Stage 3 Camp
Last week our Stage 3 students and teachers visited our nation’s capital, Canberra. The students had three packed days of discovery, exploration and enjoyment. They visited new and old Parliament House, AIS, CSIRO, Questacon, National Museum, War Memorial, and the National Art Gallery. The students had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity. Special thanks to the teachers attending: Mrs Griffith, Mr Bryant, Mrs Cox, Miss Ashelford, Mrs Macnaughtan and Miss Steele for giving up their time to support the students. Many of the places the students visited commented on the outstanding behaviour of your children, as did the bus drivers and the teachers. Well done boys and girls you have represented your school with pride.
NSW PSSA State Athletics Carnival
Last week Eddie, Finlay, Alex and Sid represented our school, Beecroft Zone PSSA and Sydney North PSSA at the NSW PSSA State Athletics carnival in the 4x100m relay. At this carnival, they competed against the best school for each representative area. The boys came a very credible 4th at the carnival which equates to being the 4th best school relay team in NSW. A huge achievement boys, well-done.
Schools Spectacular
Yesterday marked the first rehearsal for Schools Spectacular. The children spent the day at Sydney Olympic Park learning their part for the performances next Friday and Saturday. From all accounts they had a great day and are very excited about the upcoming performances. The rehearsals step up a notch or two next week. We wish them the best of luck for next week and thank Ms Stevens, Miss Pinnuck and Mrs Griffith for supporting the students and giving up their time for these rehearsals and performances.
Remembrance Day
Monday 11 November at 11am saw all staff and students commemorate the end of World War 1 with a minute’s silence. The students were very respectful during this time and they had age appropriate discucssions in their class about the significance of the day. Thank you to Mrs Donoghue for her organisation.
Movember
Thank you to the many people who have donated to Movember, as I attempt to grow a ‘Mo’. It has proven to be a point of conversation, which is great. So far I have raised $800, but most importantly men are talking about their health. I would encourage all men to take ownership of their health and look after themselves.
The following extract is from the Movember website.
Think about this for a second: globally, men die 6 years earlier than women. To make it worse, the reasons are largely preventable. 1 in 6 Aussie men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. And 3 out of 4 suicides in Australia are men.
Pretty shocking, right? That’s why I’m doing Movember this year: they’re hell-bent on changing the face of men’s health and so am I.
The money I raise this Movember will help fund groundbreaking research, innovative health projects, scientific breakthroughs for cancer treatments and life-changing mental health programs.
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

Stage 3 in Canberra
Last week, Stage Three stayed in Canberra for two nights at the Canberra Park Resort. We visited a number of landmarks, including The War Memorial, both Old and New Parliament Houses, CSIRO Discovery, the Art Gallery, the National Museum, the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) and Questacon. It was great fun and we also learnt a variety of new things, including the history of Australian government, advanced science through a bunch of hands-on activities, and additional information from tours throughout different exhibits. An absolute favourite of this trip was Questacon, where we and the rest of the stage were able to experiment and explore. The best part of this was the free fall, a six metre drop that gave the sensation of floating in space. All in all, this excursion was certainly a highlight of the year and the both everyone in Stage Three had a great time.
- Helen & Amelie 6B
Our Stage 3 students last week took an education tour of the national capital as part of our Civics and Citizenship program. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy, supported by The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER). A fabulous time was had by all!

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Kinderlinks
Our first Kinderlinks session began beautifully last week with all of our pre-schoolers eager and ready to come to big school. They were remarkably settled, well done! As for the parents, there were a few mixed emotions but all in all a wonderful morning. Thank you to our Kindergarten teachers and Ms Lee in the office for facilitating a great transition program and to our Year 5 student helpers who came to support our new families.
Unfortunately, Kinderlinks was cancelled this morning due to the extreme weather conditions and fire danger. It is back on next Tuesday, where we will also conduct the parent information session.
Buddy classes
Pennant Hills Public School has a wonderful buddy program whereby older classes and younger classes get together for reading, art and sport activities. The connection between the students is a wonderful thing to witness and it benefits both parties. The younger students are exposed to maturity and a mentor, the older students get to demonstrate their leadership skills.
Assembly
We have some very talented students at Pennant Hills Public School who are often acknowledged at our weekly assemblies, which alternate fortnightly for K-2 and 3-6 in the hall. Last week KP and KR demonstrated their dancing prowess to a delighted audience. Thank you students and thank you to the teachers and Arnold, our dedicated dance teacher, for bringing it altogether.
RFF – Release from Face to Face
Families often ask what teachers do in their 2 hours of allocated RFF each week. This time is used predominately for preparing lessons, organising school events like excursions, reflecting, analysing and evaluating programs and creating resources for our students. Below you will see Mrs McLaren testing out a Science/Visual Arts activity to ensure that it is appropriate for her students. Just one of the many things that happen in the staffroom.
MacqLit and MiniLit
We are fortunate to have two dedicated Learning and Support Teachers at Pennant Hills and our P & C generously contribute funds to ensure we hold these positions. We are currently running the MacqLit and MiniLit programs throughout the school and I was truly blown away by the reading fluency progress that this particular group of student have made since entering the program. You have worked very hard students and you deserve to be proud of your wonderful achievements. Well done Ms Schmidt and Mrs McSweeney for your enthusiasm and support of the program.
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

Scholastic Book Club orders – Issue 8
Issue 8 catalogues will be distributed to the students this week and will be the last issue for this year. The closing date for online orders is Wednesday 20 November – 9 pm.
Orders for Issue 7 were distributed to the students last week. If ever you find a problem with your order please contact the school the next day so that the matter can be dealt with immediately.
As was the case last year parents are now required to place their own orders online. Consequently, the school does not accept cash or cheque payments. Please note that this year there is just one school account “Pennant Hills Public School” where all the K-6 classes are listed.
If you wish to place an order from the Book Club catalogue you will need to go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website page, register your details if you haven’t already done so and then pay by credit card. After the closing date for that issue your order will be sent directly to the school and distributed.
How do I order?
- Go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website to register your details. You will need to enter your name, email address and a password. Click on “Add new child” and using the drop down menu locate our school and your child’s class. If you have children on both sites you may decide to register and place your entire order just with one child to save time.
- Enter your child’s first name and their surname initial. Please note that Scholastic does not share student details with third parties or use this information for marketing purposes. This information is for distribution for when the order arrives at the school.
- Click on “ORDER“and enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue and follow the prompts to make payment by credit card.
- All orders are then processed after the closing date and delivered to the school to be distributed.
Please note there is no need to return a paper order form or payment receipts to the school.

The canteen menu is undergoing some changes. Some of these changes are in preparation of submitting the menu for approval by the Healthy Kids Association. Some are to make things easier for our wonderful volunteers, especially new ones. Some are because of lack of volunteers, and others are to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use. Please bear with us while we work to get it right.
