Trialling a different approach to communicating with Parent/ Carers about student progress.
The feedback we received in the Parent/ Carer Survey from Term 4 last year saw many respondents indicate that they would like more opportunities for formal discussion with their child’s teacher and more regular updates on student progress throughout the school year.
Traditionally Pennant Hills Public School has held a Meet the Teacher Evening early in Term 1 where parents gather as a group and listen to the teacher give general information about school matters and class routines. Parents are then invited to an individual Parent / Teacher Interview towards the end of Term 1. Ongoing meetings with class teachers could be arranged but parents needed to initiate contact and generally parents have indicated that they do not do this unless they have concerns.
In response to feedback received, the following structure will be trialled in 2024.

*You are also welcome to contact the school at anytime to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher should you want an update on their progress or have a concern. |
Learning Goal Meetings - We are initiating a more personalised and individual approach to Meet the Teacher meetings this year. You will have the opportunity to book a meeting time with your child’s class teacher. These meetings (can be in person or via Zoom) will be scheduled in Weeks 5 or 6 of this term and will provide the opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teacher and to discuss student interests and strengths, areas for development and academic / social areas to focus on in Semester One. This meeting will also give you the opportunity to ask your child’s teacher any questions regarding the class.
Please note that these individual Learning Goal Meetings are replacing the traditional Meet the Teacher evenings for Years 1-6.
More information will come home in the coming weeks about how to book an opportunity to meet with and engage in a Learning Goal Meeting with your child’s teacher.
P&C Welcome Back BBQ
It was lovely chatting with families at the P&C Welcome Back BBQ on Friday afternoon. A big thank you to the P&C for providing this wonderful event for our school community. Our school is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic P&C!

P&C Welcome BBQ
Friday evening saw the first of our community events for the year, and what a way to kick things off! Thank you to our amazing P&C for organising the Welcome BBQ, with sausages galore, local AFL, Football (soccer) and netball clubs represented and many games played. It was a wonderful afternoon and so lovely to see so many families in attendance!

NAPLAN
In 2024, NAPLAN will be held from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March.
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 who are enrolled at a school are expected to participate in four NAPLAN tests:
- writing
- reading
- conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
- numeracy.
All schools in NSW undertake NAPLAN online. However, Year 3 students do the writing test on paper. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the format of the tests before the NAPLAN test window.
Supporting your child
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.
It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.
The best approach for preparing your child for NAPLAN is to encourage your child to do the best they can on the day.
Excessive preparation or the use of coaching providers is not recommended.
Public demonstration site
The public demonstration site is available for students, teachers and parents to familiarise themselves with the types of questions, tools and functions available for the NAPLAN tests. It includes demonstration tests for each NAPLAN year level, test domain and alternative tests for students with disability.
Disability adjustments
Adjustments are available for students with disability. The adjustments should reflect the normal support a student receives in classroom assessments.
Contact your child’s school to discuss possible adjustments and to sign a parent/carer consent form.
Withdrawals and exemptions
You can withdraw your child from NAPLAN tests.
Your child may be exempt from NAPLAN tests if they have:
- significant disabilities that severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests or
- a language background other than English and have recently arrived in Australia (less than a year before the tests).
Contact your child’s school for further information about withdrawals and exemptions and to sign a parent/carer consent form.
Kind Regards

Second-hand Uniform Stall
A big thank you to the school community for coming out to the P&C welcome back BBQ last Friday, especially those who generously donated second-hand uniforms and those who took the opportunity to look through our $5 second-hand uniform buckets. We raised a total of $876, what a tremendous effort by everyone. The money raised by the P&C Uniform Shop will go back to supporting the school, so you have all done a great job! Also, a big thank you to those wonderful volunteers Naing T, Jeane W, Bec D, Tracy Y, Angelene C & Ji L. The stall couldn’t have taken place without you and I’m very grateful for your help!
All families who donated or purchased items were eligible to enter our raffle give-away. The raffle draw took place on Monday 12 February and our lovely Principal and office staff helped draw out the lucky winners!

The shirts will be delivered to your child’s classroom as soon as they arrive. We apologise for any inconveniences.
Second-hand Uniforms
We continue to accept second-hand donations throughout the year.
