End of 2023 School Year and 2024 Term 1 Dates
All students finish school for 2023 on Friday 15 December. I have very much enjoyed spending the last 4 weeks of the school year with the students from PHPS.
Term 1 2024 resumes for students in Years 1-6 on Thursday 1 February 2024.
Kindergarten students have their Best Start appointments on either Thursday 1 February, Friday 2 February or Monday 5 February. The first school day for Kindergarten in 2024 is Tuesday 6 February.
Parent/ Carer Survey
At the time of writing, 94 families have responded to the Parent/ Carer Survey. Thank you to those families who have found time in what is a busy season to give some feedback on areas of strength and development for PHPS. If you have not yet completed the survey, I would greatly appreciate 5 minutes of your time to add to the data already collected. I will publish a summary of survey results early next year.

Year 6 Mini-Fete
Although it was a hot day last Friday, Year 6 students did an outstanding job operating the Mini Fete. All students I spoke with were having a wonderful time. Thank you to the Stage 3 teachers for assisting students with this great event.
Celebration of Learning
Yesterday we acknowledged and celebrated a great year of learning at PHPS. Thank you to Mr Warren for allowing us to hold our ceremonies in the hall at Pennant Hills High School. Thank you to Mrs Griffith for her wonderful organisation of both assemblies. When an event runs like clockwork it is usually due to an immense amount of planning behind the scenes. Thank you also to Mrs Schmidt, Mrs Krivohlavy and Mrs Stevens for their assistance with the set up of the hall. The 2023 student leaders did a wonderful job of running both ceremonies.
Congratulations to all students. Although I have only seen the last few weeks of the school year at PHPS, I am extremely impressed by the kind, caring and diligent nature of our students.
Congratulations to the 2024 School Leadership Team. Mrs Wasson and I enjoyed having lunch with them after the 3-6 Celebration of Learning concluded.

Year 6 Farewell
Last night’s Year 6 Farewell was a wonderful evening. Many thanks to the parents who assisted with the decorations and the serving of food. The hall and outside area looked fantastic, and the theme of ‘Sunset Paradise’ was evident all around. Special thanks to the Year 6 teachers for their coordination of the event and to Arnold for the fabulous dancing. I hope that all students had a fun filled and memorable night.
I look forward to many more celebrations this week…Movie Day today, class parties throughout the week and Year 6 Graduation and Clap Out on Friday.
This is the last Newsletter for 2023. I hope that all families have a safe and happy holiday. I look forward to seeing the smiling faces of students when they return in 2024.

Staff Vs Student Netball
Last week we held a Staff versus Student Netball game with our Year 6 netballers! It was a hard competition and the Year 6 students looked at beating us, but we came through in the end with a win! Well done Year 6 for playing against us and thank you to all of the students on 3-6 for cheering both teams on! Well done to the winning team, consisting of Mrs Wright, Miss Nelson, Miss Dy, Mrs Cumming, Mrs Griffith, Miss Griggs, Mrs Buchberger and I. Thank you to our umpire, Ms Schmidt.

Gold Award Recipients
Part of our new awards system, the highest award is the Gold Award. At last week’s assembly, we had several Gold Award winners. Congratulations on working so hard, it has paid off!
Year 6 Mini Fete
It was amazing to see all of the planning and preparation that our Year 6 students had put in to their Mini-Fete stalls finally pay off. A very successful day on Friday, despite the heat and needing to finish early. Thank you Year 6 for a wonderful day and to the Year 6 teachers for coordinating it all and ensuring success.
Alex was the winner of the raffle with a giant Pikachu! Congratulations Alex!

Year 6 Farewell
Last night was a very magical night for our 2023 Year 6 cohort as they danced the night away with sunset vibes. The students were dressed for the occasion and ready to boogy! Thank you to Arnold for running the dances the whole night, there was no doubt the students had a wonderful time. Thank you to the staff who supervised and cleaned up and Jimmy’s Smash Burgers for dinner. A HUGE thank you to the amazing group of parent volunteers who created such an amazing space for the students, spent the weekend in the heat setting up and then had it all down by this morning. Amazing effort! We hope you enjoyed dancing with your children to the Nutbush at the end.

Celebration of Learning Assemblies
Two successful celebration of Learning Assemblies also occurred yesterday. Well done to all of the students who were just beautifully behaved! Congratulations to all of our wonderful and deserving award recipients! Thank you to Mrs Griffith for her organisation of the assemblies, to Mrs Krivohlavy and Mrs Schmidt for helping to coordinate and to all of the community members who joined us to acknowledge the commitment to learning, citizenship and critical and creative thinking that occurs in our school.
P&C Music Night
We had a wonderful turn out for our Christmas Music Night, organised by our dedicated P&C. The students really shone in their performances from the 3 bands and 2 strings groups as well as solo performances and the choirs. Thank you to all involved, the teachers who attended and the community for coming out to support at this busy time of year!

Thank you from the Children’s Hospitals!
They were so delighted by all of your fabulous donations – many very happy kids this Christmas thanks to you all!
Congratulations
Congratulations to Clara D (4B), who, along with her teammates, won the Division 4 Junior Competition for Term 4, 2023 at North West Tennis Club over the weekend.
Happy holidays!
Thank you to our amazing Penno community for another awesome year. Although at this time of year, teachers and students are weary, the appreciation we have for our parents and community members and all that they have done for us throughout the year is unwavering.
We are so proud of all of our students and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and hope that you get to spend lots of quality time together.
Kind Regards
Kate Wasson

It is time to celebrate SPECTRA Science Learning Success!
The SPECTRA Science program is run by the Australian Science Teachers’ Association.
To qualify for an award, a student must complete up to 8 challenging learning tasks within a field of science. The results of their projects are then uploaded to Google Classroom for assessment and feedback.
It has been such a thrill to see how engaged students have been with the program. Students have been encouraged to ask questions, seek answers, test theories and challenge their thinking.
Most of all, students have been inspired to continue growing a love of learning as a reward in and of itself!
Congratulations to the following 26 Stage 3 students who completed the SPECTRA program this year and thank you for sharing your learning successes with us:

Are You Interested in Joining The Choir in 2024??
We need students to join the choir in 2024. The choirs rehearse in the morning before school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We participate in school events and major state music festivals such as the Primary Proms, Festival of Choral Music and of course, the Schools Spectacular.
To join the choir, I will have to listen to you sing. You will need to sing the first verse of Advance Australia Fair and Happy Birthday to me. (Easy!!!). I will arrange a time for this early in 2024.
Please fill out this form to indicate your interest in joining choir in 2024. If you filled out the form last year, you don’t need to fill it out again. This form is open for students currently in years 3-5. Students who are currently in choir DO NOT need to fill out this form.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Mrs McLaren
Stage 3 Relieving Assistant Principal
As the year comes to an end, the Gardens and Grounds committee would like to express our sincerest thanks to all the volunteers who’ve donated their most precious resource to our gardening efforts - their time!!!
We have used that time to maintain existing garden spaces and also to finish building the new Native Nibbles Garden at K-2. The installation of beautiful timber tops on our gabion bench seats brings the year to a close in a wonderful way - through collaboration as a community we built a native garden that will give pleasure to many future generations of PHPS students, parents and teachers.
As per the Greek proverb “A society grows great when old men (and women) plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit”. I can only assume that our PHPS society will continue to grow in greatness, such is the team effort that has led to the Native Nibbles Garden.
HUGE thanks to Phil and Bernie from Hornsby Men’s Shed for their help. When no “timbersmiths” could be found in the PHPS community to build tops for our gabion seats, these kind gentlemen stepped in to do the job and put the finishing touches on our gabion bench seats and thus the garden as a whole. Thanks also to Forestry Corporation via Liz for providing the salvaged timber they used.
The experience of working with the Hornsby Men’s Shed has sparked our imaginations about other opportunities for working with people from outside the immediate PHPS community. So stay tuned next year for more information about those plans.
In the meantime, may your garden stay hydrated and healthy over the hot summer months. Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and New Year.

We urge all families over the summer holidays to clean out your wardrobes and put aside any second-hand school uniforms which you may wish to donate to the uniform shop. We will be collecting these in the first few weeks of Term 1, 2024!
