Return to School
What a magnificent day yesterday!
It saw the return to school for all our students. Most students were excited to be back, with a few showing some nerves, which is to be expected. I visited each of the classrooms throughout the day and the students were back into the swing of things. (Obviously the students had some good teachers these last few weeks!) It was evident that they were excited to be back at school to play with their friends, and do some more learning.
The teachers were also excited about the day and both sites were in celebration mode for the day. Thank you to all the staff for their efforts.

As we are now back to five days a week there is no more Learning from Home as a mode of delivery. All students are expected to attend school unless they are unwell or have a medical certificate. Our normal processes will be in place, where all absences need to be explained to the school. Please use SZapp or write a handwritten note for the class teacher. If you arrive late to school or need to collect your child early, you must present to the appropriate office for a late or early departure slip.
Parking in the Morning and Afternoon
This is an area that requires everyone to show consideration for other members of the community. Please do not park across our neighbour’s driveways, even for a few minutes. This is very rude and disrespectful, and if I see anyone doing this, I will contact the Rangers from Hornsby Council and ask them to visit our school. I do not apologise for this stance as it is extremely selfish behaviour.
Please note that Trebor Road is now ‘No Parking’ on one side near the school’s entrance. You are allowed to stop your vehicle for a few minutes, however you need to stay with your vehicle. You are not legally allowed to park there during drop off time and walk your child in to the school. If you wish to walk your child in to the school, please park elsewhere. The change of signs is to improve the traffic flow in that area. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
A friendly reminder that the staff car parks are not for parents to use between 8am – 4pm. This is to ensure the safety of everyone. Parents who use the car parks without the school’s permission, because they are running late is not acceptable. If you need to use the staff car parks during these times because of a medical condition, please contact the school for approval.
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck
Principal
A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Welcome back!
Our school was literally buzzing yesterday morning, with excitement shared between teachers and students about having everyone back! Many teachers commented on it feeling similar to the first day of the year and in a way, it is similar. I witnessed many students running through the balloon arches with such excitement to see their friends and to be back to what feels like ‘normal.’ Parents seemed to be smiling from ear to ear also! It was awesome to see the playground full and to hear so much laughter. We missed you all, welcome back!
Stage 2 have been involved in a primary industries unit and have been planning and creating a project to share with their classes. They are a very creative bunch. I saw an elevated shearing shed and the reason for the elevation was to ensure the sheep had shelter during rainy periods. Below are some pictures of a bee hive created by Claire in 4G. Well done everyone on your efforts!
Mrs Wasson’s class
This week wasn’t as busy in my Google Classroom but there were some excellent responses to the increasing cube question. Thank you to those students who participated! Helena stated, “We noticed that the pattern was going up by 3 and started by 4, so 3 times 43 is 129 and plus 4 is 133 so the answer is 133!” Great reasoning, thank you for sharing. However, I think you may have miscounted as the initial 4 is part of the 43 count, however it included 4 blocks, not 3, so you needed to add 1. This is how Chrissie explained it; “The pattern is 1+1*3, 1+2*3, 1+3*3 and so on. So if it is 43 times then it is 1+43*3 and it equals 130.” The answer is 130. Great work everyone!
This week in Mrs Wasson’s class, I’m asking YOU to come up with the mathematical questions.
What math questions could you ask in reference to this image?
If you have something you would like to contribute, please join my Google Classroom. You might feature in next week’s newsletter! Class code – ifzc2kp

National Simultaneous Storytime – Wednesday 27 May – 11 am
Showcasing the fabulous “Whitney and Britney chicken divas”!
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is back for its 20th year. Each year, a picture book is selected by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) to be read at the same time around Australia.
The book everyone will be reading at 11am tomorrow is “Whitney and Britney chicken divas“ by Lucinda Gifford. A book definitely full of “poultry glamour!”
To celebrate this fun event, students may like to bring a “touch” of glamour e.g. tiara, boa, glittery item etc. that can be worn whilst viewing the story.

Scholastic Australia will resume the delivery of school Book Club catalogues. Issue 4 will be distributed this week. The catalogue can also be viewed online using the following link www.scholastic.com.au/book-club/book-club-parents/

Green Team Update
How well do you know your weeds? Terry, a local
Bushcare volunteer has noticed a particular weed is thriving at the moment. Due to lockdown measures, the Hornsby Bushcare volunteers are not able to help control the outbreak as an organised effort. Terry has appealed to our local Hornsby Councillor, Emma Heyde to help get the message out.
If you have Cassia in your garden, it is important that it doesn’t spread! The best option is to dig the weed out, roots and all. At the very least, cut off the seed pods to prevent birds from spreading the weed to a greater area.
Wondering what’s a weed and what’s not? The Hornsby council website have some great information with colour photos to help with weed identification and how to control them.

Bushcare is a volunteer organisation that helps regenerate our wonderful bushland areas across the Hornsby shire. If you are keen to help, check out the Bushcare information on the Hornsby Council website.

Things seem to be slowly returning to normal with students back to school full time this week. For the time being, band rehearsals will continue to run via Zoom and Google Classrooms.
There are some adjustments to rehearsal times to accommodate students returning to school. We hope they can still participate in band rehearsals.
Training band - Currently split into 3 groups
Group 1 - Brass and Bass Guitars
Group 2 - Flutes and Percussion
Group 3 - Clarinets and Saxophones
We have 2 rehearsal time slots on Friday mornings.
Intermediate Band - Currently split into 2 groups
Group 1 - Brass and Percussion
Group 2 - Flutes, Clarinets, and Saxophones

They can be worked on at a convenient time should your child miss a rehearsal or attend BASC during rehearsal times.
If you have any concerns, please reach out to your conductor or the band committee.
