Opportunity Class Placement for 2021
The process for applying for an Opportunity Class placement for Year 5 - 2021 has changed slightly due to Covid-19. The applications will now open on 9 June 2020 and close on 26 June 2020. All parents wishing their child to sit the placement test need to register online. The following website contains all the necessary information for this year’s process and links to enrol.
https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/updates
General information about Opportunity Classes is available at this website.
The OC Placement test will be held on 16 September 2020. An “Intention to Apply” form has been sent home with every Year 4 student. If you do apply please ensure you complete the form and return it to the school. This will ensure everything is completed properly by all involved.
Survey of Covid-19 Times
In the coming week all parents will receive a survey from the school to find out their thoughts on how we handled the challenging times during Covid-19 when students were learning from home. We are very keen to find out parent’s thoughts about what worked well and any changes to be kept and become part of the business as usual at school. I will also be surveying students and staff about their thoughts. The feedback will assist the school in its decision making for the future of the school. I thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey.
Principal’s Pizza Lunch
Due to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, we are now able to hold our Principal’s Pizza lunch for those students who have been awarded three Principal’s Awards. The lunch will take place next Tuesday in the Library. All students that are due for their Pizza Lunch will receive their invitation today or tomorrow. If you believe your child should have received an invitation to this lunch please ask them to speak with their teacher. I am very much looking forward to celebrating and acknowledging the outstanding work of the students in achieving this milestone.
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Teacher Professional Learning
Our amazing teachers are currently engaging in quality professional learning to ensure that their knowledge and understanding is up to date with current research and in line with best practice in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Over the course of today and tomorrow, each stage is working with a Curriculum Advisor from School Services under the direction of the PHPS Senior Executive Team, to create whole term units of work that support and extend students when addressing mathematical outcomes in accordance with the NSW syllabus. As a staff, we have already engaged in whole staff afternoon and day sessions as well as online professional learning during the Covid-19 pandemic, to ensure a collegial understanding of the syllabus and aligning that with the PHPS school plan, “Develop a school culture that facilitates and supports teachers in proactively developing and refining their skills and fostering students as deliberate and active agents in their own learning.” We have created a mathematics Scope and Sequence across K-6 to ensure all outcomes are addressed in a sensible and sequential manner, approaching mathematics in the way it is intended, which is a subject that builds and intertwines skills and knowledge. Our teachers have taken on this challenge with enthusiasm and we are receiving very positive feedback. Thank you to our amazing staff for continually improving to ensure the best outcomes for our students.
Around the school
We have recently purchased new ‘jellybean’ tables for Stage 1 classes to allow the teachers to more effectively interact and support groups of students. These tables make for a great collaborative huddle space during reading groups, mathematics, writing activities and at any point where small group instruction is taking place. It is great to see these tables being effectively utilised, below you will see the students and Mrs Coventry from 2C around their jellybean table during a guided reading session.
I always enjoy spending time in our wonderful classrooms and getting to know the students better. Yesterday I overtook a writing session in 4G and learnt some interesting facts about the students like their favourite colours, pets, siblings and hobbies. Thank you for welcoming me into your room 4G!
We are very lucky here at Pennant Hills Public School to have such a dedicated team of teachers, including our specialist teachers. While popping into some of the Kindergarten rooms I noticed Mrs Krivohlavy working with a small group of learners. They were very engaged in their work, sounding out words and substituting the beginning sounds with great success! Well done Kindergarten EALD students!
Kind Regards
Mrs Kate Wasson

Green Team Update

Of course, we all have so many other things to juggle sometimes it just doesn’t seem possible. So why not start small - try swapping out the snap lock bags for a small reusable container. And if you do need to use a snap lock bag, remember you can wash them out and reuse them many times.
Some other nude ideas – Pack reusable utensils instead of plastic – you can pick up some spare forks and spoons pretty cheaply at supermarkets or second hand shops if you don’t want to send your good set off to school. Try to avoid pre-packaged single-serve snack items and instead send a portion in a reusable container.

- It’s admirable how well the students have adapted and embraced the online learning. Their enthusiasm has been wonderfully captured in an outstanding virtual performance by their band conductors. Below links can be viewed to watch the SCB and ICB students giving their best virtual performances.

SCB - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sce6NF63Bbo
- Band rehearsals will begin on site from this week. Below are the guidelines that all the band students and parent helpers are expected to follow:
- Parent helper must sign and return the External Visitor form to the band email address that has been emailed last week to all the band parents. This must be done the day before rehearsal at a minimum. If this is not done rehearsal cannot go ahead.
- During rehearsal, the parent helper may need to remain outside the room, with the distancing rules imposed on band rehearsals there can only be 16 people inside the band room.
- At the beginning of rehearsal each student is to wash their hands at the washing station inside the room
- All students are to leave their school bags and instrument cases outside. If it is raining (not just a wet ground), then school bags can go under their chair, and instrument case next to their chair)
- Any brass players MUST HAVE their own water towel onto which they can empty their water valve. If they do not have one, they cannot play.
- At the end of rehearsal one student at the end of each row is to take a cleaning wipe from the packets and wipe down the stands (where the music sits), and seats. (No need to do the pole of the stand, or legs or the chairs, just the high touch areas)
- Finally, for the Thursday morning rehearsal where SCB and JB rehearse, the SCB students who do not play in JB will need to remain outside the band room at the K-2 site with the parent helper until 8:45am. Please make sure your child understands this.
- Week 9 band schedule for each band is as below:
- Monday Afternoon 3:30pm - SCB. Trumpets, Trombones, Bass Guitar, Tenor Sax, Percussion
- Wednesday Morning 7:20am – ICB. Flutes, Clarinets, Alto and Tenor Saxs
- Thursday Morning 7:30am - SCB. Flutes, Clarinets, Alto Saxs.
- Thursday Morning 8:15am - JB. (all)
- Friday Morning 7:50 am – TB. Flutes, Clarinets, Trumpet, Percussion.

All going well, term 3 will see the canteen being open to over the counter sales again!!! At both sites!!
This means that we will be needing our lovely K-2 helpers again.
There are unfortunately many gaps in the K-2 roster. This shift is only from 1-2pm, and it is much easier and more enjoyable with two helpers. The children are going to be so excited to have their canteen back!
I would love to hear from anyone who is interested in helping out at either site.
It’s getting chilly!!!
Check out all of our delicious hot food options on Flexischools.
Recess orders are available for the 3-6 site.
This week’s roster:
While there are no over the counter sales, we do not need any help for the K-2 site.
3-6 Site:
Wednesday 24 June - Julianne.
Thursday 25 June - Lisa S.
Friday 26 June - Vicki and Narelle.
If you have any questions or would like to be involved with the canteen, please contact me.
Thank you.
