Learning at Home
Thank you for the amazing support that is taking place in our community as we navigate this terrible situation. The feedback from the community about their ‘Learning at Home’ stories has been great to see (there is a sample of these activities later in this newsletter). Please keep them coming in.
Teachers are continuing to provide learning for all students, however, we have moved to a balance of staff working from home as well as school. Our school is still operational, so if you need or want to send your children to school there will be supervision. Our lessons for next week will be sent out in the coming days.
Years 2-6 are encouraged to submit their work through Google Classrooms. This can be in the form of word documents or photos of work that has been completed at home. Parents with students in Kindergarten and Year 1 are also encouraged to submit their child’s school work. This can also be done by sending the school an email with some photos of the completed work. We are in this together, so please continue to share your success stories and provide feedback to the staff. The feedback provided is assisting staff with their planning.
During this time there are, and continue to be, changes to our normal everyday activities. This is going to be a very challenging time for all. Please let us know if your child is having difficulties and we can arrange for the teacher to check-in with them.
The State and Federal Governments have already provided funding towards many areas during this crisis. I have included a couple of links to assist you.
NSW Government - https://preview.nsw.gov.au/covid-19
Federal Government - https://www.australia.gov.au/
Staff will continue to check-in with the students regularly. Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 should expect two calls per week to see how they are going, and to clarify any concerns about the work. Students in Years 2-6 should expect one call per week as they are able to use Google Classrooms to contact their teacher to seek clarification about any of the set work.
As this term progresses it looks more and more likely that Term 2 will begin with the same mode of delivery. If you have decided to keep your children at home and you are having difficulty with access to technology we will loan your family a laptop to support you during this time. We are all having connectivity issues as the network across the state is under pressure from the fact that a very large majority of people are working or learning from home. To access a laptop please email the school, in the subject line please address to Ms Schmidt. You will need to come to school for about 10 minutes at an arranged time to collect the device. A parent and the child will need to come out to sign for the device and login (only children can do that as they have an account) to set it up to work remotely.
The school and the P&C are willing to assist you in any way that we can during this time. Please reach out if required. During this time, it is important that we all stay connected as much as possible given the guidelines. Take the time to call or message a family member, friend and check-in with them.
Kind regards
Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Mrs Wasson’s Class
I have set up a Google Classroom and invite all of our students to participate in the weekly mathematics problem solving activity I will be posting. Anyone can participate! It would be wonderful to receive photos of a variety of approaches and strategies being used. I will publish some of the submissions in this weekly newsletter.
Class code - ifzc2kp
This week, your task is: My partner created an ascending (increasing, getting bigger, going up) pattern.
What did it look like?
Try and think creatively – it does not need to be a number pattern and if it is, it does not need to use whole numbers. You also don’t need to start from 1. Challenge yourself.
The question from Week 8 was asking you to design a dog pool that could hold 30L of water. Some interesting responses. Hazel submitted;
It will be 50cm wide by 60cm long by 20cm tall. It will allow 10cm extra in height for splash.
A good consideration. To extend on this, you could think about the different shapes that a pool could be, you could use fractions or decimals, you could design steps into the pool. I would love to see some visuals to accompany the responses, if you are able to take a photo and submit it, I would love to see.
Around Penno
As many of us are working and learning from home, it is really important that we continue to feel connected to our community. Pennant Hills has a wonderful community spirit and this continues during difficult times.
If you and your family come across something that warms your heart or a community initiative that you think would be great to share, please email the school email with subject: Community item for Mrs Wasson. I would love to include these items in our weekly newsletter.
For now, below are some pictures of the Rainbow Trail which is to bring a smile to your face when you are walking. If you would like to participate, create a rainbow and display it on your letterbox, window or fence, or you could draw one with chalk on the footpath. This will bring a smile to others. Attached is a word document with some images of Rainbow craft you may like to try at home, or you could come up with your own creative rainbow!
There are also many home based rainbow Science experiments you may be able to do, ensure you speak with an adult. Don’t forget to take a photo and share it with us.

Lots of Socks Day
You may have seen on the SZapp notification a few photos from our Lots of Socks Day, there were many more, some of which are shown below. Thank you to everyone who got involved at home – so many happy socks! And a few socky dogs.
Lots of Socks Day is about raising awareness for Down Syndrome and Down Syndrome NSW.
FROM THE RELIEVING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Thank you
Firstly, thank you to our wonderful parents who supplied the staff morning tea last Friday. Your generosity was very much appreciated after a long week at school.
Following our beautiful morning tea the Pennant Hills Market Place supplied us lunch and a coffee. Leaf café, Alina’s Bakery and Sushi Hills put on a beautiful lunch. It was such a lovely gesture.

The staff appreciate the generosity from our parent’s and the wider community. Thank you all for the ongoing support at this unsettling time. Schools were built to be filled with students and we are missing you all so much.
Please stay safe and keep laughing.
Kind regards
Mrs Melissa Griffith

Harmony Day
A big thank you to all those students who wore a touch of orange on Thursday 19 March to celebrate Harmony Day. With all that has been happening in our world at the moment the message that “everyone belongs” is ever so important.
It was a great day and week with a whole host of activities taking place, ranging from students visiting their buddy classes and participating in craft activities to reflecting and writing about their cultural background.
Once again this celebration highlighted our cultural diversity and the importance of being inclusive.

FETE RAFFLE IS STILL GOING AHEAD -
and we need your support!
With the cancellation of Fete, we are still working hard to raise valuable funds for our School.
Thank you to those families who have already started to send in their raffle money and books. So far we have raised $1800! If every family SELLS or BUYS their 3 books, we can still raise close to $20,000. It’s the best way to raise funds for our school at this time.
Earlybird Draw is still on - entries close Wednesday for draw this Thursday. Winners will be announced in the newsletter and can collect their prizes from the school office.
We are asking for Flexischools orders only from now on - please ‘keep the change’ and pay for your tickets online. Remember to add the Flexischools receipt number to the front page of each book.
Boxes are in each office to drop the ticket books into - NO CASH PLEASE. Alternatively you can drop into the mailbox at 33 Ramsay Rd Pennant Hills - again no cash.
Our new online platform is almost ready - there will be a separate message to all families this week.
Thank you for your support.

- Band Google Classroom has been set up TB, ICB and SCB bands so that students can continue their learning online.
- In order to get started with our Band Google Classroom everyone will need a Google account. Please note that this account must not be linked to your child's department of education (DET) email account due to its limitations.
- Creating a Gmail account for a child under 13 is made easy using the Family Sharing app. Click on the below link for more details. https://support.google.com/families/answer/7103338?hl=en
On behalf of the Band committee, we would like to thank all the parents for being patient during this difficult time and adapting to the changes being made in response to the epidemic.

Over the past month, we’ve all no doubt felt the shock of seeing our supermarket shelves looking so empty. Will the empty shelves help us reduce our food waste? In NSW, the EPA reports that more than a third of the average red lid garbage bin is wasted food while the Hornsby Council says that food waste makes up almost 40% of what’s in our red bins.
So how we reduce the amount of food we waste?
The NSW government has a website called Love Food, Hate Waste which can give you heaps of information including 6 steps to reducing food waste at home -
https://www.lovefoodhatewaste.nsw.gov.au/at-home/six-steps-reducing-food-waste-at-home
The Victorian version takes this to another level and gives recipes to use your leftovers and tips to save money and reduce food waste:
https://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/campaigns/love-food-hate-waste
What about the food scraps that we produce when we use fresh food?
Composting and worm farms work to return the nutrients in scraps back to the soil. The Hornsby
Council offer half price compost bins or worm farms to those who watch a tutorial and take a quiz at the end! Perhaps this is a good holiday project with the kids although it is wise to check if the Waste Management Office at Sefton Road Thornleigh is open - http://idigcompost.com.au/
If you can’t manage your own compost or worm farm perhaps ShareWaste is for you? ShareWaste connects people who want to recycle their waste, with someone nearby who is happy to take extra waste for their own compost, worm farm or chickens. And of course if you already have a healthy compost, you can always sign up to take some more from your neighbours - https://sharewaste.com/
