SZ App
There is an App available called ‘SZapp’ which can be downloaded onto your Android or iPhone. The link below details all the information you need regarding the set up and use of the App. https://pennanthillsps.schoolzineplus.com/szapp
While the App is available as a convenience to you it is not compulsory to download it; the newsletter will automatically be sent to your email address by default. If you do not receive an emailed newsletter from Schoolzine, please email the school office detailing your full name and preferred email address so that you can be added to the database.
This app also allows for messages to be sent from the school, very much like the eNews app that the school and many people currently use. However, the SZ app allows recipients to select which language they would like to read the message. With this ability, the school will be transitioning solely to this app throughout the remainder of Term 3 and will rely on the new app (SZ app) from the beginning of Term 4.
The benefits of this app are that it can translate messages and the newsletter into your preferred language, current links to the school website and calendar and there is an option for parents to send the school notifications about their child’s absence. Again it is not compulsory to download the app, however, I do believe the app will make it more convenient for families.
Father’s Day BBQ
Last Friday morning saw an outstanding turnout of fathers and their children to celebrate Father’s Day. Congratulations must go to Mrs Donoghue for her organisation of the whole event, it was certainly well-organised. Also thanks to the many teachers who arrived before 6am to assist with the breakfast. It was great to see so many people in attendance at the breakfast. Thanks for supporting the event. Congratulations to Mr Saliba on winning the raffle.
Festival of Choral Music
Last night the school’s Ramsay Yellow choir performed at the Opera House. The students were amazing and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity afforded to them. Mrs Griffith and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the performances and as usual, the students were amazing. Thanks must also go to Ms Stephens and Mr Bryant for accompanying the students for the whole day.
PHPS Art Show
Saturday 14 September is the school’s biannual Art Show. I for one am very much looking forward to viewing all the student’s artworks. All classes have been working towards displaying their skills. A special mention for Mrs McLaren who is the driving force behind the Art Show. She has given a lot of her time to support staff members to ensure a memorable Art Show. It would be great to see you there on the day. The hall will be open between 10am-3pm for viewing, entry will be a gold coin donation for Stewart House and the P&C will be cooking a BBQ on the day.
Community Generosity
A couple of weeks ago I sent out an email asking for support for a family doing it tough. The response from the community was overwhelming and I just wanted to say “Thank you” to every person who made contact with me to support this family. I can report that this particular family have moved in to their accommodation with lots of furnishings from Catholic Care and other agencies. The support from the school community with monetary donations and gift cards has been used to purchase smaller items that the family desperately needed. The family are extremely grateful for the support they have received. Thank you again to everyone who offered to help, what a fabulous community we live in!
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
SASS recognition week
Last week we celebrated our wonderful SASS staff. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful people who work alongside the teachers and students to ensure Pennant Hills Public School is fabulous. From answering queries in the office, dealing with finance and notes, supporting students in class and the playground, keeping up the maintenance of the school and many things in between, our SASS staff are flexible, proactive and fantastic. Thank you for all that you do for us!
Classroom visits
1S literacy - I was able to visit 1S this week during a literacy session. Miss Steele has been focusing on differentiating using open ended and choice based creative activities for students to demonstrate their learning. The level of engagement that I witnessed was phenomenal. Below is a picture of Kaye and Adelaide who practiced and performed a role play as an interpretation of the text they read with their guided reading group. A funny and engaging activity.
KB & KD mathematics – I was so excited to be able to assist during a small portion of a mathematics session with KB and KD students. The activities the students were involved in were so engaging and fun, they obviously love maths in Kindy! Not only were the students able to complete the activities, they articulated their understanding and mathematical processes confidently.
Isabella – “I put the big number in my head and then use my fingers to count the smaller number.”
Freddie – Had a domino with 7 dots in total – “I know that 3 and 3 is 6 so one more is 7.”
Jade – “8 and 2 more is 10 so 8 and 12 more is 20.”
WOW!
KP writing – The skills that KP students demonstrated in a writing session while I was in the room were simply brilliant. They have a real sense of ‘having a go’ at spelling words that they are unsure about and are also able to acknowledge that they may have misspelt a word, and that is OK! Some great strategies being used – well done KP! I caught the end of a science lesson where students were investigating the strength of aluminium foil depending on how it was manipulated. Every student I asked why they believed a certain option was their strongest, they were able to justify their opinion.
If you would like to view more of the wonderful things that are going on in our classrooms and across the school, please visit our school website –

Scholastic Book Club orders – Issue 6.
Issue 6 catalogues will be distributed to the students this week. The closing date for online orders is Wednesday 11 September – 9 pm.
As was the case last year parents are now required to place their own orders online. Consequently, the school does not accept cash or cheque payments. Please note that this year there is just one school account “Pennant Hills Public School” where all the K-6 classes are listed.
If you wish to place an order from the Book Club catalogue you will need to go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website page, register your details if you haven’t already done so and then pay by credit card. After the closing date for that issue your order will be sent directly to the school and distributed.
How do I order?
- Go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website to register your details. You will need to enter your name, email address and a password. Click on “Add new child” and using the drop down menu locate our school and your child’s class. If you have children on both sites you may decide to register and place your entire order just with one child to save time.
- Enter your child’s first name and their surname initial. Please note that Scholastic does not share student details with third parties or use this information for marketing purposes. This information is for distribution for when the order arrives at the school.
- Click on “ORDER“and enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue and follow the prompts to make payment by credit card.
- All orders are then processed after the closing date and delivered to the school to be distributed.
Please note there is no need to return a paper order form or payment receipts to the school.
Indigenous Literacy Day – Wednesday 4 September
Tomorrow is Indigenous Literacy Day which is a national celebration of Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. It is the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s (ILF) major fundraising and advocacy national event. New community publications are launched at the Sydney Opera House, while schools and organisations host Great Book Swaps and other fundraising activities in their local community.
Since 2015 our school has been supporting the work of the ILF by holding a “Great Book Swap” during Book Week in Term 3. In total we have now raised $4667 .
Our students can indeed be proud knowing that they have assisted in providing high quality books to Indigenous students in remote communities.

Walkathon Committee
Last night, students from Ramsay Choir sang at the Opera House as part of the combined choir at the Festival of Choral Music. The combined choir sang a variety of songs, some accompanied by piano but also a stage band and orchestra. It was a magical sound, nothing compares to the sound of 700 angelic voices accompanied by a Symphony Orchestra. Our choir did us proud and they sang with joy and enthusiasm. Thank you to Mr Bryant for coming with us and joining in the singing. Thank you to our wonderful parents for your support in getting the students to rehearsals each week and your enthusiasm too. Well done Ramsay Yellow choir.
In two weeks time, it is Weemala choir's turn. They will be participating in the Primary Proms festival at the Town Hall. For many students, this is their first "big" concert and we wish them the very best.
In week 10, on Wednesday 25 September, Weemala choir will be singing at the Performance Assembly.
Thank you
Julie Anne Stevens
Choir Teacher

The Fathering Project
Save the date for the 2019 Kids and Dads Camp, Friday 18th October.
There's more to celebrate this Father's Day, because dads are 'dadding' differently. The Fathering Project, is all about elevating and celebrating the role of fathers in our lives, so Sunday is a huge day.
To celebrate Father's Day, we explored what fathering looks like in 2019 and released the Fathering Facts Survey. With over 1,800 responses from Aussie Dads, it looks like dads are sharing the load, they're doing more housework, changing more nappies, getting more involved in the emotional stuff and finding more ways to connect with their children. But most importantly, they're recognising their impact on the health and wellbeing of their kids.
Check out the results of our Fathering Facts Survey – and find out how you can take your fathering even further.
Go to the The Fathering Project website and see the results.
Hope you all had an amazing Happy Fathers Day! A very special big thank you to Ali Pride for organising the Father’s Day stall. Ali puts a lot of time and effort into organising the Mother’s and Father’s Day presents for the stall, and we thank you very much Ali. Thanks also to her team of helpers on the day Megan Kelly, Siobhan Hancock, Alison Hales, Jen Sinkinson and Chantal Cohen.
THE GREEN TEAM
The dangers of plastic
- PLASTIC CAN AFFECT HUMAN HEALTH - Toxic chemicals that leach from plastic can be found in human tissue and blood, this has been linked the birth defects, reduced immunity and cancers.
- PLASTIC POLLUTES OUR GROUND WATER - Seepage from plastics buried in landfill flows through the water table, into lakes and rivers which may pollute water sources for humans, animals and edible plants.
- PLASTIC DAMAGES WILDLIFE - We all know about turtles and other wildlife consuming plastic, especially plastic bags in the ocean, animals can also become entangled in plastic waste.
- PLASTIC PUTS POISON IN THE FOOD CHAIN - Even the tiniest plankton in our seas and oceans consume minute pieces of broken down plastic, algae that many sea creatures feed on is being displaced by these microplastics. When small sea creatures eat plastic it travels up the food chain, when they are consumed by larger sea creatures. This leads to toxic chemicals in the fish we eat. PLASTIC POLLUTION HAS FINANCIAL REPERCUSSIONS - Plastic pollution results in heavy financial costs to the human healthcare system, business, tourism and animal health.
It is time to reduce dependence on plastic in your household, look for alternative storage solutions, shop carefully and when you are finished with plastic products recycle wherever possible.

The canteen menu is undergoing some changes. Some of these changes are in preparation of submitting the menu for approval by the Healthy Kids Association. Some are to make things easier for our wonderful volunteers, especially new ones. Some are because of lack of volunteers, and others are to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use. Please bear with us while we work to get it right.
Thank you to everyone who has responded to our calls for help. We are very grateful for you all.
There are still some gaps in the roster, making those days quite frantic and stressful. If you have any spare time on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, and would like to help at either K-2 or 3-6, I would love to hear from you.
Warm Apple Crumble with Custard will be available again this Friday at the primary canteen for recess, for $1.50.

Uniform Shop Storage
The introduction of multiple new stock lines in the last couple of years has seen the uniform shop reach storage capacity. The current storage layout is that ALL stock in each size is displayed and readily available for sale all year round. A cost-effective solution for our storage issues was discussed at our last committee meeting, and it was decided that the easiest and by far the cheapest solution was to pack away 2-3 stock lines in the off-season. In summer track pants, girls’ winter tunics and boys’ trousers will be put into storage and in winter the new girls’ culottes and shirts will be packed away into storage. This means that in the last few weeks of Term 3 some winter garments will not be available for sale and in the last few weeks of Term 1 some summer garments will not be available for sale.
All summer stock is due to arrive by the end of this week, and as such girls’ winter tunics, boys’ trousers and the sport track pants will be packed away into storage and will NOT be available for sale from next week and throughout the summer months.
Changes to the Summer Uniform
As approved by the P&C late last year there will be some changes made to the summer uniform effective Term 4 2019. The new girls’ embroidered summer shirts and culottes and the boys’ short sleeve embroidered shirts will arrive in the first week of September. The existing girls’ summer dress remains unchanged, and the culottes and shirts will simply be an additional option for the girls. The boys’ summer shirts will now have the school crest embroidered on them, and as per Department of Education policy with any uniform change there is a phase in period. As such, the boys may continue to wear their unembroidered short sleeve shirts for three years and after that phase in period the embroidered short sleeve shirts will become compulsory.
Summer Uniform
All students are required to wear summer uniform in Term 4. In readiness for next term, summer stock will be arriving throughout the next week. Orders can be placed for summer uniforms and the items will be delivered to your child’s class, or alternatively you may attend the shop during opening hours.
Ordering Uniforms
Uniforms can be ordered by attending the Uniform Shop during opening hours, or alternatively an order form can be completed and together with payment of cash, cheque or card details handed in at either office. Orders will be filled and then delivered to the children’s classes. A combined pricelist and order form can be downloaded from the school website by following the links to Our School and What We Offer. Uniforms can also be ordered online through Flexischools, however prices will include the Flexischools’ surcharge.
Please note that uniform orders cannot be paid via the school online payment service.
Hours
Monday and Tuesday 8:45am – 10:45am
Thursday 3:00pm – 4:00pm
