Staff Development Day Term 2
We are coming together as a system on Monday 24 April for the school development day at the start of Term 2. Together we will build a greater understanding of Aboriginal education and reconciliation as well as how we can collectively strengthen our practice to achieve better outcomes.
The purpose of the day is to carry out focused professional learning to sustain positive change in ensuring Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students have access to high-quality, culturally supportive learning environments. To ensure this we are looking at both educational outcomes and elements of wellbeing.
Our school will be joining Pennant Hills High School, Cherrybrook Public School, Beecroft Public School, West Pennant Hills Public School, and Thornleigh West Public School for professional learning. The day will begin with an Acknowledgement of Country that has been recorded by Indigenous students from all the schools. This recording took place this morning on our school grounds, and it was a real privilege to watch these students. There will be a welcoming address from the Secretary and Deputy Secretaries from the NSW Department of Education. We have arranged a keynote speaker. Ms Claverie is a Kamilaroi woman with over forty years’ experience in Aboriginal education across our Country. Then staff from the schools will be split into groups to participate in workshops looking at Aboriginal History and Culture. After lunch each school will return to their own grounds to focus on professional learning in their context. Staff at our school will be looking at their teaching and learning programs and how to improve Aboriginal education across the curriculum. It promises to be a great day and all staff are very much looking forward to it.
Opportunity Class Year 5 in 2024
Opportunity classes located in government primary schools cater for academically gifted Year 5 and Year 6 students with high potential. These classes help students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised teaching methods and educational materials at the appropriate level.
The Selective Education Unit administers the opportunity class placement process.
Parents normally apply when students are in Year 4. Students who are placed then attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. In the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with an opportunity class.
There is no provision to apply for Year 6 placement only.
There are 77 primary schools with opportunity classes across NSW. See a list of NSW primary schools with opportunity classes.
Parents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are encouraged to consider applying for selective and opportunity class placement. For further information and support parents can speak with their principal or contact their local Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing Advisor.
Online applications for Year 5 placement in an opportunity class in 2024 open on Thursday 30 March 2023 and close on Monday 15 May 2023. Read Information for Applicants for information about the process and important dates.
The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be conducted on Thursday 27 July 2023.

Planning Days
Each school receives a small amount of funding for ‘Quality Teaching, Successful Students’ which is for staffing allocation to enhance professional practice (https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/schools-funding/quality-teaching--successful-students). As a school we have determined that some of this funding is used best for stage teams to have a day a term to reflect on programs they have taught, look at programs for the term to come and adjust their teaching and learning as required. Over the coming weeks, each stage as well as the executive team will be engaged in a planning day.
Literacy sessions K-2
At PHPS we attempt to schedule literacy and numeracy sessions in our morning learning block. This does not look the same in each class and sometimes there are other programs running such as Library, Computers, Music or Scripture. For the most part though, the morning session has a literacy focus. Check out what some of our Kindy and Year 1 students were doing during their literacy block this week.

Supporting your child’s learning at home
The NSW school curriculum has undergone the first comprehensive reform in 30 years after an extensive curriculum review and consultation.

Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction
A big thank you to all those students who wore their national dress or a touch of orange last Wednesday to celebrate Harmony Week.
It was wonderful seeing so many students wearing their national dress. As you can see from the photos, they looked amazing and their enthusiasm provided us with the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our school’s cultural diversity.

Throughout the week, a variety of activities also took place ranging from students reflecting and writing about their cultural background to viewing picture books with a multicultural theme.
Once again, this celebration highlighted Australia’s cultural diversity and the importance of being inclusive.
