Art Show
Saturday’s Art Show was an outstanding success. The student works were absolutely brilliant! I was amazed at the level of the art works on display. Much of the thanks needs to be directed towards the teachers for their preparation and dedication to supporting the students and making sure they were a success. Thank you to the P&C for putting on a BBQ for the visitors throughout the day. This certainly added to the experience and it was great to see so many people come and have a look and then have lunch at school. Well done to Andrew Passe-De Silva and his team.
The Art Show was open yesterday and today for anyone to come and have a look if they were not able to attend on Saturday and for the classes to come through and spend some time appreciating the other art works. Yesterday, Mr Ross Warren – Principal of Pennant Hills High School, visited the Art Show and was absolutely blown away by the level of the works on display. I thank Mr Warren for taking the time to visit. Today, Mr Mark Anderson – newly appointed Director Educational Leadership for Hornsby (Congratulations!) visited the Art Show and again was in awe of the students’ works.
The most important acknowledgement for the Art Show and its success must go to Mrs Anne McLaren and her team of helpers – Mrs Griffith, Mrs Coventry, Miss Ashelford, Ms Campbell and Mrs Van der Wal. There were also several teachers who were very supportive and flexible during set up. Mrs McLaren has out done herself with the set up and flawless planning and support for all the teachers, when and where needed. Congratulations on an outstanding Art Show Mrs McLaren!
Mrs Wasson and I are looking at decorating our offices with artworks from the Art Show. If would like to donate your artwork to one of us to be displayed in one of the offices please let your teacher know.
Dance Eisteddfods
On Sunday the school’s dance groups performed at Pacific Hills Christian School in the Hills Dance Spectacular Eisteddfod. There were some outstanding results. The Year 2 Dance group came 5th, Boys’ Dance group came 1st and were ‘Most Entertaining’, Stage 2 Dance group came 2nd and ‘Most Entertaining’ and Stage 3 Dance group came 5th. Each group was in their own section and performed brilliantly. Thanks to the staff that attended on the day to support the students and Arnold for sharing his knowledge and passion teaching these students.
Primary Proms Town Hall Concert
Last night Mrs Wasson and Mrs Griffith had the pleasure of watching the Weemala Choir perform at Sydney’s iconic Town Hall. From all reports it was an amazing performance and the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you to Mrs Reid for accompanying the students throughout the entire day. Congratulations to Ms Stevens for her commitment to the choir for another successful performance. Ms Stevens is an asset to the school and it is obvious the students benefit from her knowledge and passion.

A very special mention to April in Kindergarten who over the weekend ran a Lemonade and Book Stall to raise money for the school. She raised $25 and proudly donated the money to the school yesterday. I look forward to working with April to make sure the money she has raised goes towards resources for the school.
What a marvellous gesture!

NAPLAN
NAPLAN results for this year are due to arrive at school this week. As soon as they arrive they will be distributed to parents of students in Years 3 and 5. These results will provide an indication of how your child is progressing with their learning. As I always mention your child’s classroom teacher is the BEST person to be discussing their education. NAPLAN is a one-off assessment and may not be a true indication of their abilities or achievements. If you have any concerns please make an appointment to talk with your child’s teacher. Please remember this assessment was conducted in May and much would have changed since that time.
As a school staff we will be analysing individual and school results during Term 4 to identify areas of strength and areas that need improvement.
Staff
Thank you Mrs Wasson for relieving as Principal in my absence last week. She did an outstanding job. Thanks also to Mrs Coventry and Mrs Griffith who relieved as Deputy Principal for that time. We have a great staff at PHPS who go above and beyond in so many areas at school. All of which is to provide the students with opportunities to shine.
Have a great week!
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Art Show
I must reiterate Mr Pinchbeck’s comments on the outstanding success that was the art show. The high volume turn out on Saturday was a true reflection of the quality of work our students create and the dedication our teachers and support staff provide. The highlight was seeing the pride on the students faces as they presented and explained their artworks to their parents, siblings, friends and grandparents. The curation was beautiful, thanks to the mastermind that is Mrs McLaren – thank you and your team, well done! Congratulations Pennant Hills, I have never seen anything like it.
The doors open!
Primary Proms
In my life, I had never stepped foot into the Sydney Town Hall, until last night. Mrs Griffith and I had the privilege of watching the Primary Proms mass choir perform in front of a sold out audience, an ethereal experience. Well done to our amazing choir students, who sung their little hearts out and who reportedly were some of the most well behaved students of the whole day and evening event. Thank you to Ms Stevens and Mrs Reid for accompanying the students during the rehearsals and into the performance at night.

Class visits – 3H
I had the pleasure of visiting some of the Year 3 classes during the week. 3H were beginning a writing session where they started brainstorming some of their hobbies as a discussion point. Mrs Volpe Dakin then brought out the book ‘My Place’ that they have been studying. The students then began jotting down some thoughts onto whiteboards. They returned to their desks and worked hard at producing a text that connected their hobby to the tree in ‘My Place’, while referring to the timelines and artworks they had created. A rich exercise that was drawing from the student’s prior knowledge and made connections to previous tasks. Well done 3H!
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

ART SHOW & P&C BBQ
A huge thank you to all our helpers who lent a hand at the BBQ on Saturday, whether you cooked, served, set up, packed up or just helped in some way! It was a huge success! Thanks also to all our amazing community for supporting the bbq, without you, it wouldn’t be such a success. Thanks to Mr Pinchbeck and all the staff for the huge effort they put in to the Art Show, the hall looked brilliant. And last but certainly not least to the kids, your hard work, creativity and enthusiasm made this the best show ever, well done!!

THE GREEN TEAM
Eating for the environment
An easy way to help the environment is to make some simple changes to our dietary choices -
- Reduce your red meat intake, especially beef and fill your plate with more vegetables - The farming of beef requires huge land and water consumption, while producing large amounts of methane.
- Eat vegetarian meals at least a couple of times a week - Make good use of your veg scraps by composting them.
- Buy organic products where possible - Organic farming does not use pesticides and harmful chemicals used in conventional farming practices, these substances build up in the soil.
- Avoid products containing palm oil - Vast deforestation is involved in the production of palm oil, which has dire repercussions for the environment. Palm oil is present in many processed foods.
The great news is that by implementing these changes in your food intake, you will also be improving your health.

Pusheen says “PLEASE READ”
Roster
Here is the roster for this week. Please remember to sign in at the office of either site before starting your shift.
K -2 Site
Wednesday 18th September – Christine L and Sherry. PIZZA DAY!! – No other lunch orders.
Thursday 19th September – Charol and Lisa S.
Friday 20th September – Megan and Phye.
3-6 Site
Wednesday 18th September – Zoey, Alicia, Angela. PIZZA DAY!! – No other lunch orders.
Thursday19th September – Vivian. Help with packing lunches would be appreciated.
Friday 20th September – Narelle and Jenni. Need help for packing lunches please. 12-1pm.
The canteen menu is undergoing some changes. Some of these changes are in preparation of submitting the menu for approval by the Healthy Kids Association. Some are to make things easier for our wonderful volunteers, especially new ones. Some are because of lack of volunteers, and others are to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use. Please bear with us while we work to get it right.
We have the new 3.5 HSR Paddle Pops in Chocolate, Choc/Caramel and Rainbow this week. You will find them on Flexischools. At this stage they are only available at the 3-6 canteen.
Thank you to everyone who has responded to our calls for help. We are very grateful for you all.
There are still some gaps in the roster, making those days quite frantic and stressful. If you have any spare time on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, and would like to help at either K-2 or 3-6, I would love to hear from you.
Pizza Day is tomorrow!! Orders are now closed.
There will be no other lunch orders on that day. Both canteens will be open as usual for over the counter sales.

Year 6 Shirts 2020
Year 5 parents please note that orders for the 2020 Year 6 shirts are being finalised this week.
Uniform Shop Storage
The introduction of multiple new stock lines in the last couple of years has seen the uniform shop reach storage capacity. The current storage layout is that ALL stock in each size is displayed and readily available for sale all year round. A cost-effective solution for our storage issues was discussed at our last committee meeting, and it was decided that the easiest and by far the cheapest solution was to pack away 2-3 stock lines in the off-season. In summer track pants, girls’ winter tunics and boys’ trousers will be put into storage and in winter the new girls’ culottes and shirts will be packed away into storage. This means that in the last few weeks of Term 3 some winter garments will not be available for sale and in the last few weeks of Term 1 some summer garments will not be available for sale.
All summer stock has now arrived, and as such girls’ winter tunics, boys’ trousers and the sport track pants have been packed away into storage and are now NOT available for sale throughout the summer months.
Changes to the Summer Uniform
As approved by the P&C late last year there will be some changes made to the summer uniform effective Term 4 2019. The new girls’ embroidered summer shirts and culottes and the boys’ short sleeve embroidered shirts will arrive in the first week of September. The existing girls’ summer dress remains unchanged, and the culottes and shirts will simply be an additional option for the girls. The boys’ summer shirts will now have the school crest embroidered on them, and as per Department of Education policy with any uniform change there is a phase in period. As such, the boys may continue to wear their unembroidered short sleeve shirts for three years and after that phase in period the embroidered short sleeve shirts will
become compulsory.
Summer Uniform
All students are required to wear summer uniform in Term 4. In readiness for next term, all summer stock has arrived and is now available for sale. Orders can be placed for summer uniforms and the items will be delivered to your child’s class, or alternatively you may attend the shop during opening hours.
Please note that the girls summer shirts and culottes are both in stock and now available for sale to all families who placed an expression of interest order earlier this year.
Second Hand Uniforms
If you have any uniforms in good condition that you no longer require please consider donating them to the Uniform Shop.
Ordering Uniforms
Uniforms can be ordered by attending the Uniform Shop during opening hours, or alternatively an order form can be completed and together with payment of cash, cheque or card details handed in at either office. Orders will be filled and then delivered to the children’s classes. A combined pricelist and order form can be downloaded from the school website by following the links to Our School and What We Offer. Uniforms can also be ordered online through Flexischools, however prices will include the Flexischools’ surcharge.
Please note that uniform orders cannot be paid via the school online payment service
