Cross Country
Despite ongoing rain, last week we were finally able to hold our school Cross Country Carnival. Although the format for the day was changed slightly and we moved the event to the 3-6 site the day was a great success and students appeared to have very much enjoyed participating and cheering on their friends. Thank you to Mrs Cummings for her wonderful organisation. This Thursday 40 students from our school are competing at the Zone Cross Country Carnival at Fagan Park. Mrs Cummings has organised this event for the Beecroft zone. A very big organisational feat! Thank you to Mrs Cummings and PHPS staff attending the carnival this Thursday.
K-2 Carpark
It would be greatly appreciated if parents did not use the K-2 carpark after 7:30am Monday to Friday. Many staff arrive at school around this time and find parking difficult due to parents using the carpark when dropping their child off at BASC. Please use street parking if dropping your child at BASC after 7:30am. Thank you for your cooperation.
P&C Solar Project Update
Over recent times the P&C have been fundraising with the aim of successfully applying for a Department of Education grant to assist with the installation of solar panels at our school. The school and P&C jointly applied for a grant in this area and unfortunately, we were not successful. Please be aware that the P&C have kept funds raised aside and are exploring other options for solar or sustainability ideas so that the money raised can be used for a purpose as close as possible to the original goal. We will keep you updated on progress in relation to this initiative. To all our amazing families who assisted with this fundraising, thank you for your understanding and patience.
Attendance Matters

Rugby K-6
Our K-6 rugby program started on Friday and it was awesome! The students were so excited to try this new sport and it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces as they played games with rugby balls and learnt how to throw and catch. Feedback from our teachers and the students was all very positive, thank you to NSW Rugby for supporting our students during this 6 week program.

Mother's Day Breakfast
We had a fabulous turn out at our Mother’s Day Breakfast. Thank you to all of the families who brought their special people along to share breakfast with. A big thank you to Mrs McLoghry and Mrs Gardener for all of their organisation of the event and to all of the staff who assisted with the set up the afternoon before and the morning of the breakfast. We hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Mother's Day Stall
Our students had the opportunity to purchase a Mother’s Day gift from the Mother’s
Day stall. Thank you to Mrs Pride for going above and beyond for our students to make sure they were able to pick some quality gifts for their mum's and special people.

Boccia
Our Boccia team attended the NSW School Sport competition last week as defending champions. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in our attempts to secure our championship for the second year, however our skill development since last year was clearly observed and it was a great day out at Thornleigh brickpit. Thank you Mrs Schmidt and Mrs Wright for attending and supervising the students.
FOIM
Yesterday, 7 of our budding strings musicians attended the Festival of Instrumental Music rehearsal at Meadowbank. They played beautifully and were a great representation of students at Pennant Hills Public School. Thank you to our parent volunteer, Mrs Lee, for attending with us.

Hatching Chicks – Kindergarten
Welcome to our fluffy friends in Kindergarten! The students have thoroughly enjoyed watching the chicks hatch and grow – a great addition to their Science program of Living Things.
Return and Earn App
We have been successful in our application to feature on the Return and Earn app! If you are an eager Return and Earn-er or if you would like to start collecting, we would love if you considered donating your Return and Earn digital funds to Pennant Hills Public School! We will use these valuable funds on resources to directly support the students.
Kind Regards

National Simultaneous Story Time – Wednesday 22 May 12pm
All classes are encouraged to join in.
The National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) book for 2024 is Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker (Scholastic, 2023).
Bowerbird Blues stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for (you guessed it) BLUE! It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.

BOCCIA 2024
Last Friday, 10th May, PHPS sent a small representative team of students to the annual Boccia Competition at Thornleigh Brickpit, for a round robin tournament against 10 other primary schools from Northwest Sydney.
What is Boccia?
- Boccia (pronounced 'Bot-cha') is a Paralympic sport introduced in 1984
- It has no Olympic counterpart
- Athletes throw, kick or use a ramp to propel a ball onto the court with the aim of getting closest to a 'jack' ball
- It is played indoors on a court similar in size to a badminton court
- The aim of this tournament is to provide opportunities for students with disability to participate in sport, as the game is adapted to ensure the competition is inclusive of all
It was a pleasure to take our Boccia team to the tournament. All the students tried really hard and put in some major effort to help each other in every game. They did brilliantly whilst having a whole lot of fun!
This is our awesome 2024 Boccia team! We are so proud of them
The K-6 Cross Country was held on Monday 13th May 2023 on the 3-6 site. Over the weekend, the amount of water significantly affected sections of the track that had previously held up well. After careful consideration, a late decision was made to change to our back up plan, which required moving the event to the 3-6 site and scaling the event back to competitive events only. Even the alterations, and intermittent rain, couldn’t dampen the excitement and enthusiasm of our racers. Every child tried their best, and it was such a pleasure to see many happy and satisfied faces at the completion of each event (even though some were exhausted!) A big THANKS to all parents, family members and people from the community who came along to support the event. It was nice seeing the encouragement shown to all students as they completed each lap of the course.
Congratulations must also go to the following students who won their events.
The students that came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th were presented their ribbons in the next assembly.
The Zone Cross Country Championships is being held on Thursday 23rd May at Fagan Park, where Pennant Hills Public School are proud to be hosting the event. Please return notes and payment as soon as possible.
All the students participating in the cross country received an ice block handed out by the amazing parents who volunteered their time on the day. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time- you were amazing! We also had fantastic parent volunteers helping both on K-2 and 3-6 hand out their sausage sizzle lunch order. Thank you to the amazing P and C and our canteen coordinator Heather.
It was a fantastic day for all the students and teachers and on behalf of the cross country committee would like to thank all the students for their amazing behaviour on the day, the P and C for their outstanding effort and the staff who ensured that all the students were safe and encouraged.

Cross Country Coordinator
MOTHER'S DAY - HOW WE CELEBRATED
Thank you to all who joined us for our Mother's Day celebrations. Please enjoy some photos of our special event.

Please enjoy seeing what the creative students of 6I completed for Mother's Day!

Everyone in a NSW government school – students, teachers and community members – is expected to treat others fairly and behave in a non-racist way so that every student is able to feel a sense of belonging and have a positive learning experience at school.
In spite of this, school is the place where children are most likely to experience racism.
- Almost two thirds, and (60%) of students say they have witnessed racism in school
- Around a third (33%) of state-school students have experienced racism from their peers
The most common forms of interpersonal racism in school include students being told they don’t belong, called names, left out, spat on, pushed or hit. Interpersonal racism can also happen online.
If you are able to, please:
- Have conversations about racism with your children often, not just when it's in the news
- Discuss social media, books or watch shows together that deal with racism or stereotypes
- Keep the conversation going and let children know it OK to ask questions
- Encourage children to understand the lived experience of ethnically minoritised groups better
- We aren’t all the same and the world would be a very boring place if we were
- We can learn from people with different backgrounds and cultures to us
- Dispel stereotypes about people from other countries
- Call out racism and discrimination whenever you see it
- Any form of racism is distressing and can have a significant impact on their mental health
To help combat racism at school, we have a teacher who is a nominated as the Anti Racism Contact Officer- an ARCO. At our school, this teacher is Ms Melissa Schmidt, the Learning and Support Teacher.
The ARCO plays an important role in assisting and working collaboratively with the principal to implement the Department’s Anti Racism Policy.
With your support, we do the very best we can to ensure culturally inclusive, cohesive, safe and engaging learning experiences for all our students.
If at any time you find that you have a concern about racism in our school, you are encouraged to come to the school and talk with a member of staff so that your concern can be resolved. In the case of complaints relating to racism in schools, you can also contact the school Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO) on telephone 9484 1134 or via email pennanthil-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Our canteen is staffed, however we rely on volunteers for over the counter sales, particularly at the K-2 site.
For over the counter sales at Lunchtime we are open:
K-2: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. (2 helpers needed).
3-6: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Recess on Fridays.
We are really struggling to get helpers for K-2, and it is always the same people stepping in. We need a bigger pool of volunteers to be able to keep it running.
If you are available from 1-1.40pm on any of these days please consider coming to help. It’s a fun and easy way to get involved in your child’s school life and they just love you being there. Please contact Claire Phillips on 0403 810 391.
Parents and Grandparents of students do not need a “Working With Children Check” to help at the canteen.
I would like to send a huge THANK YOU to the following people for their wonderful help with the Cross Country Sausage Sizzle:
Paul, Ji, Kieran and our awesome GA Mark, on the BBQ,
Claire S, Ange, Melina, Peta, Bec D, Nicola and Claire P in the canteen.
Thank you also to the people who very kindly offered to help but weren’t needed due to the changes in the running of the day, and to everyone who brought in some yummy food for the children to purchase.
You all helped to make it a great day! I’m very sorry if I have left anyone out.
