Education Week 2020 – “Learning Together”
Next week we will be releasing daily videos highlighting the amazing learning opportunities and programs at Pennant Hills Public School. These videos will be uploaded daily to the school’s website and an SZapp notification will be sent out when a video has been released. These videos are being created by Ms Stephens and will display many things that take place at PHPS on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we are not able to allow parents on site as normal for Education Week so we feel this will be the best way to show you some of the learning opportunities taking place in each class.
100 Days of Kindergarten
Last Friday saw Kindergarten mark 100 days of learning. What an achievement! The children were so excited. The day’s activities revolved around their achievement. Given the start to 2020, it is simply amazing to see their progress this year in such a short time. I cannot wait to see what the next 100 days brings for these students. Well done boys, girls, parents and teachers!
Enrolment
We are now taking enrolments for 2021. If you have a child starting Kindergarten next year, or know of a local family that does, please call in to one of the school’s offices for an enrolment form/pack. As most of you would be aware about this time last year the NSW Department of Education updated its Enrolment Policy. All schools were given a cap number. This number is not a limit on the number of local students allowed to enrol at the school, but it does limit the school’s ability to accept non-local enrolments. For those families who already have children at our school and do not live in our local catchment area you will need to complete an out of area application. However, please note that PHPS is well over its cap number and as such, it is only permitted to accept non-local enrolments that have exceptional or extenuating circumstances. A panel led by Mrs Wasson will consider all non-local applications and make their recommendations. I then discuss those recommendations with Mr Mark Anderson – Director Educational Leadership (Hornsby) and we make a decision and notify each family.
Reports
Due to Covid-19, Semester One reports will be sent home on Monday 10 August 2020. The NSW Department of Education has granted schools extra time to prepare the reports due to this extraordinary event. As I have previously mentioned this year we are implementing a new reporting format, which we believe will provide families a greater insight into their child’s learning progress and save teachers time in preparing the reports. This new format will be evident this semester. The difference is that for this semester only the teachers will not be awarding an A-E grade, however, the reports will highlight the student’s progress with their learning for this semester. The new format will also be able to take into account individual circumstances where the student may not have covered some learning activities during ‘Learning at Home’ and therefore teachers have been unable to accurately assess their learning.
Pennant Hills High School – High Potential and Gifted Program
The test for entry into Pennant Hills High School’s High Potential & Gifted Program (HIPAG) will take place on Friday 31 July 2020. You would have already registered for this opportunity as it was originally scheduled for earlier in the year. This is a friendly reminder as the date is now confirmed.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Around the school
5F have been working hard on place value during their mathematics lessons this week. In the first photo, students chose a number up to 1000 and then had to find number facts (multiplication and division) and different ways to make their chosen number (addition and subtraction, or a combination of all!) They also played a Kahoot on place value as shown in the second photo. In a later lesson, they were using different dice denominations to explore the ways to make 100. Race to 100 (or Race to 0 – backwards from 100 – or any number for that matter!) is a tried and tested awesome game to support and promote the understanding of number concepts. In the picture the students used their books, but you can play at home with a hundreds chart – you can read the instructions and download a handout here;
https://www.youcubed.org/tasks/race-one-hundred/
One of my all time favourite online place value games is Wishball. You can choose different levels of challenge from tens to the ultimate challenge which uses a mixture of whole numbers and decimals. It can be found on ABC education. I highly recommend this!
https://education.abc.net.au/home#!/search/wishball//
Year 3 have also been working hard in mathematics, using mini whiteboards to record their understanding and investigations.
KP have been busy! Last week they celebrated 100 days of Kindergarten with the rest of Kindy, below is a photo of some of the students creating beaded bracelets – excellent for fine motor development. They also have been working hard on their gross motor skills. Using scoops to throw and catch balls is harder than it sounds. Great job KP!
Staff Profile
This week the staff profile is for Miss Courtney Hansell. Miss Hansell is the teacher for 3B. Thank you for sharing your profile Miss Hansel!

Green Team Update
Waste Not, Want Not
Ahhhh foooood - We love it and need it, but also waste a lot of it. In a world where far too many still go hungry (approx 870 million people) it has become apparent that the problem is not production but distribution as 1.3 billion tonnes of edible food are discarded every year.
So what to do!?
While producers, retail and government tackle problems at the macro level, in a household there are some simple things you can do to reduce food waste:
- Write a shopping list from a meal plan.
- Know what you already have at home (take a “shelfie” before you go shopping)
- Store food correctly to make it last longer (fridge, freezer, pantry?)
- “Best before” is a guide only - use your eyes and nose to tell if something is not edible
- Use your freezer to store items you won’t get to eat before the use by date
- Keep things that need to be used first at the front of the fridge
- Reuse leftovers for lunch or as the basis for another meal
- Use weekends to batch cook and store in the freezer
- Share your leftovers with chooks, dogs or any other pets that might be peckish
- Compost food waste rather than bin it (more on this soon)

- Band Program 2021! Thinking about your child joining a band next year? Learning a musical instrument is great for children. Playing an instrument benefits the brain, builds up confidence, and promotes group responsibilityand discipline. It also helps their mind and body work together. It brings down stress. It also makes you smarter than you used to be, the brain is like a muscle, exercising the musical part will help across the board. It can even help you read better because you are reading the music.
- Entry to the PHPS Band Program is open to all children from Year 3 to Year 6. As rehearsals are currently on the K-2 site younger students may be considered at the conductor’s discretion if they have already been having lessons and playing their instrument for a minimum of 4 months.

Second Hand Uniforms
If you require second hand uniforms, please contact me on the email address below, so that I can check what stock is on hand in the second hand clothing pool.
Boys Trousers
Size 10 and 14 boys’ trousers have sold out and there is currently no new stock available from Midford. Size 14 trousers will arrive later this week, however size 10 will remain unavailable from the supplier due to manufacturing and supply issues in China. I apologise for any inconvenience caused by these stock outages.
Sports Uniform
Stock in several sizes of the sports uniform is running extremely low. A large indent order was placed at the end of March. Unfortunately due to delays in the manufacturing process, the order will not arrive until the end of August.
Dr Shoe
Dr Shoe will not be attending the Uniform Shop in the foreseeable future however Max can be contacted direct on 0414 912 838 to arrange a home fitting.
Ordering Uniforms
