Welcome back!
A warm welcome back to term 3. This term promises to be another exciting term full of wonderful learning opportunities and experiences for the students. Yesterday staff participated in Professional Learning with colleagues from West Pennant Hills Public School. The day was a combination of looking at and unpacking the new Science & Technology syllabus and outdoor learning opportunities within our school and surrounding areas. It was a great day of development for the staff and I am certainly looking forward to seeing leaning opportunities take place out of the classroom and utilising the magnificent grounds within Pennant Hills Public School.
During the holidays, the K-2 asphalt area was replaced and it looks great. As a result of this work the gutters and drainage have improved for this area which should assist with the upkeep of the sandpits. In a few weeks, the basketball posts will be reinstalled and in approximately six weeks the ground markings will be painted. Most of the markings will be the same, however, the may be some small changes in this area. I can assure you that as much as possible it will reflect what was previously there. Thank you to BASC and the community for their understanding during this work.
The roofing and guttering is nearly complete across the two sites with a few small alterations to be made. These adjustments will not affect the running of the school or the student’s learning.
Calendars/Website
In next week’s newsletter you will receive the term calendar with all the school events for this term. In this calendar there will also be the events arranged by the P&C this term for your convenience.
By next week the school’s website will have all the events from both the school and P&C on the website calendar. I encourage you to use this calendar for up-to-date information. The calendar is also interactive and we are improving its use by including permission notes etc relating to activities to make it more informative and easier for parents. Please take the time to look at the website as it is improving every week with the information it contains. You will also be able to see information about some of the learning taking place across the school. The school website can be accessed at https://pennanthil-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/
Staff Planning Days
Over the next two weeks all staff will be collaborating with their grade colleagues to plan learning and assessment opportunities for the students under their care. Much is expected these days of the teaching staff and this time allows them to create a variety of learning opportunities for the students. When the teachers are off class for the day they will plan the day’s learning for the students so that the casual on the class continues the teachers program to ensure continuity of learning. If you have any questions please contact one of the school’s Assistant Principals to discuss.
Stevens Street – Pedestrian Refuge Project Upgrade
During the holidays the Council has upgraded the pedestrian refuge on Stevens Street near Westwood Street to meet Australian Guidelines. This upgrade was undertaken due to many complaints due to the confusion of drivers and pedestrians at this location as to who had right of way. The new refuge is at least two metres wide to ensure safety of everyone when crossing the road. It is important to note here that vehicles will continue to have right of way at all times at this location. I have included a flyer in this newsletter from the Department of Education titled ‘Walking to school safely’ for your benefit. Please ensure that you discuss with your children appropriate strategies to navigate crossing any road.
Changes to The Newsletter
The school has been working in the background to update the presentation and delivery of the school’s weekly newsletter. Many thanks to Mrs Paisley in the office for all her work in this area. Over the next five weeks you will receive the newsletter as you have currently been receiving it and you will also receive via email a link to the new website which will ‘house’ our newsletters in the future. The new format allows you to quickly navigate to specific sections of the newsletter aimed at making it more useful to families.
There is an App available called ‘SZapp’ which can be downloaded onto your Android or iPhone. The link below details all the information you need regarding the set up and use of the App. https://pennanthillsps.schoolzineplus.com/szapp
While the App is available as a convenience to you it is not compulsory to download it; the newsletter will automatically be sent to your email address by default. If you do not receive an emailed newsletter from Schoolzine, please email the school office detailing your full name and preferred email address so that you can be added to the database.
To confirm, you will receive the current newsletter format through eNews as well as the new Schoolzine format via email until week 5. From week 6 the eNews format will be phased out and the Schoolzine format will be the only newsletter you will receive.
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Welcome back
Welcome back to the second half of the school year. I have popped my head into most classes today and everyone seems relaxed and happy to be back. A busy term ahead with Athletics Carnivals, Education Week with open classrooms and the Walkathon, many musical and dance performances, Science Week and Maker Night, Book Week with the Great Book Swap – all within the first 5 weeks! This doesn’t include our day-to-day marvellous teaching and learning. We hope you all had a relaxing break and got to spend some time with your families.
Maker Night
We are pleased to announce that we have made the quota to secure Maker Night this year. Maker night will be held during Science week and will be a wonderful opportunity for families to work with their children to build a STEM robot. This year we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing. We are focusing on big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. This will help forge our future paths in the areas of space operations, space science, Earth observations, positioning systems and communications.
When: Wednesday 14 August (Week 4)
Time: 5pm-7pm. Please feel free to come anytime within this timeframe.
We look forward to seeing you on the night!
Earn and Learn
Thank you to all of our families who collected Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers for our school. We collected over
45 000 stickers! A fabulous effort! A special and very large thank you to Julie A, Christine K our parent helpers, Donna and Chris in the office for a huge effort in counting and collating all of the stickers.
With the points we accumulated we have ordered 5 Dash robots, 5 Edison robots and some class sets of magnetic whiteboards. All of these items will be of direct benefit to our students.

Day 1 for Term 3 for staff was Monday 22 July. On this Staff Development Day, we joined forces with West Pennant Hills Public School and hosted a whole day professional learning workshop. We had curriculum advisors from Macquarie Park work closely with us to develop inquiry focused Science units of work and then teachers from Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre took us outdoors into the wonderful grounds we have here at Pennant Hills Public School and demonstrated some of the ways we could be using our spaces for outdoor learning. The feedback I have received so far has been positive and the teachers are excited to use their new knowledge with their students.

Festival of Instrumental Music
Our wonderful strings group is performing at the Festival of Instrumental Music on Monday 29 July at the Sydney Opera House – what a feat! I am excited to be joining the group for the day and evening performance where Mr Pinchbeck will be accompanying me. Best of luck strings group!
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

The Canteen Menu Is Undergoing Some Changes
Some of these changes are in preparation of submitting the menu for approval by the Healthy Kids Association. Some are to make things easier for our wonderful volunteers, especially our new ones. Some are because of lack of volunteers, and others are to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use. Please bear with us while we work to get it right.
Pizza Muffins have replaced Pizza Slices and Pizza Wraps, and are available any day.
There is now homemade Chilli (beef and vegetarian), that comes with a tortilla.
Falafels have joined our menu items, and are available in a wrap, and as an addition to a salad box.
Pineapple is now an option for Toasties. (Ham, cheese and pineapple is yum!)
Fruit and Jelly cups have been removed, as they do not meet the new criteria.
Meal Deals have also been removed to streamline the labelling and bagging process.
PSSA Lunches
Please remember to click on the PSSA alert at the top of the screen when ordering if your stage 3 child does PSSA sport.

If you are able to help at all with the sausage sizzle or serving snacks, please let me know.

Second Hand Uniforms
Second hand winter stock in larger sizes is very low so if you have any uniforms in good condition that you no longer require, please consider donating them to the Second Hand Clothing Pool at the Uniform Shop.
Lost Property
Please ensure that you label all uniform items, particularly hats and jackets, to ensure that if your child misplaces them any lost items can be returned to you. If your child has inadvertently brought home a hat or jacket that does not belong to them, kindly return it to the school office.
Winter Stock
The Uniform Shop has navy gloves, polar fleece jackets and track pants for sale that can be worn during the colder months.
Dr Shoe
This term Dr Shoe will be attending the Uniform Shop on Thursday 29 August from 3 – 3:45pm. 15% of all sales are donated to the P&C. Alternatively Dr Shoe can be contacted direct on 0414 912 838 to arrange a home fitting.
New Price List Term 3
There have been multiple new uniform items added to our price list in recent years. As such the combined price list and order form has now been redesigned for an improved layout in order to fit the new uniform items, including the new girls’ summer shorts and shirts which are being introduced in Term 4 2019. Due to an increase in costs from some suppliers, there have also been several price changes that will be effective from Term 3 2019.
The new updated price list will be available on the school website at the beginning of next term.
Ordering Uniforms
Uniforms can be ordered by attending the Uniform Shop during opening hours, or alternatively an order form can be completed and together with payment of cash, cheque or card details handed in at either office. Orders will be filled and then delivered to the children’s classes. A combined pricelist and order form can be downloaded from the school website by following the links to Our School and What We Offer. Uniforms can also be ordered online through Flexischools, however prices will include the Flexischools’ surcharge.
Please note that uniform orders cannot be paid via the school online payment service.
