Parent Information Session – English and Mathematics
Thank you to all of the community members who were able to attend the Information Session on English and Mathematics last night. We are so pleased to have such an engaged community in partnership with the school to support student learning. With more than 70 people in attendance, we will be looking at other information sessions we can be providing – please ensure that you fill out the survey that is linked in the QR code further along in the newsletter.
Thank you to Mrs Hobbs, our Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction and Mrs Anne McLaren, our Primary Mathematics Specialist Teacher for creating the presentation and taking time away from their families to inform our community. Your contributions to PHPS are huge and we are grateful that you are so knowledgeable and open to sharing your research and skills with us.

Book Week & Book Character Parade
Welcome to Book Week!
The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) hold their Book Week every year in week 6 of Term 3. We are holding our Book Character Parade this Thursday and welcome you all to join us there!
Please see Ms Davis’ section further down in the newsletter for more details.
FIZZICS – Science Community Night
We had a wonderful time at our Big Science, Big Show night last week during National Science Week! Thank you to all of those families who were able to attend – it was such an enjoyable time and hopefully lots of fun Science learning happened.

Green and Gold Day
To support the Matilda’s in their semi-final efforts, the Penno community got amongst the fun and were encouraged to wear green and gold on Wednesday last week. What a wonderful sight! Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the Matilda’s did not qualify. We still had fun!
SPECTRA
Our SPECTRA students put on a magnificent display on Thursday, exhibiting all of their interests and understanding of the Science topic of their choice. It was wonderful to see the hard work and dedication many of the students had put into their projects. Students from Pennant Hills High School also attended and had their own stalls, sharing their knowledge and being wonderful role models for the PHPS students. Thank you to Mrs Macnaughtan for supporting the SPECTRA students all year and to Mrs McCloghry who assisted on the day.

Pennant Hills High School – Art Exhibition
One of the ways that we support the connection between our primary school and our local high school, Pennant Hills High School, is to attend events that the High School students have created. Last week, students from years 3-6 attended a midday viewing of the Pennant Hills High School Art Exhibition. What a display! Our students were astounded at the detail and effort that had gone into each and every piece, a very grounding experience. Thank you to Pennant Hills High School for hosting us and thank you to our students, the comments from PHHS staff were that our students were extremely well-behaved and respectful of the artworks.

The time has finally come to install the gabion bench seats in our native nibbles garden but we need your help!!

This Saturday 26th we need volunteers to help install some solid foundations for the bench seats to sit on and others to start constructing the wire cages… which is basically just making boxes out of wire panels. Don't worry we’ll show you how (:
IF we get time and enough volunteers we may be able to start filling the cages with the sandstone spall and the lovely decorative rocks our students have painted.
CAN WE PLEASE BORROW
If you have a compactor/tamper could we please borrow it for the day. Even if you aren't available to help with the construction it would be great if we can borrow a tamper/compactor from someone.
Please text me (Kate) ASAP on 0410 686 007 to discuss any ways you may be able to help out.
When:
This Saturday August 26th 9:30am-12:30pm
Where:

Celebrating Book Week at PHPS
Every year the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across Australia through its annual Book Week and Book of the Year awards. The aim of Book Week is to highlight the importance of reading. During this time schools, libraries, bookshops, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children’s literature. This year, the theme is “Read, Grow, Inspire”.
To celebrate this event we are having a Book Character Parade this Thursday 24 August and are asking the students to come dressed as their favourite book character. There have been discussions during library lessons to help students with ideas for their costumes and it has been wonderful hearing about the book characters students have chosen for this fun event. There are plenty of ideas on Pinterest and Google and below are some photos from last year’s parade.
Parents are invited to attend the parade which will be held on the K-2 site at 10.30 am.
We look forward to celebrating this literary event and seeing amazing book characters.

What a massive first week Teddy has had!
He met students at 3-6 on Tuesday and at K-2 on Wednesday...
He joined in with Teacher Professional Learning about maths, led by Mrs McLaren, and was trained on the new finance system by our office manager, Mrs Klimoski.
At both sites, the students used what they had been taught about ‘PAT PET PAUSE’ and were using their very best manners to check if they could pat Teddy and doing their best to not crowd him. They have been absolutely so respectful in their enthusiasm for him being here- I think he thinks he is a bit of a STAR!
If you have any questions, concerns or comments - such as: allergies or fearful of dogs or love dogs or absolutely anything else- about Teddy being at school, please contact me via the school email or call the school on 9484 1134.
Please also note that although we may be having Teddy at school, unfortunately all other dogs and animals are not allowed.

There are a few things to consider when selecting an instrument for your child. These include, size (both the instrument and your child), configuration, sound, and cost.
Whilst we understand that your child may have a favourite instrument they would like to play, we also need to be able to balance the band with a range of woodwind, brass, high range, low range and percussion. Without this balance the bands will not have an appropriate spread of sound. So please don’t be disappointed if your child's first choice is not available when we get to sending out offers, and do please encourage them to take on the instrument which has been offered. The skills of learning an instrument are often transferable to other instruments later on, so no matter what they take on now it will benefit them in their musical future.
Flute
The flute is a side-blown woodwind instrument. It is played by blowing a stream of air over the mouthpiece hole. The sound is changed by opening or closing keys that cover circular tone holes (there are typically 16 tone holes). Opening and closing the holes produces higher and lower sounds. The direction and intensity of the airstream also affects the pitch, quality, and volume of the sound produced.
Whilst the flute itself is a small instrument there are a couple of things which need to be taken into consideration when thinking about choosing this instrument. Firstly, because of the way this instrument is played it requires a great deal of air to play well (almost as much as some of the largest brass instruments), so students who have a large lung capacity may be well suited. Also because of the way the instrument is held, out to the side, it may not be suited to children who have relatively short arms. However, in the early stages of learning this can be alleviated by using something called a recurved head joint, which makes the flute keys easier to reach for young children.
The band program has flutes for hire, or hire-to-buy, or a new reputable brand student model flute to purchase will cost around $700-1000.
Link to the rosters is here:
http://www.phpspandc.org.au/band/band-roster/
Instruction on how to fill in the new Framedate roster is also on that page. Use a green tick for yes, and an orange tick to be a backup. (Don't use the red X as it just confuses people).
If unable to edit your line of helping dates in the framadate roaster link please just create a new entry with a slightly different name. ie YourName, then YourName-2, YourName-3 etc, to add a new line for new helping dates.
