I hope that all families had an enjoyable extended weekend. It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of Term 1 and that we are already in April!
Please be aware that from Term 2 onwards we are going to trial distribution of the Newsletter in a fortnightly format instead of weekly. We are aiming to further streamline communications and acknowledge that a weekly newsletter involves some instances of repeated information. We know that families are busy and having to read the newsletter every second week instead of each week will hopefully ease some of the work in keeping up to date with school happenings.
In Term 2 the Newsletter will be distributed on:
Week 2 – 7 May
Week 4 – 21 May
Week 6 – 4 June
Week 8 – 18 June
Week 10 – 2 July
A message from the Pennant Hills Public School P&C President, Gareth Watkins…
‘I’d like to give a brief word of introduction and thanks as the incoming president. My name is Gareth and I’m very thankful to Luke Whenman as outgoing president for 3 incredible years of commitment and service. We’re very happy that Luke won’t be leaving the scene but rather continuing to serve as Vice-President ensuring his organisational knowledge remains to help us all. I’d also like to thank the rest of the executive committee who continue to serve alongside me.
Who am I and why have I accepted the role as president? I must confess that for the first few years of my connection to Pennant Hills Public School I was mostly invisible. I now have an 8 year old son in year 3 and a 4 year old daughter going into Kindy next year, so this means I joined the school community in the middle of the Covid disruption. I imagine there are a number of people in a similar situation to me who missed the natural welcome events and pathways into involvement as a parent at the school. It was a somewhat serendipitous encounter with the outgoing president Luke, as he was trick-or-treating with his kids, who live a few streets away from me in Pennant Hills, that brought about my connection to the P&C. Soon after, being impressed by Luke’s warmth and activity, I simply asked how I could be involved as I’m usually a natural helper and team player. Luke explained that at the executive level is where help is most often thin on the ground. I volunteered to be Secretary during 2023, and now here I am stepping in to the President role, as Luke finishes the maximum 3 year consecutive terms our constitution allows.
I accepted the nomination for President because;
: I wanted to embody to others that I’m not an expert, I haven’t been involved very long, but I can bring a willing attitude, and good communities thrive on people just having a go ? P&C doesn’t require any secret handshakes to join!
: In my daily work as a local real estate agent I constantly meet young families looking to move into the area. One of the most common questions people ask me is “What is the local primary school like?” as they compare it with others in the area. I find it a privilege to be able to look people in the eye and describe PHPS as a wonderful school they could be proud to call home. If there’s any way I can continue to help PHPS excel I want to do that.
: I come from a family of teachers, so I somewhat understand the challenges teachers face on a daily basis to educate our children, which is one of the highest callings one could undertake. I’d love to play a role in the P&C continuing to make our school a place where our kids, teachers, parents and local community members thrive together.
2024 looks set to be a wonderful year as we mark 99 years of school history and prepare for our centenary celebrations in 2025! I look forward to seeing you around the school. Say hi and get involved!’
The school is extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated and hard-working P&C. The relationship between the P&C and staff is mutually respectful and always focussed on providing the best for our students. Please feel free to come along to any P&C meeting…everyone is welcome!
Warm Regards

Over the next two week all students will have their final library lesson for the term. Please remember to bring your library bags to borrow books for the holidays. Local libraries are a great option to encourage students to continue reading throughout the holidays and a nice free outing.
Happy Reading!
Wednesday Afternoon Family Borrowing Time
Join us on a Wednesday afternoon 3:15-3:45pm for Family Borrowing Time.
Due to our change in timetable and the students attending library lessons once a fortnight I am going to trial having the library open for half an hour on a Wednesday afternoon after school.
All students must be accompanied by an adult.
Please drop in and spend some quality time as a family to return any books and borrow some new ones.
Looking forward to seeing you on a Wednesday K-6.

Our Drama unit this term is called “Puppets and Play”. Students in years 1-6 are learning about different types of puppets and basic techniques in puppetry.
This week, all students in years 1 – 6 are asked to bring in a small soft toy (not a puppet) to use during their Drama lesson this week.
During the holidays, it would be fantastic if students could make their own puppet and bring it in. Next term, students will also be able to bring in their own puppets.
So, this week and next, remember to bring in a small soft toy.
