World Teachers’ Day
Across the globe, World Teachers’ Day is a day where school communities recognise the extraordinary efforts teachers go to for the children under their care. This year we will be acknowledging this day on Tuesday 29 October at 11:15am in the hall.
Teachers at PHPS love what they do. They are a wonderful bunch of professionals who give their time to ensure the students, your children, have every opportunity possible to grow and develop as positive members of our community.
Thank you so much to the school’s amazing P&C who are planning a morning tea for the staff on this day. There are many ways that you can show your appreciation for the work they do. You could:
- Write a letter
- Make a ‘Thank You’ card
- Draw a picture
Teachers do not want you to go and spend money on elaborate gifts or organise class gifts. A simple message of ‘Thanks!’ is all that I am suggesting. Can I please ask that if you do decide to do something that it be brought to school next Tuesday 29 October so that it all happens on the one day.
A Great Night had By All – The Fathering Project Camp
Last Friday night saw approximately 75 fathers and their children descend on Crosslands Reserve for the annual Fathering Project camp. When I arrived on Saturday morning, I was greeted with many smiles from children and fathers alike. All had commented on having a great time, with the only issue being a rather cold night (more so for some). Thank you to the P&C for their organisation of a wonderful initiative. The message being delivered was a simple one – “Be engaged to be effective!” The P&C will be looking to hold more activities to assist with fathers engaging with the school community throughout 2020.
The Fred Hollows Humanity Award
Last Wednesday Rhiannon (6G) was awarded The Fred Hollows Humanity Award for her compassion, integrity and kindness and trying to make a difference in her school and community. Throughout the year, Rhiannon has demonstrated these qualities by regularly trying to help others and focusing on their wellbeing. We are all very proud of her award.
Off to State
Congratulations to our Senior Boy’s Relay team, which competed at the Sydney North Athletics Carnival last week. The boys were the fastest qualifiers for the final and backed up their qualifying result with first place in the final. The team consisting of Sidney, Alex, Finlay and Eddie (Year 6) will now represent our school at the NSW PSSA State Athletics Carnival in Week 4. Well done boys, a huge achievement.
Boundary Road Changes
The RMS has advised me that there will be changes to Boundary Road. Please see the attached flyer for further information.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Grandparents’ Day for K-2 students
We are looking forward to welcoming our grandparents and special adults this Friday 25 October. I remember having grandparents’ day when I was in primary school and I loved showing them around the school and having morning tea! We will welcome the grandparents at 9:30 in the school hall, followed by classroom visits and an activity at 10am, then morning tea at 10:45.
We will see you then!
Outdoor learning
Since our Teacher Professional Learning on harnessing our beautiful outdoor spaces for quality learning time, you will regularly see Pennant Hills students outside during class times. As I was walking around the school I noticed the 2 following groups; Kindergarten were using their ‘reading spots’ and completing independent reading in the great outdoors and Stage 3 were participating in their fitness session. Look at that azure sky and green turf! Amazing!
Studies have shown the following benefits of outdoor learning;
- Positive wellbeing impacts – less stress and anxiety
- Increase in physical activity – healthier people
- Increased academic performance
- Develops a sense of place and improves an understanding of community
- Improved behaviour – yes, it’s true!
- It’s fun!
So if you’re having a hard Saturday with the kids, the message is to get them outside!
Use of the outdoor equipment
As much as we love outdoor learning, it is always supervised. During drop off and pick up times, the play equipment is closed. We do not have a teacher monitoring this area and can not ensure the safety of users. If you are dropping off or picking up your child and have their younger sibling on site, please ensure that they do not play on the equipment and that they are always supervised. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

DADS AND KIDS CAMP
What an amazing night it was. Our 3rd Fathering Camp was our biggest and best yet, backed by great weather! Thanks to all the dads and father figures that attended because without you, it would not have been so successful. Thanks to David Forrest from the Fathering Project, who came out and delivered a very inspiring talk, with tips on how we can all improve as fathers and father figures. Thanks also to Mr Pinchbeck, who attended in the morning in his own time. His constant help and support of TFP in our school and community is so very much appreciated. Finally, a huge thank you and well done to Dan Saunders and the committee and helpers for their hard work and time in preparing and setting up the overnight camp, they are Dave Collins, Jeremy Coster, Damon Murray, Russell Nicolson, Greg Ruston, Otte Homan, Chris Burden, Matt Whalan, Mick Wilkin and Andrew Passe-de Silva. We would also like to thank Darren B, Elke S, Aiden and Luke C, Imogen H, Liam and Jess D for helping with activities, and also Carol and Paul Cleasby from TCBC for devoting their time to help with cooking, serving and entertaining the kids. The Dads and kids seemed to have a fantastic time and we look forward to an even bigger and better one next year.
Would also like to thank Tina’s Bakery, Penno IGA and Market Place and George’s Meats for their ongoing support of all our P&C events!
SPRING CLEAN DAY - Sunday 27th October
We need muscle + helping hands from 1-2pm this Sunday at K-2 please! Can you spare an hour to help us clear out some P&C storage areas? If you have a trailer or trolley it would be very helpful. Gloves also recommended. See you there!
Sustainable Gardening;
Have you ever thought about how your gardening decisions affect the environment?
Sustainable gardening involves making careful well planned choices, with the objective to not harm the earth and life within it, by not requiring the use of pesticides and herbicides, with reduced necessity for watering, while achieving enhancement of your landscaped space.
The single most beneficial act that you can perform for the environment, in your garden is to start composting. Compost bins and worm farms can be inexpensively procured from hardware stores and gardening centres. Residents of Hornsby council are entitled to purchase these half price, by watching online tutorials and completing a quiz on the subject of composting and worm farming, take a look here -
https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/property/waste/organic-waste/Compost-and-Worm-Farming
Some simple steps you can take include choosing hardy native plants, hand weeding (rather than using chemical weed killers), and watering using grey water (old washing up/shower/bath water) or even better a rainwater tank and mulching to limit weed growth and keep plants moist, thus reducing the need for watering.

Changes to the Summer Uniform
As approved by the P&C late last year there will be some changes made to the summer uniform effective Term 4 2019. The new girls’ embroidered summer shirts and culottes and the boys’ short sleeve embroidered shirts are now available. The existing girls’ summer dress remains unchanged, and the culottes and shirts will simply be an additional option for the girls. The boys’ summer shirts will now have the school crest embroidered on them, and as per Department of Education policy with any uniform change there is a phase in period. As such, the boys may continue to wear their unembroidered short sleeve shirts for three years and after that phase in period the embroidered short sleeve shirts will become compulsory.
Girls’ New Culottes and Shirts
Please note that the girls summer shirts and culottes are both in stock and now available for sale to all families who placed an expression of interest order earlier this year.
On the 1st of November orders for the culottes and shirts will be opened up to all families who didn’t lodge an expression of interest.
Ordering Uniforms
Uniforms can be ordered by attending the Uniform Shop during opening hours, or alternatively an order form can be completed and together with payment of cash, cheque or card details handed in at either office.
