Week 3 – What a great Week!
What a fabulous two days we have had so far this week. It is so refreshing to see so many smiling faces at school. We are looking forward to seeing all the other students on Thursday and Friday. Thank you to our wonderful school community for their continued support during Covid-19. As more information comes to light I will continue to provide the community with updated information.
The school has implemented many strategies throughout the day to help stop the spread of Covid-19 and we will continue to do so during this situation. Please remember to send your child to school with a water bottle. We are insisting that parents do not enter classrooms or corridors to drop off their child’s school bag. These measures are in place to keep everyone safe. The NSW Department of Education (DoE) has updated their guidelines for schools in managing the return of students. These guidelines are based on advice from NSW Health and specifically relate to Primary Schools. Please use the following link to access ‘Advice for Families’ from the NSW DoE.
https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families
If you have any concerns about sending your child to school, please contact their teacher to discuss.
As students begin returning to school if you have any concerns about your child’s mental wellbeing please speak with your teacher. Our school counsellor is onsite every Monday and Tuesday. The current situation is new for everyone and if you are concerned now, or in the future, please enquire about this service to assist your child.
Parking – Trebor Road
There has been a slight change to the Parking signs on Trebor Road during school drop off hours. One side of Trebor Road is now ‘No Parking’ between 8am-9:30am. ‘No Parking’ means that you are able to park your car in that space, however, you must stay within 3m of your car. This will allow you to stop safely, support your child in exiting the car and get their bag to walk safely and independently onto the K-2 site. This new signage will accommodate approximately 5-6 cars and will improve the traffic flow as you will not need to stay there as long. All other signage on Trebor Road has remained the same, so if you prefer to walk your child in to the school grounds please do not park in those spaces.
School zone parking rules
No Parking
- Drivers may stop in this zone to drop off or pick up passengers or goods for a maximum of two minutes.
- The driver MUST remain in or within three metres of the vehicle at all times.
- The vehicle must not be left unattended.
- If times of operation are shown on the sign, the restriction only applies during the times shown.
- No Parking zones can also be used to drop off and pick up children.
Reports
Semester One reports would normally be sent out towards the end of Term 2. The mode of learning has significantly changed this semester due to Covid-19. All schools are currently awaiting advice from the NSW Department of Education regarding the guidelines and requirements for reporting on this semester’s learning. I will update the community as soon as this information is provided to our school.
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck
Principal
A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Welcome back!
Yesterday morning saw the school feel a little bit more normal for the first time in weeks. Happy students and teachers abuzz with excitement at being back on site. We have missed you all and we are so thrilled to start seeing you all again. I overheard many students expressing their delight in being at Penno; “I can’t believe I am back, it’s so exciting!”, “It’s so good to be back!”, “This feels so much better!” were just some of the sentiments. One that made me laugh, “My dad isn’t a very good principal.” Thank you to our amazing families for supporting the school in our quest for normality. We will get there!
Learning from Home
4M were growing broad beans during Term 1 as a part of their science focus. Lucas has continued growing his plant during our Learning from Home time. It looks so healthy, no doubt there will be some delicious salads at your house! Great job Lucas!
Happy Mother’s Day
Hopefully the slight lift in restrictions meant that families were able to spend Mother’s Day with at least a couple of the special women in their lives. We hope all the mums and significant female figures in your lives had a love filled day.
Great work to those who turned in what they noticed and what they wondered as well as sharing some ways to solve the cheese and crackers problem. Chrissy stated; “I noticed that there are more crackers than cheese. I wonder if the cheese can be divided evenly for the crackers. You could stack them together and cut them into quarters. Yes. You can cut them evenly in portrait and diagonally.” Thanks for sharing Chrissy!
This week we are looking at ‘Which one doesn’t belong?’ from https://wodb.ca/
What do you notice?
What makes all the items alike?
What makes them different?
Which one doesn’t belong?
Can you share your reasoning to justify your answer?

Our SPECTRA Scientists continue to astound
There’s simply no holding back scientific discovery at Pennant hills Public School!
Despite the disruption to classroom learning, Grade 5 and 6 SPECTRA students have continued to research, hypothesise, test and observe.
SPECTRA is a national science awareness program developed and administered by the Australian Science Teachers Association. We offer the program to students in grades 5 and 6.
Our SPECTRA program continues to run using the Google Classroom platform where students can post their scientific findings and discuss what they have learnt with other students.
At our last school-based SPECTRA meeting, a LONG time ago, Rhia D from 5N demonstrated how she uses her home made ‘pooter’ (nicknamed ‘the bug sucker’) to carefully and safely collect and examine insect life.
This is a little list of what other Grade 5 SPECTRA students have been up to …
Max L – Secret messages, Glow Stick science & the technology behind running shoes
Gabriella C – After Images & Optical Illusions
Liam P – Ongoing research into finger growth
Vivaan M – Great Lakes Marine Park presentation
Poppy S – Cumberland State Forest presentation
Rebecca L – Plate Tectonics & Tsunamis
Ava N – A detailed diagram of the Ear
Rhia D – How to build and use a pooter
Clementine I – Research about Continental Drift
Kate A – Research into the life of Ruby Payne-Scott
Isabelle K – Fish presentation
Jordan M – Why do sharks attack humans?
Mihira Y – Jelly experiment (pictured)
Myrah C – Eye chart slideshow & Afterimages
Poppy S – Favourite native Australian animal research

CREATIVE ARTS - MUSIC, DRAMA, DANCE
Last Monday was May 4th, Star Wars Day.
What would Star Wars or even any movie, be without the music? John Williams wrote the music for that film and many, many others. Last Monday, I ran a little competition to see who could recognise some of the themes he has written over the years.
And the winners are:
2C – Audrey M; 2M – Lucas B; 2W – Sean M; 3B - Robert H; 3D - Sabrina W; 3R - Lewis W; 4T- Nathan C; 6P – Lily W and Staff- Mr Bryant.
Congratulations!! They will be receiving a little prize!
DANCE: Last week, students were sent links to their dance lesson for the week. It was so great to see Arnold back again! Everyone loved the routines. Students in yrs 2-6 will see their lesson in the Creative Arts Google Classrooms. Kindy and Year 1 will be sent links via Seesaw.

Band rehearsals will continued to be held using Google Classrooms. Instructions to join the Google Classrooms have been sent by the band conductors.
Rehearsals will be a combination of a Zoom meeting and Google Cassroom. This means that ALL STUDENTS need to be registered on Google Classroom by now and have access to a computer or iPad using Zoom.
Bands will be split into groups for the purpose of Zoom, based on instrument sections. The instruments will be alternated each week.
Each week a Zoom meeting for ONE of the two groups will be set up and the link and access password will be uploaded to Google Classroom and communicated by the band parent coordinator.
Band students will be allocated some assignments every week. Students can take the week to practice the assignments before they upload their recordings during the following band practice.
On behalf of the Band committee, we would like to thank all the parents for being patient during this difficult time and adapting to the changes being made in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

If you are able to be of help I would love to hear from you!!
