Education Week
Next week all NSW Department of Education schools will celebrate Education Week. This week is designed to showcase the outstanding learning experiences that we know take place in every single school, every single day. This year’s theme is ‘Every Students, Every Voice’. To celebrate Education Week this year we will be holding the annual Walkathon on Monday during the day. Thank you to Mrs Reid and Mrs Kalatunga for their amazing organisation of what promises to be a wonderful day. On the same day between 4-6pm all classrooms will be open for viewing. This is your opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and have a look at their learning. I thank you in advance for all your support with the student’s learning and I look forward to seeing you on that Monday.
Carpark Safety & Restrictions
During last term it was noticed that on occasions parents took liberties to park in either staff carparks for their convenience. To ensure everyone’s safety it is important to note that between the hours of 8am and 4pm both carparks are strictly for staff, deliveries, contractors and arrangements through the office for special circumstances. Parents are able to use the K-2 carpark before 8am and after 4pm to access BASC. When doing so please ensure that you park in designated spaces and drive slowly. I thank you in advance for your support with this to ensure everyone’s safety.
Planning for 2020
This term is the term where principals begin planning for 2020. If you know any children that will be starting Kindergarten in 2020 and live in our catchment area can you please encourage them to make contact with the school. This greatly assists me and the Department with planning. As well, if you are intending on leaving PHPS at the end of this year and you are currently in K-5 please send the school a quick email. Thanks for your understanding.
School Newsletter
Last week was the first week where we sent out the new format of the newsletter. We will continue to send out both formats for the next four weeks to ensure you receive the newsletter. To receive the new format please download the SZapp and search for Pennant Hills Public School. This app has some wonderful facilities; links to the school website, syncs with the school calendar, and you can submit absence notes – please ensure that you sign in the bottom text box when submitting an absence note.
The link below details all the information you need regarding the set up and use of the App. https://pennanthillsps.schoolzineplus.com/szapp
Outdoor Learning
Last week I mentioned that staff had participated in professional learning on Outdoor Education. From this professional learning, I can report that since then every single class has been outside enjoying the opportunity to utilise the school’s wonderful resources. I have witnessed art lessons, reading lessons, research based activities to name a few. Students and staff have commented on the benefits they have experienced from taking their learning outside. One student commented that they felt calmer when learning outside, which is great. I expect to see this continue and I am encouraging and supporting staff to do this. For me the school is the classroom and it is important for staff to provide a variety of ways to deliver engaging lessons to the students, for the student’s benefit.

Festival of Instrumental Music
Last night I had the privilege of listening to some of our school’s musicians at the Festival of Instrumental Music at The Opera House. These students, accompanied by Mrs Wasson, spent the day at The Opera House rehearsing in preparation for the performance. Whilst being a long day they all enjoyed the experience and opportunity to perform at the iconic Sydney landmark. Thank you to all involved especially Mrs Wasson for supervising the students from 9am -9pm, a huge effort.
Staffing Update
This Wednesday is Mrs Lisa Paisley’s last day at PHPS for a little while as she is going on Maternity Leave for the birth of her third child. Mrs Paisley is a valued staff member who is greatly assisting the school in many ways, in particular managing First Aid/medications and the school newsletter. We wish her and her family all the very best during this exciting time and we look forward to her return around December. Mrs Dearne Abla who is well-known to the school will be filling in on a Monday and Wednesday during this time. We warmly welcome her back to PHPS.
In week 4, Mrs Janette Louis will be joining PHPS on a Wednesday and Thursday for the remainder of the year. Mrs Louis is currently the School Administration Manager at Pennant Hills High School and will be temporarily joining PHPS, as she was successful through an Expression of Interest to fill in as a Business Administration Manager. She brings with her a wealth of experience and I am looking forward to her joining our team. Mrs Louis will oversee the school’s finances and Work, Health & Safety. This position is currently temporary and is funded by the Principal Support allocation that all principals receive.
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Festival of Instrumental Music
Yesterday saw nine of our talented strings students perform at the Sydney Opera House at the Festival of Instrumental Music. What talent we have at Pennant Hills! Our students behaved brilliantly and after an exhausting day of rehearsals, they performed to a full house at the Sydney Opera House – a feat many people will never be able to do. Congratulations Emma Y, Niamh H, Catherine B, Zoe G, Mesa H, Tara H, Lachlan M, Chloe X and Oliver H – you are all superstars! And a special thank you to Phil Y, our amazing accompanying parent helper who led the way through the backstage area of the Opera House.

Maker Night
We are pleased to announce that we have made the quota to secure Maker Night this year. Maker night will be held during Science week and will be a wonderful opportunity for families to work with their children to build a STEM robot. This year we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing. We are focusing on big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. This will help forge our future paths in the areas of space operations, space science, Earth observations, positioning systems and communications. We look forward to seeing you on the night!
When: Wednesday 14 August (Week 4)
Time: 5pm-7pm. Please feel free to come anytime within this timeframe.
If you would like to volunteer as a parent helper, please contact me.
Outdoor Learning
Since our Staff Development Day last week, classes have been utilizing our wonderful outdoor spaces for learning opportunities. It is wonderful to see classes taking advantage of the amazing spaces we have here at Pennant Hills. Many teachers and students have reported the instant wellbeing benefits of being outside. Some examples of outdoor learning are shown below, although classes across the school have been taking learning outdoors on a daily basis.

Kind Regards

LIBRARY NEWS - THE GREAT BOOK SWAP
“The Great Book Swap” returns in Book Week
To celebrate this year’s Book Week theme “Reading is my secret power”, our school is supporting the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) by holding a “Great Book Swap” during Book Week on Tuesday 20 August.
The ILF works to put books into the hands of children and families in remote Indigenous communities across Australia. In the lifetime of the project, with the support of many people and organisations, including schools, they have sent more than 350,000 new, high quality books to over 280 remote communities. This year it aims to gift another 35,000 books. The video link below provides an insight into the great work undertaken by the ILF.
So how does “The Great Book Swap” work?
- Prior to the “The Great Book Swap” the students bring in a book that they love but can bear to part with. Ms Davis and Mr Thompson will be collecting the books on the 3-6 site, and Ms Campbell and Miss Dwyer on the K-2 site.
- On the day (Tuesday 20 August) the students bring a gold coin for the right to choose a “new” book. It’s that easy!
The Great Book Swap is indeed a fantastic way to celebrate reading during Book Week and raise much needed funds for remote Indigenous communities. Many thanks to those students who have already donated a pre-loved book. We hope to surpass the $1001 that was raised last year. If you would like to support the event further, you can make an online donation to the school’s fundraising page in the lead up to the event.
We look forward to your support.

Scholastic Book Club orders – Issue 5
Issue 5 catalogues will be distributed to the students this week. The closing date for online orders is Wednesday 31 July at 9 pm.
As was the case last year parents are now required to place their own orders online. Consequently, the school does not accept cash or cheque payments. Please note that this year there is just one school account “Pennant Hills Public School” where all the K-6 classes are listed.
If you wish to place an order from the Book Club catalogue you will need to go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website page, register your details if you haven’t already done so and then pay by credit card. After the closing date for that issue your order will be sent directly to the school and distributed.
How do I order?
1. Go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website to register your details. You will need to enter your name, email address and a password. Click on “Add new child” and using the drop down menu locate our school and your child’s class. If you have children on both sites you may decide to register and place your entire order just with one child to save time.
2. Enter your child’s first name and their surname initial. Please note that Scholastic does not share student details with third parties or use this information for marketing purposes. This information is for distribution for when the order arrives at the school.
3. Click on “ORDER“and enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue and follow the prompts to make payment by credit card.
4. All orders are then processed after the closing date and delivered to the school to be distributed.
Please note there is no need to return a paper order form or payment receipts to the school.
