World Teachers' Day
Today at PHPS we celebrated World Teachers' Day. This day acknowledges the many and varied activities that teachers engage in to support the holistic development of every single child. Teachers organise, facilitate and attend many activities outside of their teaching responsibilities. This involvement does not come with any extra pay for the extra hours; it comes with the knowledge that they are providing students with opportunities and lifelong memories.
Thank you so much for the P&C for their support throughout the year and the effort they have gone to today to acknowledge the efforts of all the teachers. The morning tea that was put on for the teachers today was magnificent and the gift card is very much appreciated and valued. Thank you to all involved and please know that the teachers value the opportunities provided to your children and today’s acknowledgement is awesome.
Grandparents' Day
Last Friday we celebrated Grandparents' Day at PHPS. The day was an amazing success with approximately 200-250 people in attendance. The Year 2 Dance group, Kindergarten, Year 1 and a combined K-2 performance, treated those that attended to some amazing performances. The whole day had such a positive vibe about it. Thank you to all the parents that came up and assisted with morning tea, Miss Parras for her amazing organisation of the whole day. We received so many positive comments about the experience – well done Miss Parras!
Kindy 2020 Parent Evening
Tonight in the school hall at 7pm there will be a Kindergarten 2020 Parent Information evening. If your child is starting Kindergarten next year, or you know someone who has a child starting next year, please feel free to come up to the hall. This is an opportunity to hear about school, this is especially important if this is your first child attending school. We look forward to seeing you there tonight.
P&C Spring Clean Up
Thank you to the parent volunteers who gave up their Sunday afternoon to conduct a Spring Clean Up. There were some targeted areas within the school to clean up to maximise the school’s storage options. The time and effort contributed on Sunday is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to the following people for the efforts and time; Andrew Passe Da Silva, Christine Kalatunga, Dayan McLeod, Greg Hammond, Damon Murray, Jen Ashton, Luke Whenman, Peta Powrie and Chris Laing.
School Leaders Parliament House Tour
Last Thursday I accompanied our four school leaders and their parents to NSW’s Parliament House at the invitation of the Minister for Energy and Environment, Member for Hornsby – The Hon. Matt Kean. Each year Minister Kean invites the school leaders and their parents from his electorate to a special morning tea. Here the students are taken on a tour of Parliament House to see the inner workings of parliament. After the tour special guests are invited to talk to the students about leadership and their individual leadership journeys. This year the students were spoken to about leadership by Minister Kean, the Premier of NSW – The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian, former Socceroo Captain Alex Tobin, current Matilda Jess Nash (15 Years old), current Waratah Alex Newsome and current GWS Giants netballer Keira Austin. All spoke about the importance of dedication, hard work and perseverance when faced with challenges and setbacks. The students took home some great messages from the experience.
Requests for 2020
Planning for 2020 is well underway. If you have any requests or information relating to class placement or teacher allocation for 2020 please put it in writing and mark it to the attention of Mr Pinchbeck. All requests will be treated with the strictest confidentiality. I cannot promise that I can cater for your request but I can promise that each request will be given due consideration. Thank you for taking the time if you choose to write to me.
Student Accounts
Thank you to the many families that are up to date with their accounts. Payment of these accounts allows the school to plan a wide range of activities for the students to participate in and learn and develop from those experiences. If you are not up to date can you please rectify this situation as soon as possible. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please contact me for a private and confidential chat about your situation. Appointments can be made through the school’s office on 9484 1134.
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Grandparents’ Day
I will reiterate Mr Pinchbeck’s comments on the success of Grandparents' Day and thank the K-2 teachers, in particular Miss Parras and Ms Lee in the office who ensured the smooth running of the day. I had numerous people approach me during the morning tea portion of the day with many compliments and praises for the wonderful morning. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend, it was a truly amazing turn out.
Class visits
I had the pleasure of visiting some of the Kindergarten classes last week. KB and KD were engaged in maths activities and one of the activities involved the students matching numerals to the amount of an object shown. It was great to see some of the strategies the students were using to count the objects. I sat with Maxwell who counted by 5’s then by ones to get to 18, turning the card on its side to make it easier to count – great work Maxwell!
KR were in the middle of literacy groups when I popped in. Some students were independently reading, some were reading with Mrs Mackay, others were on the iPads engaged in a phonics game and some were explaining the trash or treasure game to me. Emi did a wonderful job in explaining that I needed to sound out the word and then decide if it was a real word (treasure) or trash! Thanks Emi. Parker was reading an interesting book about sinking and floating and it was a lot of fun guessing which items might sink or float. He informed me that items will float if the water can’t get on top of them, that’s why a boat floats. Such insight Parker!
Fairytale Fiasco
Early Stage One had an incursion on Monday where they were involved in dramatic performances using dress ups and a sound storyline. They were presented with a problem and collaboratively they had to solve it. The students were highly engaged and had a wonderful time!
World Teachers' Day
The teachers at Pennant Hills Public School are truly remarkable. The time and effort that they put in on a daily basis is astounding, not to mention all of the extra-curricular, out-of-hours time that is dedicated to preparation and out of school events. Teaching is a rewarding career, you are able to make a difference in the lives of people, whether that be in academics or social aspects, we take pride in knowing that we are helping to shape the future. Thank you to our amazing teachers for all that you do.
I sent an email asking our teaching staff why they became teachers, you will see their responses on the tree below.
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

Introduction to Music Night
Last Wednesday night saw our yearly Introduction to Music Night, an evening where children not currently in the PHPS music programme can try out instruments, watch the string ensemble and senior band perform and find out information about band, strings and choir.
Well done to the string ensemble for their amazing Star Wars theme! And to the band for reminding us how great the Police Band were by playing Eye of the Tiger, the combined item from the Police Band visit.
A very special thank you to Melissa Griffiths for giving up her evening to aid the P&C, thank you to Julie Anne Stevens for coming along to talk about choir, and thank you to the school for allowing us to use the hall.
If you would like more information about our wonderful music programmes, please contact Phil at phpsstrings@gmail.com or Rae at phpsband@gmail.com so that we can make next year’s music even more impressive!

The canteen menu is undergoing some changes. Some of these changes are in preparation of submitting the menu for approval by the Healthy Kids Association. Some are to make things easier for our wonderful volunteers, especially new ones. Some are because of lack of volunteers, and others are to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use. Please bear with us while we work to get it right.
NEW TO THE MENU;
Garlic Bread (85g/5slices) - $1.00
Chicken Salsa Wrap - $4.00
Chill Js (100% sparkling fruit juice) - $2.00
HASH BROWNS are moving to WEDNESDAY LUNCH.
LARGE PIES and SAUSAGE ROLLS are leaving the menu, to help us make the required 3 to 1 ratio of everyday and occasional foods.
Garlic Bread will be available at recess on Wednesdays and Thursdays for $1.00.
We are also changing from Oak flavoured milk to Paul’s MILKY MAX. These contain less sugar and come in a poptop bottle, eliminating the need for straws. Please encourage your children to either place their empty bottles in the orange “Return and Earn” bins at school, or bring them home (closed), so that they can earn the 10c.
Chill J bottles are also “Return and Earn”.
