Education Week
Yesterday was a fantastic day at Pennant Hills Public School to celebrate Education Week this year. The Walk-A-Thon was an outstanding success with all students thoroughly enjoying themselves. A great event organised by Mrs Reid and Mrs Kulatunga from the P&C, who were well supported by other parents and staff from our supportive and caring community.
The afternoon/early evening saw all classrooms open for parents to see for themselves the wonderful work taking place in the classrooms. These learning opportunities are possible due to the community as a whole. We have supportive parents, interested and engaged learners and caring staff who put countless hours in to their preparation for the learning that takes place in their classroom.
Thank you to the many parents who took time to visit the Library and donate a book. This greatly assists the students in having up-to-date and interesting literature to read.
Thank you to every single person involved for such a great day.
Athletics Carnival
Last week finally saw some great weather to hold the Track and Field Events for the school’s Athletics Carnival. A huge congratulations to Mrs Castro Gonzalez (nee O’Toole) who organsied such a wonderful set of events. The most pleasing aspect of the carnival was the tremendous support and encouragement provided by the students towards their peers and fellow competitors. It was absolutely amazing to see competitors supporting each other’s’ endeavours and congratulating the winners despite missing out themselves. AMAZING!
Thank you to the P&C for their commitment to all school activities. The Canteen ran on the day and was very popular with the students. Thank you to our Canteen Manager, Heather, and the Canteen Committee for all their efforts. Thanks must also go to Mr Passe de Silva, Mr Wilkins and Mr Whalan for cooking the BBQ for lunch. Their time is certainly appreciated.
Congratulations to those students who competed and did their best. This is what the day is all about. Next week is the Zone Athletics Carnival where students in most events will represent our school at the Beecroft Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival. Good luck to all those competitors.
Student Achievement
Last week Lily (Yr 5) competed in the School Sports Australia National Games for Diving. These national titles were held in Melbourne. A very humble Lily came 5th in the competition. What an amazing achievement! To reach the Nationals Lily had to compete against students at a Regional and State level in order to qualify. What a star!
P&C & Cyber Safety
Tonight Constable Lucca from Ryde Local Area Command will be talking to parents about Cyber Safety. This talk will begin at 7pm, with the P&C meeting beginning straight after. Everyone is welcome to attend tonight. We will be meeting in the hall on the K-2 site. Constable Lucca’s talk is a great way to gain information to support your children to be safe when using technology.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Maker night will be held during Science week next week and will be a wonderful opportunity for families to work with their children to build a STEM robot. This year we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing. We are focusing on big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. This will help forge our future paths in the areas of space operations, space science, Earth observations, positioning systems and communications. We look forward to seeing you on the night! We have over 100 families attending, so if you would like to volunteer some of your time to assist, we would be very grateful.
When: Wednesday 14th August (Week 4)
Time: 5pm-7pm. Please feel free to come anytime within this timeframe.
If you would like to volunteer as a parent helper, please contact me.
Arts Alive Choral Festival
Last night was the first performance of the Arts Alive Choral festival in the Town Hall. Seven of our very talented students participated as part of the Arts Alive Combined Schools Choir. They sang as part of the massed choir and sang in a special item on their own. Well done to Alannah G, Freya C, Zach M, Chloe K, Maya K, Emma Y and Sophie M. A huge congratulations to Alannah who sang a solo in “Shooting Star”. Well done to all of our students. These students will perform again on Wednesday night and our school choir will be part of the massed choir singing in the Opera House.

Library Book Donations
A huge thank you to all those families who visited the library yesterday and donated a book. It was just wonderful seeing so many families. Overall, 216 books were donated.
We are now busily organising the bookplates so that the students can be acknowledged for their donation. Once this is completed they will then be able to borrow their donated book.
Your support for the library is very much appreciated.
Book Club - Issue 5
A reminder that the closing date for Issue 5 online orders is tomorrow Wednesday 7 August. If you wish to place an order from the Book Club catalogue you will need to go the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website page, register your details if you haven’t already done so and then pay by credit card. Please note that this year there is just one school account “Pennant Hills Public School” where all the K-6 classes are listed.
How do I order?
- Go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website to register your details. You will need to enter your name, email address and a password. Click on “Add new child” and using the drop down menu locate our school and your child’s class. If you have children on both sites you may decide to register and place your entire order just with one child to save time.
- Enter your child’s first name and their surname initial. Please note that Scholastic does not share student details with third parties or use this information for marketing purposes. This information is for distribution for when the order arrives at the school.
- Click on “ORDER“and enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue and follow the prompts to make payment by credit card.
- All orders are then processed after the closing date and delivered to the school to be distributed.
Please note there is no need to return a paper order form or payment receipts to the school.
“The Great Book Swap”
To celebrate this year’s Book Week theme “Reading is my secret power”, our school is supporting the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) by holding a “Great Book Swap” during Book Week on Tuesday 20 August.
The Great Book Swap is indeed a fantastic way to celebrate reading and raise much needed funds for remote Indigenous communities. This year the ILF aims to gift another 35,000 new, high quality books to over 280 remote communities. As the author, Andy Griffiths, who is also a lifetime ambassador for the ILF states:
“The Great Book Swap is a win-win. Not only does it help raise money to improve literacy levels in remote communities, but the excitement and fun that a book swap generates will help improve literacy levels in your community or organisation as well”.
So how does “The Great Book Swap” work?
- Prior to the “The Great Book Swap” the students bring in a book that they love but can bear to part with. Ms Davis and Mr Thompson will be collecting the books on the 3-6 site, and Ms Campbell and Miss Dwyer on the K-2 site.
- On the day (Tuesday 20 August) the students bring a gold coin for the right to choose a “new” book. It’s that easy!
Many thanks to those students who have already donated a pre-loved book. If you would like to support the event further, you can make an online donation to the school’s fundraising page in the lead up to the event.
We look forward to your support.

Athletics Carnival
What an amazing day and well done to the organisers - the event flowed so well. Big thanks to all the parents who helped out at the canteen or the bbq, to provide lunch for everyone. Heather T, Vicki Q, Alicia C, Vivian W, Naomi D, Jen H, Russell N, Mick W, Matt W and AndrewPdS, and to Jen M for her lovely slice. The most standout memory from the day had to be the outstanding sportsmanship displayed by all the students! It really showcased our amazing school and community, especially our superstar kids! Well done kids, you did Penno proud!
Annual Strings Soiree
The annual String Ensemble Soiree is coming up soon! Everyone is welcome to come along and watch our strings students perform individual items before a panel ofhelpful adjudicators. Thanks to the many volunteers who made this a great day for the kids and the school! Your time is much appreciated in preparing lap cards, setting up on the day and organising the canteen lunch special. If you can help with collecting the sponsorship money from one or both offices, counting and compiling the funds in coming weeks, please contact Christine K on 0424 744 315 .
Remember kids, hand in your Walkathon sponsorship money to school by Friday 16th August to go into the prize draw for a giant Beanie Boo, book packs, games packs and $50 Rebel Sport voucher!

The canteen menu is undergoing some changes. Some of these changes are in preparation of submitting the menu for approval by the Healthy Kids Association. Some are to make things easier for our wonderful volunteers, especially new ones. Some are because of lack of volunteers, and others are to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use. Please bear with us while we work to get it right.
Please remember to click on the PSSA ALERT when ordering if your stage 3 child does PSSA sport.
Thank you to everyone who has responded to our calls for help. We are very grateful for you all.
There are still some gaps in the roster, making those days quite frantic and stressful. If you have any spare time on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, and would like to help at either K-2 or 3-6, I would love to hear from you.
Also, a HUGE THANK YOU to the BBQ LEGENDS who made the sausage sizzle possible at the athletics carnival. They are: Andrew Passe-de Silva, Mick Wilkin, Matt Whalan, Russell Nicholson, Greg Hammond and Dave Collins.
And, the lovely ladies who worked throughout the day, loading and unloading food, cutting hotdog buns, packing lollies and serving the masses, who are: Vicki, Alicia, Peta, Vivian, Jen H and Naomi D. A special thank you also to Mr Pinchbeck for corralling said masses.
