Education Week 2020 – “Learning Together”
This week is Education Week. This year’s theme is ‘Learning Together’. Please keep an eye on our school’s website, https://pennanthil-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/ for some videos this week showcasing the great things happening at PHPS. Thank you to Ms Stevens for all her work compiling the videos.
Reports
Semester One reports will be sent home Monday 10 August. The report format has changed slightly to provide families with more information about their child’s progress. An added benefit is that it has greatly reduced the time for teachers to collate a student’s report.
Due to Covid-19, for this semester only, the reports will not indicate an A-E grade for student achievement.
This is a sample of what the report format will look like and what each section means for you as a parent.
External Validation
Every few years all schools undergo a process called External Validation. This process gives schools an opportunity to show their growth, and have it validated by an external panel, in relation to their School Plan against the ‘School Excellence Framework (SEF)’. The SEF outlines the ‘themes’ that all schools should aspire to have embedded in all the practices. PHPS is about to submit their findings next week and the Senior Executive team will present to a panel of Principals and Principal School Leadership representatives. This panel will assess our findings and provide feedback.
The benefits of this process are substantial. This process will really allow us to see where the school is against the SEF and allow us to work with the entire community to create our new School Plan. At the end of the day, everything we do and will plan to do should result in greater opportunities for our students, staff and parents. I look forward to working with the school community to develop the school’s next plan.
Enrolment
We are now taking enrolments for 2021. If you have a child starting Kindergarten next year, or know of a local family that does, please call in to one of the school’s offices for an enrolment form/pack. As most of you would be aware about this time last year the NSW Department of Education updated its Enrolment Policy. All schools were given a cap number. This number is not a limit on the number of local students allowed to enrol at the school, but it does limit the school’s ability to accept non-local enrolments. For those families who already have children at our school and do not live in our local catchment area you will need to complete an out of area application. However, please note that PHPS is well over its cap number and as such, it is only permitted to accept non-local enrolments that have exceptional or extenuating circumstances. A panel led by Mrs Wasson will consider all non-local applications and make their recommendations. I then discuss those recommendations with Mr Mark Anderson – Director Educational Leadership (Hornsby) and we make a decision and notify each family.
Thank You
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

On Thursday 6 August we will be filming the Dance Groups, Choirs, String Ensemble and all Band groups to go on our school website for Education Week.
Please note, on Thursday the Year 2 dance, Stage 2 dance, Stage 3 dance and Boys dance groups must be taken to the K-2 hall before school. All dance groups will be dancing in their sports uniform. All other CAPA students will be walked to the hall by school staff at their allocated filming time.
Once the filming has been completed, the students will be walked back to class. Any students in the string group, bands or choirs will need to bring their full school uniform to change into as these groups will also be filmed throughout the day.
If you have any concerns about your child being shown on our school website, please contact me before Thursday.
The videos will be uploaded to the website on Friday 7 August.

Green Team Update - Compost... Why?
We’re so glad you asked! Many people think that compost is only for keen gardeners but in reality it is for anyone who wants a cleaner greener future! Let’s dig in and see why…
When food rots in landfill it releases a toxic gas called Methane which is 28 times more polluting than the carbon dioxide your car releases. According to the U.N, 30% of all food produced is wasted, contributing to 8% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. In fact if food waste were a country, it would come in third after the US and China in terms of impact on global warming. Food waste is a HUGE polluter.
As discussed in our last article, households have a role to play in this. 20% of food purchased takes up 40% of an average household’s bin space. When you throw away food you not only contribute to methane production but also waste the water and nutrients that help them grow . By composting you return that nutrients to the soil, rather than toxic landfill.
Getting those scraps out of the landfill bin is not hard but it is a habit you should build. If you ask yourself “what can I do to help reduce pollution and climate change” then composting is a REALLY good place to start. In our next article we will talk about various composting methods for ALL situations. In the meantime try to notice what you are putting in the bin and how much of it could be diverted away from landfill.

- Education Week is on this Thursday. All students need to bring their instruments and sheet music to school. For those students who have smaller instruments that can be easily carried between sites and can be stored in their classroom.
- A small number of students have very heavy instruments e.g. euphonium. Parents are permitted to drop the heavy instruments at the hall for storage. Melissa Griffith will be at the school hall from 8.30am on Thursday morning. The instruments can then be collected at 3:15pm.
- Please continue to work through the band worksheets and send any completed through to phpsband+worksheets@gmail.com
- Attention Graphics designers - The Band is looking for someone; parent, student, friend, or family, who can help with designing and creating digital artwork for a Pull Up Banner. If you are interested please let us know.
- Band Program 2021! Thinking about your child joining a band next year? Learning a musical instrument is great for children. Playing an instrument benefits the brain, builds up confidence, and promotes group responsibility and discipline. It also helps their mind and body work together. It brings down stress. It also makes you smarter. The brain is like a muscle, exercising the musical part will help in many aspects. It can even help you read better because you are reading the music.
- Entry to the PHPS Band Program is open to all children from Year 3 to Year 6. As rehearsals are currently on the K-2 site, younger students may be considered at the conductor’s discretion if they have already been having lessons and playing their instrument for a minimum of 4 months.

Boys Trousers
Size 14 trousers are now back in stock and available for sale; however size 10 trousers remain out of stock. Size 10 are unavailable from the supplier due to manufacturing and supply issues in China. I apologise for any inconvenience caused by this stock outage.
Sports Uniform
After advising last week that stock of the sports uniform in some sizes was running low there has been a surge in sales. Size 8, 10 and 12 polos and size 10, 12 and 14 shorts have now sold out. Unfortunately, due to delays in the manufacturing process, new stock will now not arrive until the end of August. Again, I apologise for any inconvenience caused by these stock shortages.
Dr Shoe
Dr Shoe will not be attending the Uniform Shop in the foreseeable future however Max can be contacted direct on 0414 912 838 to arrange a home fitting.
