R U OK Day
This Thursday is R U OK Day. As we are well aware 2020 has been like no other. R U OK Day is about checking in on someone you know and making sure they are ok. Quite often people’s behaviour changes and you get a sense that something may be wrong. This also extends to children. This year has seen many changes. Whilst children are generally very resilient and accepting of change, 2020 has provided many curveballs and disappointment for everyone. If you would like to learn more about R U OK? please use the following link, https://www.ruok.org.au/ . If you are concerned about your child please feel free to speak with the child’s class teacher and we can arrange for the school counsellor to talk with them.
Kindergarten 2021
In a normal year we would have already communicated our plan to support our new (2021) Kindergarten students becoming familiar with the school through our Kindilinks program, which takes place in term 4. As you would be aware these types of activities are on hold at the moment. Hopefully we will be able to resort to our ‘normal’ for this program by early November. As a school we are currently compiling some resources and information to be placed on the school’s website for our Kindergarten students and families for 2021. As soon as this is up and running I will be sure to let everyone know. At this stage we are requesting that you hold off ordering uniforms until term 4 for Kindergarten 2021. This is because we are not allowed to have non-essential adults on site. As soon as we receive further guidance on this I will update the community.
Professional Learning
This afternoon after school, staff will be participating in professional learning relating to the school’s goal of improving the Mathematics results of the students. The session has been prepared by Mrs Wasson and has been designed to support staff as we continue to develop and improve teacher practice. As the staff will be working for several hours this afternoon the time accrued goes towards time in-lieu for one of the staff development days at the end of term 4. There is no impact to students or families. Staff are continuing to upskill their knowledge in this area.
Thank You
Kind Regards
Mr Matt Pinchbeck

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Our wonderful P&C have initiated a Readathon that started on Monday and continues until the end of the school holidays. Please support the work of our P&C and encourage your children to gain sponsorship from friends, family and neighbours.
For some quality literature, we recommend referring to the Premiere’s Reading Challenge booklists which can be found here - https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/booklist/home.html
Our amazing librarian, Ms Davis will be eager to support your reading goals and assist you in your book selections.
Thank you to the P&C for organising this event. Get reading Penno!
Around the School
5P have been working hard to “impress Mr Pinchbeck” (their words!) and create a mini golf course. A wonderful STEM activity that involves planning with measurement and angles, design and make. These students were using the playground to construct their masterpieces and were so engaged!
Stage 3 Dance Group
Stage 3 dance group were in the midst of a warm up when I popped into the hall on Friday. The strength and flexibility of these students was truly remarkable, even their warm up was cleverly choreographed. Thank you Arnold, our dance teacher and well done dancers!
Maths
Can you tell from the picture below what 2M are learning about? Fractions! One of my favourite topics as it links to so many areas of mathematics and our world. In this scenario, students were experimenting with different fractions of a caterpillar and using language such as; numerator, denominator and whole fraction. Well done!
I also spied 1S creating clocks outside from a hula hoop and sticky notes. A great way to encourage students to think about the placement of the numbers around the clock. Often students start with the 12 at the top, then write 1-11 all along the right hand side of the clock so this is a great way for them to reflect and reassess where they believe the numbers should be placed. Another link to fractions also! Half past, quarter to etc.
Staff profile
Our staff profile for this week is for Mrs Van Der Wal. Mrs Van Der Wal is a motivated teacher who currently teaches Year 2. Green Team UPDATE - Return and Earn success
The Thornleigh Community Recycling Centre has said goodbye to its remaining red brick and extended its wonderful mural to the entire length of the wall. Along with two white-faced herons, there is a beautiful eastern spinebill honeyeater set amongst a backdrop of a dark blue sky and an early evening sunset. The photos do not do justice to the scope of this artwork – it needs to be seen in person.
While it’s a truly stunning piece of work, there is more magic happening inside the building.
You can take almost anything to the Recycling Centre for safe disposal or recycling including old paint, motor oil, fluorescent light globes and tubes, batteries, electronic waste and more. If you’re unsure about something, they have clear guides on what you can drop off on their website - https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/property/waste/recycling/community-recycling-centre
Did you know you can also take your soft plastics to the centre? If it is clean and can be scrunched into a ball you can recycle it. As a general rule, it’s ‘Yes please’ if it’s clean and dry, but ‘no thanks’ to anything that has silver packaging (chips or some cracker packets), or has stored wet food like yogurt or pet food.
Check out the full list of what soft plastics you can and can’t recycle - https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/121864/Soft-Plastic-Recycling-flyer_CRC-for-website.pdf

Benefits of Music - part 4
One of the largest studies into the effect of learning an instrument has revealed something remarkable: while refining fine motor skills, learning an instrument is incredibly beneficial to a child’s emotional and behavioral development.
