Novel Coronavirus
I would like to thank and acknowledge all of our community for their support and understanding during this outbreak. You will have heard the news regarding Novel Coronavirus on the television, radio, internet or social media. While this news can be upsetting for many people it is important that we work together to support those who have been in the impacted areas. It is also very important that we don’t assume people who have a Chinese or other Asian background are linked to the spread of the Novel Coronavirus. Anti-Asian language and behaviour, or any other form of racism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our school community. I have personally spoken with many families about this virus and they are all following the Australian Government advice, which is fantastic. If anyone impacted by this outbreak needs assistance, please feel free to contact me and I am more than willing to offer support and guidance during this difficult time.
Swimming Carnival
What a fabulous day last Tuesday! Our carnival was fantastic in so many ways. The students were supportive of each other and most importantly participating. It was also amazing to see so many parents there to support their children during the day. I acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of Mrs Ford who organised the carnival. To have the carnival run so smoothly so early in the term is a credit to her abilities. Our new elected House Captains also did a marvellous job throughout the entire day. The leaders were fantastic as they created such an enthusiastic and positive environment for all the students. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the day. Several children will now go on to represent our school at the Beecroft Zone PSSA Swimming Carnival in a few weeks. Students who meet the qualification guidelines will receive information shortly about the event.
Disabled Parking
Our school has two designated disabled car spaces on the K-2 site. It has come to my attention that people are parking there for their convenience at different times of the day. These spots are specifically for people who have a disability sticker. This sticker must be displayed on the front windscreen of the car. We do have members of our community that rely on these spots so they can safely park and get in and out of their car. Please do not park in these spots at any time. I thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation with this matter.
Last week our school leaders Jessica, Joel, Kirrily and Harry attended a Leadership Camp for all school leaders in our area. During the camp they participated in a range of workshops all designed to assist them develop as leaders and contribute to our school community in many ways. They had an excellent time making new friends who are about to embark on the same journey as themselves and learning about and developing their leadership skills. Mrs Griffith was also at the camp assisting all students develop their leadership abilities.
Meet the Teacher Night
Next week is our Meet the Teacher night where it is a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher/s for 2020. This night is about being informed about your child’s class. It is not an opportunity to talk with the teacher about your child’s individual needs. For these types of discussions please arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Swimming Carnival
Wow! What a day! It was wonderful to experience the amazing spirit of Penno at the swimming carnival last week. The students were striving for their personal bests. A stand out was definitely the younger students who were all having a go at multiple events – great work everyone!
Back into it
As I walked around the K-2 site today, there was an overwhelming sense of calm. This years Kindergarten are remarkably settled, I’ve actually never seen anything like it. Well done Kindergaten on settling into your new environment so quickly! Well done to our fabulous Kindergarten teachers who have created such a welcoming, warm and positive learning environment for the students and well done parents for preparing them so well. Little go-getters!
Mathematics
As you may be aware, the staff at Pennant Hills Public School are focusing on mathematics during 2020 as part of our School Plan. We kicked off the year with a 2 hour Professional Learning session on the staff development day that involved looking at differentiation and mathematics. 94% of staff have responded that the workshop was beneficial. We are continuing our focus on differentiation in mathematics throughout 2020 with the support of School Services, workshops with mathematics consultants, and investment in human and physical resources. We have ordered maths kits for every classroom, which will be distributed this week. The photo below is of the 23 kits being put together in the hall.
If you would like to hear more about our focus on mathematics, please join us at 7pm on Tuesday 3 March in the school hall for our Maths Talk. This will be followed by the P&C meeting and Annual General Meeting.
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

Scholastic Book Club
Twice a term Scholastic Book Club catalogues, featuring an array of books and other items, are made available to the students to take home if they wish to do so. The catalogues can also be viewed on the Scholastic Australia website. In turn, our school receives reward points from the orders that are placed and these are used to purchase a range of educational resources.
As was the case last year parents place their own orders online. Consequently, the school does not accept cash or cheque payments.
If you wish to order from the Book Club catalogue you will need to go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website page, register/update your details if you haven’t already done so and then pay by credit card. After the closing date for that issue your order will be sent directly to the school and distributed.
How do I register and order?
- Go to the Scholastic Book Club LOOP website to register your details. You will need to enter your name, email address and a password. Click on “Add new child” and using the drop down menu locate our school and your child’s class. If you have children on both sites you may decide to register and place your entire order just with one child to save time.
- Enter your child’s first name and their surname initial. Please note that Scholastic does not share student details with third parties or use this information for marketing purposes. This information is for distribution for when the order arrives at the school.
- Click on “ORDER “ and enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue and follow the prompts to make payment by credit card.
- All orders are then processed after the closing date and delivered to the school to be distributed.
Please note there is no need to return a paper order form or payment receipts to the school.
Classes will receive the Issue 1 catalogues this week. The closing date for online orders is Wednesday 19 February.
2020 Library Monitors – Semester 1
Many thanks to the Year 6 students who have volunteered to be library monitors this semester. They fulfil a vital role in keeping the library open before school and at lunch time for the benefit of all students on the 3-6 site. They undertake many duties such as: borrowing and returning books, presenting library reports at assemblies, assisting students with book selection and shelving.
At the moment they are in training and on a huge learning curve! It has been really pleasing to see how enthusiastically they have accepted their new responsibilities. 2020 is definitely going to be a great library year!

GREEN TEAM TIPS
Shine Like It Does - the Benefits of Solar Power
While humans have been benefitting from the sun’s immense energy their entire existence, the discovery of how to generate electricity using the sun’s rays is the most sophisticated way yet. Solar energy offers a range of solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face as a global community. Here are just a few benefits of installing Solar Power in your home:
- Solar power is good for the environment. It is a clean source of renewable energy. It neither pollutes our earth and will never run out.
- Solar power takes your building “off the grid”. In combination with a battery it provides energy independence so you will not be affected by power outages and grid failures. Not only that but you can actually make money (up to $70/hr in SA) by selling power back to retailers.
- Solar power is efficient When energy has to travel large distances some of it is lost along the way- approximately 2%-6% in transmission and approximately 4% in distribution. This cost is passed on to consumers so in effect you are paying for more than you use.
- Solar power can use underutilised space. By shading rooftops they make the building cooler thereby reducing the need for air-conditioning. A double saving!
- Solar power creates new jobs in a growth industry. As we inevitably transition away from unrenewable and polluting forms of energy, new higher paying jobs are emerging in the clean energy sector.
- Solar power is free! The initial upfront costs of solar panels continue to plummet while their efficiency only increases making solar power an ever increasingly sensible option. Batteries too are becoming more efficient and cost effective.
The time for Solar is now! Next time you see your rooftop copping full sun and heating up your house, ask yourself how nice it would be to have that roof shaded by something that is generating electricity for you and your community.
