the day. Today promises to be the same, with beautiful weather, but hopefully a little cooler. The students are having a great time and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Thank you for the teachers; Mrs Macnaughtan, Miss Steel, Mrs Milligan, Miss Maitland and Mr Bryant (who will arrive this afternoon) for giving their time to allow the students to have such a memorable experience.
P&C Meeting
Tonight’s P&C meeting will begin at 7pm in the hall for Christmas drinks with the meeting beginning at 7:30pm. Thank you to everyone involved in the P&C this year for all your efforts supporting the school and students in so many ways. We look forward to seeing you there. Unfortunately I will not be able to make tonight but I wish to acknowledge and thank the great work the P&C does each year. Your contributions are amazing.
Pennant Hills High School Presentation Evening
Tonight, I will be attending Pennant Hills High School’s Presentation Evening. Each year I am given the privilege of presenting the Year 7 recipients with their award. It is a great honour to do so, and I get a great thrill when it is a former student of Pennant Hills Public School. Personally tonight holds a slightly greater significance as my daughter who is in Year 8 will be delivering the Acknowledgement of Country and possibly receiving an award. I look forward to seeing current and former families of Pennant Hills Public School their tonight to acknowledge these students for their efforts.
P&C Obstacool
This Thursday the P&C have organised Obstacool for our students. We thank them for this initiative. All students are to come dressed in mufti, bring a change of clothes and towel. Please ensure that one of the sets of clothes are able to get wet. Please see this morning’s SZapp message for all payment details.
Celebration of Learning
Next Monday our school will be holding its annual Celebration of Learning. This year we will be back to normal, holding this event at Pennant Hills High School. We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate the success of the students this year with their learning. Thank you to Mr Warren (Principal of Pennant Hillis High School) for allowing us to use their hall and for making time to attend the 3-6 assembly. We are very grateful for your time. Thank you also to Mr Mark Anderson (Director of Educational Leadership) for also making time to attend our awards ceremony.
Semester Two Student Academic Reports
Next Monday all students will receive their Semester Two Academic Report. These reports will highlight your child’s achievement during Semester Two against the mandatory syllabus outcomes. The teachers have spent countless hours collating all their information (data) from throughout the semester to assess where the students are in the learning journey against the identified outcomes. Thank you to the teachers for their amazing efforts with this task. As always if you have any concerns about your child’s academic progress, please speak with their teacher first. They are the best placed to work through your query.
Kind Regards
Matt Pinchbeck
Principal
The Principal's Pizza Lunch is coming up on Thursday 15 December.
Students are eligible to attend the prestigeous lunch after they have submitted their 3 Principal's Awards to their teacher.
If your child has received 3 Principal's Awards and haven't submitted them, now is the time to do it!

Year 5 Camp – Milson Island
Last week our awesome Year 5 students attended their 3 day camp at Milson Island – what an experience! I did place some photos in last week's newsletter but so much more happened after the newsletter went out that I wanted to share just a little bit more. Our students were well-behaved, particularly during the evenings. Some wonderful night time activities were organised for them and they had an absolute blast! Thank you students for ensuring everyone had a great time and thank you to the attending teachers; Mr Bryant, Mrs McLaren and Mrs Griffith.
Native Nibbles
Saturday was planting day! We now have hundreds of native tube stock finding their roots in our Native Nibbles garden – it looks amazing and we can’t wait for it to become a little bit more established so our students can get in and have a good sticky beak. The next Native Nibbles working bee will be around installing gabion benches, which will occur next year. Thank you everyone for your hard work and a huge thank you to Kate A for driving the ship, without her enthusiasm and dedication, we would not have the garden where it is today. A true asset to our school community.
Meet The Locals
We were so lucky to have an interested echidna wander on site last week! What a wonderful sight for our students to see!
Kind Regards

2023 PHPS MASCOT DESIGN COMPETITION
Our Wellbeing team has been busy researching in preparation for 2023. After speaking with Uncle Laurie, a local Aboriginal elder, we have been able to determine a new mascot for our school. Announcing our new mascot as a:
Common Brushtail Possum
We are asking students across all of K-6 for their artistic talent. If you have a love for drawing, creating or designing, we would like you to submit a design created by YOU. Your design must:
-
include a brushtail possum
-
be A4 in size
-
be created using a thin, black sharpie only (no colour)
All designs should be handed in to the K-2 office (3-6 students, please give your design to your teacher and they will send it to the right place). All designs are due by MONDAY 12 DECEMBER. The staff will shortlist the entrants and a Google Form link will be sent in next week’s newsletter to vote for your favourite design.
Happy designing!!!

Student Borrowing Has Now Finished For The Year
Many thanks to all those students who have returned their library books.
Borrowing has now finished for the year so all books must be returned so that the library can be organised for the coming year.
Overdue book reminders are still being issued so have a good look under beds, bookshelves and anywhere else you think the books may be. If your child attends BASC, please check there too.
If your child receives a reminder notice and you cannot find the book, please let me know so we can double-check the shelves.
Happy book hunting!

Native Nibbles Garden Update
“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” - Audrey Hepburn
Saturday was a day for the believers when 30-ish volunteers turned up making short work of tucking in 200-ish petite plants to their new bed. With so many hands (big and small) working together we were done by midday and didn't need the afternoon shift at all. The weather was perfect and great fun was had with chatting, digging, planting, running, chasing, watering the plants… then turning the hose on each other!
This was the final chapter of part one of Native Nibbles, an exciting project aimed at educating our kids about the rich botanical history of our First Nations people as well as the soil/food web, biodiversity and sustainability… plus it’ll look pretty gorgeous when it's all grown too!
Next year we will embark on part two… “The building of bench seats”. Stay tuned for more information on that bit of fun in the new year.
In the meantime The Garden Group wishes everyone a safe and happy summer.
Big thanks to our wonderful volunteers:
Bec & Zane; Jedd, Elyse & Xavier; Caroline & Andrei; Aidan; Luke & Sabrina; Liam and Max; Monika; Sherry &Caitlin; Kat, Clementine and Teddy; Sally, Ava & Chloe, Melina & Xavier; Sonya & Rhia; Mike, Alma, Elsie & Will; aaaaand the lovely Peta P. With a special shout out to Chris Laing who, my crystal ball has informed me, will be integral to ensuring our new plants survive the summer!
Big Big thanks also to Warada Ngurang (Hornsby Council nursery) for providing many of the plants for this project.
On Tuesday December 13 there will be NO LUNCH ORDERS as the whole school will be going to the movies, and Stage 1 are having their party day. The 3-6 canteen will open for an early recess. We will be selling our usual snacks, including Garlic Bread and Drinks. We will also be selling Ice Blocks.
Help with serving from 10:25 - 10:50am would be greatly appreciated.
Stages 2 and 3 will be having their Pizza Party days next Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
Apple Crumble will be back at 3-6 on Friday.
WE ARE STILL IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS for the following times please:
- RECESS: 3-6 only: 11-11:45am. Any day but especially FRIDAY
- LUNCH: Both sites: 1-1:45pm. Any day for 3-6. WEDNESDAY and FRIDAY for K-2 at this stage.
Please contact me if you are able to help at either of these times or if you would like to know more. It’s a fun and easy way to get involved in your child’s school life and they just love you being there.
All volunteers need a current “ Working With Children Check” which can be obtained through Service NSW.
If you have any questions, or would like to be involved in the canteen, please contact me.
